Systematic-Theological Exposition

Substitutionary Exchange and New Creation in Christ: A Forensic, Cultic, and Eschatological Reading of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21

Abstract. This article reads 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 as a compressed statement of Paul's soteriology, ecclesiology, and apostolic theology. It argues that the antithetical structure of 5:21 unites three elements: the Old Testament sin offering (chattat), forensic penal substitution, and the imputation of Christ's righteousness to believers. The article then examines kainē ktisis in 5:17 against the cosmic horizon of Isaiah 43 and 65, and it contends that the "double grace" (duplex gratia) of justification and sanctification is received in union with Christ (unio cum Christo). Finally, it treats katallagē and presbeuomen as the objective work of the triune God and the ongoing ministry of the church through the means of grace. The article engages N. T. Wright, Richard B. Hays, Ralph P. Martin, Rudolf Bultmann, and the moral-influence reading of reconciliation, and it defends a forensic reading against these alternatives.

I. Introduction: The Theological Center of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21

1. Background and Aim

Second Corinthians 5:11–21 is among the densest passages in the Pauline corpus. In it, the apostle sets out the logic of Christ's saving death, the arrival of a new creation, the reconciliation accomplished by God, and the commission given to the church. Rhetorically, the passage is the climax of Paul's defense of his new-covenant ministry (diakonia) in 2:14–7:4 [1, 3, 4]. He answers rivals who measure worth by appearance (en prosōpō), by letters of recommendation, and by eloquence. Theologically, the passage gathers several major themes: the substitutionary death of Christ (mors vicaria), the transition between the ages signaled by kainē ktisis, the sovereign reconciliation (katallagē) of the triune God, and the claim that God made the sinless Christ to be sin so that believers might become the righteousness of God in him. This last claim forms the core of the Reformed doctrine of forensic justification [2, 5, 6].

Modern scholarship has produced sharp disagreement over the passage's key terms and syntax. The central dispute concerns 5:21b, "that we might become the righteousness of God." Is this a forensic declaration grounded in the double imputation (duplex imputatio) that Reformed tradition has affirmed [5, 7]? Or, as N. T. Wright argues within the New Perspective, does it describe the apostle's embodiment of God's covenant faithfulness in his suffering and ministry [3, 8, 9]? A second dispute concerns kainē ktisis in 5:17. Should the phrase be restricted to individual spiritual regeneration, or does it announce the eschatological new creation drawn from the new-exodus prophecies of Isaiah 43 and 65 [10, 11]?

This study engages the strongest recent rhetorical and sociohistorical work on the passage, and it seeks to correct its theological limits. The argument integrates the passage's account of salvation history around three axes: the combination of forensic penal substitution (poena vicaria) with the Old Testament cultic sin offering (chattat); justification and sanctification as the "double grace" (duplex gratia) received in union with Christ (unio cum Christo); and the sovereign grace of the triune God (gratia incongrua) together with the church's continuing ministry of forgiveness (perpetua legatio).

2. The State of the Debate

The debate on the passage falls into three fronts.

The first concerns soteriology: forensic imputation versus apostolic covenant embodiment. On 5:21b, "the righteousness of God," John Calvin, Colin G. Kruse, and David E. Garland hold that Christ's blameless righteousness is imputed (imputatio) to believers, so that God pronounces a favorable verdict upon them [5, 7, 12, 13]. N. T. Wright rejects this "double imputation" as a sixteenth-century projection. He reads 5:21 as the concrete embodiment of divine covenant faithfulness in the apostolic office [3, 8, 9]. Christoph Heilig and Douglas J. Moo reply that Wright's restriction of the apostolic office diminishes the universality of the first-person plural. They argue that genōmetha describes a new determination of existence and the result of a substitutionary interchange [14, 15].

The second front concerns lexical and cultic questions: penal condemnation versus the sin offering (chattat). On 5:21a, "he made him to be sin" (hamartian epoiēsen), Ralph P. Martin and S. Lyonnet appeal to the Septuagint of Leviticus 4:24 and 5:12 and to the Servant of Isaiah 53. They read Christ as the chattat or asham offering [16, 17]. David E. Garland and Philip E. Hughes object that this reading makes hamartia change meaning within one sentence. They argue for a reading in which the innocent Christ bears the guilt and divine wrath of sinners as a penal condemnation [12, 18, 19].

The third front concerns eschatology: individual spiritual regeneration versus cosmic new creation. Richard B. Hays argues from the elliptical Greek construction of hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis and from the intertextuality of Isaiah 65:17–25 that the sentence should not be rendered "he is a new creature." It should be read as the proclamation "there is a new creation!" with cosmic and communal scope [10, 11].

3. Thesis

Drawing these debates together, this study argues three propositions.

  • Proposition 1: Integration of forensic and cultic substitution. The "sin" of 5:21a and the "righteousness of God" of 5:21b form a strict antithetical parallelism. The event combines the cleansing of the cultic sin offering with the forensic condemnation of Christ (adjudication against Christ). The sinless mediator bears the guilt and penalty of believers by imputation, and his righteousness is imputed to them. This is the dogmatic basis of penal substitution (poena vicaria) and the "wondrous exchange" (admirabile commercium).
  • Proposition 2: New creation and double grace in union with Christ. The kainē ktisis of 5:17 announces the arrival of a cosmic new creation rooted in the eschatological new-exodus tradition of Isaiah 65. Through mystical union with Christ (unio mystica cum Christo), the forensic declaration of acquittal (justification) and the inward regeneration and covenantal life of the Spirit (sanctification) are given together. They are not separated. This is the reality of "double grace" (duplex gratia).
  • Proposition 3: Trinitarian reconciliation and the church's ongoing ministry of forgiveness. The reconciliation (katallagē) of 5:18–20 is the objective work of the triune God outside us (extra nos). It also counters the ideology of the Pax Romana. The apostolic embassy (presbeuomen) applies this completed forgiveness in the earthly church, through Word and sacrament, as a continuing ministry (perpetua legatio).

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

This study works from the Greek text (NA28/SBLGNT) and conducts syntactic and lexical exegesis. It concentrates on five points: the representational and substitutionary force of hyper in 5:14–15; the epistemological qualifier kata sarka in 5:16; the elliptical syntax of 5:17; the accounting sense of katallassō and logizomai in 5:18–19; and the purpose clause governed by poiēō and the subjunctive genōmetha in 5:21.

II. First Major Section: The Wondrous Exchange and the Forensic and Cultic Grounding of Penal Substitution (2 Cor. 5:14–15, 21a)

1. The Syntax of Hyper: Representation and Substitution

In 5:14–21 Paul uses the preposition hyper ("on behalf of," "in place of") six times, and in doing so he defines the soteriological character of Christ's death with precision [12, 20]. The statement in 5:14, "one died for all, therefore all died" (heis hyper pantōn apethanen, ara hoi pantes apethanon), identifies the effect of Christ's death for humanity [1, 7, 20].

Paul Barnett distinguishes two senses of hyper, representation and substitution [20]. In 5:14–15, "one died for all," the representative sense operates as in the Jewish analogy of David, who stood as the representative champion against Goliath. Christ died as the covenantal Head and representative of the elect people [20]. But representation is not mere example. The death of Christ is also substitutionary, and in it the death of Christ is reckoned by God as the death of believers. This is penal, vicarious atonement [12, 20].

Colin G. Kruse criticizes readings that soften hyper pantōn into "for the benefit of." He argues that the phrase means "instead of all," a penal and substitutionary death [7, 21]. Christ stood in the place of sinners and received the divine condemnation and death that the law required of them. For this reason, those united to him are reckoned by God as having died to sin in a forensic sense [7, 21].

 │
└─► Substitution: he bears the curse and penalty of the law (poena vicaria)

Ontological union of believers: "all died" -> the end of self-centered life (5:15)

2. Exegesis of 2 Cor. 5:21a: "He Made Him to Be Sin Who Knew No Sin" (hamartian epoiēsen)

Second Corinthians 5:21a declares one of the deepest mysteries of Christology and soteriology: God "made him to be sin who knew no sin" on our behalf (ton mē gnonta hamartian hyper hēmōn hamartian epoiēsen).

First, "the one who knew no sin" (ton mē gnonta hamartian) asserts the complete moral and personal sinlessness (impeccabilitas) of Christ [5, 7, 18]. The verb ginōskō with the negative participle mē means that Christ had no experiential or existential acquaintance with sin in his person or conduct [5, 18]. This satisfies the cultic requirement that the sacrifice be without blemish (sine macula) in the Levitical system [5, 12, 18].

Second, we must specify the dogmatic and cultic meaning of "he made him to be sin" (hamartian epoiēsen). Ralph P. Martin and Douglas J. Moo appeal to the Septuagint of Leviticus 4:21, 24, and 5:12, where the Hebrew chattat is rendered by hamartia. They stress that Christ became the eschatological sin offering on the cross [15, 16].

Calvin, Garland, and Hughes respond that when one word (hamartia) occurs twice in a single sentence with two different meanings, the text is being broken up in a way that does violence to its grammar. They argue that Christ is to be understood as the one who bore the concrete persons and guilt (reatus) of sinners and was condemned as a lawbreaker. This is forensic penal substitution [5, 12, 18, 19].

> "Peccatum opponitur iustitiae... (John Calvin, Commentarius in 2 Corinthios 5:21) [5, 19] > (Sin is set against righteousness... Therefore we are the righteousness of God in him, just as he is sin in us, namely by imputation.) [5, 19]

These two readings do not exclude each other. In the temple cult, the sin offering (chattat) absorbed the guilt and defilement of the people and was burned on the altar. In the same way, the innocent incarnate Son became on the cross the reality to which the Old Testament sacrifices pointed. He bore fully the guilt and curse of believers and the holy wrath of God (ira Dei) in body and soul, and he was condemned [5, 12, 15, 18].

3. Exegesis of 2 Cor. 5:21b: "That We Might Become the Righteousness of God in Him" and Double Imputation (duplex imputatio)

The phrase "that we might become the righteousness of God in him" (ina hēmeis genōmetha dikaiosynē theou en autō) states the soteriological goal (telos) toward which the substitutionary act of 5:21a moves [1, 7, 12].

Kruse demonstrates that 5:21a and 5:21b form a strict antithetical parallelism [7, 13].

[The antithetical parallelism of 2 Cor. 5:21 (Colin G. Kruse; Murray J. Harris)]

 (A) ton mē gnonta hamartian [him who knew no sin]
 (B) hyper hēmōn hamartian epoiēsen [he made him to be sin for us]
======================= (substitutionary judgment: adjudicated against Christ)
(B') ina hēmeis genōmetha [that we might become]
(A') dikaiosynē theou en autō [the righteousness of God in him]
======================= (forensic judgment: adjudicated in our favour)

According to Kruse, if the statement "we become the righteousness of God in him" means that God judged in favor of believers and placed them in a right relation to himself, then the symmetrical counterpart in 21a must mean that God judged against Christ and condemned him. Only that reading keeps the grammatical and rhetorical balance of the verse [7, 13, 21].

It follows that becoming "the righteousness of God" (genōmetha dikaiosynē theou) does not mean that a moral, substantial righteousness is infused into the believer as a habit of sanctification [5, 12, 19]. It means that, through union with Christ (unio cum Christo), the righteousness that comes from Christ's passive obedience (the forgiveness of sins) and his active obedience (the full fulfillment of the law) is imputed to believers freely. Consequently they are accounted righteous before the holy judgment seat of God. This is the forensic declaration of the Reformed tradition. It is the scriptural reality of the "wondrous exchange" (admirabile commercium) and of "double imputation" (duplex imputatio) [5, 16, 18, 19].

III. Second Major Section: Cosmic New Creation (kainē ktisis) and the Transition Between Ages (2 Cor. 5:16–17)

1. Ellipsis in the Greek Text and Grammatical Reconstruction

Second Corinthians 5:17 contains one of the best-known eschatological statements in the New Testament: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; behold, the new has come" (hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis: ta archaia parēlthen, idou gegonen kaina).

Richard B. Hays and N. T. Wright argue that the familiar translations ("he is a new creation," as in RSV, KJV, and the Korean Revised Version) misread an ellipsis in Paul's Greek [8, 10, 11]. The Greek hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis has no explicit subject and no copula (estin) for "he is." It is a highly compressed construction [10, 11].

Hays notes that when Paul uses ktisis ("creature," "creation") he consistently frames it in cosmic and salvation-historical terms (Rom. 8:19–23; Gal. 6:15). He also shows that the closest subtext of 5:17 is Isaiah 65:17–25, the "new heavens and new earth," and Isaiah 43:18–19, the "new thing" [10, 11]. On this basis, the ellipsis should be restored not as a statement about an individual's subjective conversion but as a cosmic proclamation: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, behold, there is a new creation!" [8, 10, 11].

[Interpretive options for kainē ktisis in 2 Cor. 5:17]

 │
├─► fulfillment of Isaiah 65:17 (new heavens and new earth)
└─► end of the old Adamic order (ta archaia)

2. Epochal Transition and the Abandonment of Knowing kata sarka

The cosmic announcement of 5:17 is directly connected to the epistemological turn of 5:16: "From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh; even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer."

The adverbial phrase kata sarka does more than describe a psychological stance of seeing with fleshly eyes. It names the values and criteria of the old Adamic age (old aeon / ta archaia) [1, 16, 22]. Through Christ's death for all and his resurrection, the order of the old age, with its legal and worldly standards, has already reached its forensic and ontological end (ta archaia parēlthen) [1, 16, 22].

Those "in Christ" (en Christō) therefore no longer evaluate others by the measures of the old age: external origin, circumcision, family standing, or rhetorical skill [1, 12, 16]. Even with respect to the Messiah, they no longer look for the earthly political king that first-century Judaism expected. They see instead the crucified and risen Lord (Kyrios) who is re-creating the cosmos [1, 12, 22].

3. Double Grace (duplex gratia) in Union with Christ (unio cum Christo)

The cosmic announcement of new creation does not exclude the inward regeneration of individual believers. Calvin presents "mystical union with Christ" (unio mystica cum Christo) as the link that binds justification and sanctification together, and he sets out the framework of "double grace" (duplex gratia) that results [19, 23].

[Double grace (duplex gratia) in union with Christ (unio cum Christo)]

[First grace: Justification] [Second grace: Sanctification]
 - Forensic imputation - Eschatological new life (nova creatio)
 - Verdict of acquittal before God - Inward renewal (renovatio)
 - Change in objective status - Covenantal life in the world (embodiment)

When believers are united to Christ through faith and baptism (5:17 en Christō; 5:21 en autō), they possess two graces at once. These graces cannot be separated, though they are distinct in kind [19, 23].

1. First grace, justification (justificatio). The righteousness of Christ's passive and active obedience is imputed freely, and believers receive forensic acquittal and the status of the righteous before God's judgment seat (5:21) [5, 19].

2. Second grace, sanctification (sanctificatio). Through the indwelling work of the Spirit, the affections of the heart are renewed from within (renovatio cordis; 5:17). Believers also undergo an existential determination of being (determining of existence) and embody God's covenantal faithfulness in the world [14, 19, 23].

It follows that the "embodiment of covenant faithfulness" which Wright emphasizes does not replace forensic imputation. It is incorporated into a unified account as the necessary fruit of sanctification (fructus justificationis) in the believer who has received justification and lives in union with Christ [8, 14, 19].

IV. Third Major Section: Trinitarian Reconciliation (katallagē), the Sovereignty of God, and the Embassy (presbeuomen) in the Application of Redemption (2 Cor. 5:18–20)

1. The Divine Initiative in Katallagē and the Completion of Redemption Extra Nos

Second Corinthians 5:18–19 states clearly the origin and agent of reconciliation: "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself... that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them" (ta panta ek tou theou tou katallaxantos hēmas heautō dia Christou... hōs hoti theos ēn en Christō kosmon katallassōn heautō, mē logizomenos autois ta paraptōmata autōn).

First, the absolute agent of reconciliation (katallagē) is God the Father [1, 19, 24]. Human beings had neither the capacity nor the will to reconcile themselves to God. They stood as children of wrath and as enemies. God himself planned and accomplished reconciliation in sovereign love [1, 24, 25].

Second, the difference between justification and reconciliation as metaphors. C. E. B. Cranfield and David E. Garland draw out the nuances of the two terms as they appear in Romans and 2 Corinthians [12, 24]. Justification (dikaiōsis) is a forensic act in which a judge pronounces a verdict of acquittal, and it does not necessarily imply personal friendship between judge and accused. Reconciliation (katallagē) is a relational and personal completion. After the judge has forgiven the penalty, the accused is received into personal fellowship and friendship [12, 24].

Third, the forensic force of the negated verb logizomai ("reckon," "impute"). The statement "not counting their trespasses against them" (mē logizomenos autois ta paraptōmata autōn) means that God did not enter the sins of the world into the ledgers of sinners [5, 19, 24]. The shame and condemnation of those sins were transferred to the mediator, Christ, and were fully condemned on the cross [5, 7, 19].

2. The Apostolic Office, the Subversion of Imperial Rhetoric (Pax Romana), and the Embassy of Christ (presbeuomen)

God did not stop at accomplishing objective reconciliation in Christ. He also entrusted to the apostle and his co-workers "the ministry of reconciliation" (diakonia tēs katallagēs) and "the message of reconciliation" (logos tēs katallagēs) (5:18b, 19b) [7, 19, 21].

In 5:20, "we are therefore ambassadors for Christ" (hyper Christou oun presbeuomen), the verb presbeuō was a formal political title in the Greco-Roman world and in Jewish literature (Philo, Josephus). It designated a senior envoy or ambassador (legatus) commissioned with the full authority of a king or emperor [7, 21, 26].

[The two-stage movement of trinitarian reconciliation and the embassy]

[Stage 1: Objective accomplishment of redemption (extra nos)]
God the Father ──(en Christō / cross)──► reconciles the world to himself
 │
 ▼
[Stage 2: Sovereign application of redemption (media gratiae)]
Ambassadors of Christ (presbeuomen) ──(Word & Sacraments)──► proclaim "Be reconciled to God!" and apply forgiveness

The Pax Romana that Augustus promoted in the colony of Corinth was a peace imposed by force on conquered peoples. The peace of Christ (Pax Christi) that Paul proclaims is an alternative peace, won through the self-humbling, forgiveness, and reconciling love of the cross [8, 21, 26]. Paul was not an arrogant imperial diplomat. He was a divine envoy who represented the full authority of the crucified King in weakness (astheneia) and in a cruciform existence [3, 8, 26].

3. The Continuing Ministry of Forgiveness (perpetua legatio) and the Means of Grace (media gratiae)

Calvin argues that the ministry of reconciliation in 5:20 does not operate once only, at the initial conversion of unbelievers. It operates daily through the life of the church for as long as the earthly church endures. It is the continuing ministry of forgiveness (perpetua legatio; "perpetual remission of sins") [19, 27, 28].

> "This Paul teaches, when he says that the embassy of reconciliation has been committed to the ministers of the Church, that they may ever and anon in the name of Christ exhort the people to be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20)." (John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion IV.1.22) [27, 28]

For Calvin, believers who have been justified still live in mortal flesh and sin daily [27, 28]. God has entrusted to the ministers of the church the preaching of the Word, the sacraments, and the power of the keys (claves regni caelorum). Through these, the frail faithful receive daily the forgiveness that flows from Christ's shed blood and find peace of conscience [19, 27, 28]. The embassy of the apostle is therefore the ecclesial channel through which the saving benefits of Christ's work reach believers day by day through the means of grace (media gratiae) [19, 27].

V. Objections and Replies

1. Objection One: Wright's Rejection of Forensic Imputation and the Model of Apostolic Embodiment

The objection

N. T. Wright argues that reading 5:21b as the imputation of Christ's moral righteousness to individual believers is a projection of sixteenth-century Reformed exegesis [3, 8, 9]. He offers three arguments [3, 8, 9, 29].

1. The whole context of 2:14–6:13 is not a treatise on soteriology but Paul's defense of his apostolic authority [3, 29].

2. Paul uses "to become" (genōmetha) rather than the language of reckoning (logizomai) [8, 9].

3. Therefore 5:21b describes the apostle's embodiment of God's covenant faithfulness in his suffering and ministry, a practical realization of apostolic office [3, 8, 9, 29].

Reply and dogmatic critique

Wright's reading recovers something real about the rhetorical setting of the passage. Its dogmatic and lexical limits are nonetheless serious.

First, the restriction of the statement to the apostles narrows its universal soteriological scope. As Christoph Heilig and Colin G. Kruse point out, restricting the first-person plural in "on our behalf" (hyper hēmōn) and "that we might become" (ina hēmeis genōmetha) to Paul and his team conflicts with the universal framing of 5:14–15, "one died for all" (hyper pantōn) [7, 14, 21]. If the saving effect of Christ's substitutionary death reaches all believers, then its result, "becoming the righteousness of God," must also be a soteriological declaration that applies to every believer in Christ [7, 14].

Second, Wright misreads the ontological and forensic character of genōmetha. Heilig argues that the verb refers not merely to an apostolic example but to "the determination of a new existence" that the redeemed receive in Christ [14]. In 21a, the sinless Christ takes on the forensic status of "sin" (epoiēsen). In 21b, the sinner who is united to Christ receives the forensic and ontological status of "the righteousness of God" (genōmetha). This is the result of an exact forensic substitution [7, 14, 21].

Third, justification and sanctification are integrated on the model of double grace. On this reading, genōmetha refers first to the forensic imputation of righteousness that comes through union with Christ. It is the foundation. Believers then move toward sanctification, the embodiment of God's covenant faithfulness, as the fruit of that union [14, 19]. Wright's model of embodiment is therefore not a substitute for imputation. It is absorbed into the account as the fruit of sanctification [14, 19].

2. Objection Two: Single Translation of hamartia as the "Sin Offering" (chattat) (Martin, Lyonnet)

The objection

Ralph P. Martin and S. Lyonnet note that hamartia in 2 Corinthians 5:21a translates the Hebrew chattat (sin offering) in the Septuagint of Leviticus 4:24 and 5:12. They conclude that Paul's statement that God "made him to be sin" should be read as a single term, "sin offering," so that Christ is presented as the offering on the altar [15, 16, 22].

Reply and dogmatic critique

This reading correctly recalls the cultic background, but it breaks the grammatical structure of the verse.

First, the same word is given two different senses within a single sentence. As David E. Garland stresses, Paul uses hamartia in the phrase "him who knew no sin" in a moral and substantial sense. It would be rhetorically awkward to read it as "sin offering" in the next clause, "he made him to be sin" [12].

Second, the verb is not the verb one would expect for a sacrifice. If Paul had meant to describe Christ as an offering placed on the altar, he would likely have used the technical verbs for offering sacrifice, such as prosenenken ("offered") or parastēsai ("presented"), rather than epoiēsen ("made") [12].

Third, the antithetical parallel of 21 breaks down. As Garland and Kruse show, hamartia ("sin") forms a direct substitutionary counterpart to dikaiosynē ("righteousness") in 21b [7, 12, 21]. The statement that Christ "became sin" includes the sense of offering, but the grammar supports a fuller reading. Christ bore the guilt and penalty of believers and the moral condemnation that comes from God. That is penal substitution [7, 12, 21].

3. Objection Three: Bultmann's Dismissal of the Historical Jesus and Its Grammatical Refutation

The objection

Rudolf Bultmann reads 5:16, "even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh," as evidence that Paul had no interest in the earthly life of Jesus of Nazareth. On this reading, Paul looked only to the exalted and heavenly Christ of the kerygma as the object of faith.

Reply and dogmatic critique

First, the syntax of the verse. Garland shows that throughout the Pauline letters, kata sarka modifies a noun or proper name in postposition (Rom. 1:3; 9:5) [12]. In 5:16 the object Christon precedes the prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase therefore functions adverbially, modifying the verb egnōkamen ("we knew") [12, 15].

Second, the scope of the standard being rejected. What Paul rejects is not the historical Jesus as such. He rejects the fleshly evaluative standard that led him, before the Damascus road, to regard the crucified Jesus as a cursed false prophet [12, 15]. In the new creation, believers come to recognize with spiritual sight that the crucified Jesus of history is the risen Lord (Kyrios) of all things [12, 15].

4. Objection Four: The Subjectivist and Moralist Reading of "Reconciliation" and the Defense of Trinitarian Sovereign Grace

The objection

Nineteenth-century liberal theologians (for example, A. Ritschl) and some modern moralist exegetes read reconciliation (katallagē) in 5:18–20 as a subjective and moral process (moral influence). In this process, human beings remove the misunderstandings and hostility they hold toward God, and there is no objective removal of divine wrath or forensic condemnation [12, 24].

Reply and dogmatic critique

First, the reality of God's holy wrath (ira Dei). Garland argues that human sin violated God's holy justice and provoked his wrath. Therefore true reconciliation is impossible unless the forensic condemnation and the guilt of sin have first been dealt with [12, 24].

Second, the objective origin of reconciliation (extra nos) and the non-reckoning of trespasses (logizomai). Verse 19 says that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself. It then presents the cancellation of the accounting of sins ("not counting their trespasses against them," mē logizomenos) as the essence of reconciliation [5, 12, 19]. Reconciliation is therefore inseparable from forensic justification. Both are fruits of the objective saving plan of the triune God [5, 12, 19].

VI. Conclusion: Summary and Theological and Pastoral Implications

1. Summary of Findings

This study has examined 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 exegetically and dogmatically. It reaches the following conclusions.

First, in the strict antithetical parallelism of 5:21, "he made him to be sin" and "that we might become the righteousness of God" combine the cleansing of the Old Testament sin offering (chattat), the forensic double imputation (duplex imputatio), and penal substitution (poena vicaria) [5, 7, 12, 15]. The sinless mediator is condemned in the place of believers, so that believers are declared righteous before God in him. This is the wondrous exchange (admirabile commercium) [5, 7, 12, 18, 19].

Second, the kainē ktisis of 5:17 is an elliptical statement that announces the arrival of a cosmic new creation within the salvation-historical tradition of Isaiah 65 [8, 10, 11, 16]. This cosmic reality is given to believers through union with Christ (unio cum Christo) as "double grace" (duplex gratia). It holds together forensic justification and the existential embodiment of covenant faithfulness in sanctification [14, 19, 23].

Third, the reconciliation (katallagē) of 5:18–20 is an event accomplished objectively by the triune God. It also counters the ideology of the Pax Romana [8, 21, 26]. The embassy of Christ (presbeuomen) is the execution of a continuing ministry of forgiveness (perpetua legatio) in the earthly church, through the proclamation of the Word and the means of grace, which applies the forgiveness of God to believers day by day [19, 27, 28].

2. Theological and Pastoral Implications

The integrated account of redemption in 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 has several implications for the contemporary church and its ministry.

1. The forensic and ontological basis of the gospel. Pastors should proclaim the forensic gospel, in which believers receive the full righteousness of Christ and full reconciliation with God, not their own moral achievements. This proclamation gives assurance of salvation (certitudo salutis) [5, 19, 27].

2. The ecclesial identity of the new creation. The church should abandon fleshly epistemology, which judges people by worldly standards and external credentials (kata sarka). Instead it should make visible in its common life the kingdom order of the new creation, which has already begun in the risen Messiah [8, 11, 16].

3. The pastoral self-understanding of an ambassador of Christ. Ministers are not persons who boast in their abilities or rhetoric. They are ambassadors of Christ (presbeuomen), commissioned with the authority of the King. They faithfully convey to believers, day by day, God's reconciliation and his declaration of forgiveness. Their office carries holy dignity together with humble weakness [3, 7, 21, 27, 28].

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis

The Apocalyptic Horizon of New Creation, Substitutionary Reconciliation, and Twofold Grace in Union with Christ: An Integrated Historical-Grammatical and Dogmatic Exegesis of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21

By Wright

I. Introduction: The Christological and Soteriological Problem of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21

1. Background and Purpose

Second Corinthians 5:11–21 gathers several of the densest concerns in the New Testament into one passage: Christological substitution, an eschatological reversal in how people are known, God's sovereign reconciliation of the world, and the linked themes of justification and apostolic identity [1, 2]. Paul carries the argument of the new covenant ministry (diakonia), which begins at 2:14, to its height here. His opponents in Corinth measured him by the standards of first-century Greco-Roman society: personal appearance (en prosōpō), rhetorical polish, and letters of recommendation. Paul does not defend himself on those terms. He points to the cosmic upheaval set off by the cross and to the eschatological "new creation" (kainē ktisis), and in doing so he redefines apostleship from the ground up [1, 3].

Interpretive history has often cut the passage loose from its Corinthian setting. Verse 17 becomes an account of inner personal regeneration, verses 18–20 a template for evangelistic preaching, and verse 21 a proof-text for a forensic doctrine of double imputation [3, 4]. The passage, however, is not a set of isolated doctrinal propositions. The death and resurrection of the Messiah set aside the epistemological standards of "this age" and open the new covenant reality in which God reconciles the world to himself [1, 5].

This study has three aims. First, it will examine the Greek syntax of the passage, the apocalyptic background of the new exodus in Second Temple Judaism, and the imperial propaganda of the Pax Romana alongside the ancient practice of diplomatic embassy (presbeutēs). Second, it will take up the systematic-theological objection that Calvin raised in internal pre-publication review. Third, it will try to hold together three things that are often set against one another: the penal and cultic dimensions of atonement, the "twofold grace" (duplex gratia) received in union with Christ, and the connection between this passage and Romans 8.

2. The Landscape of Scholarly Debate

Three axes organize the history of interpretation.

The first concerns anthropology and eschatology: is the new creation of 5:17 cosmic or individual? Traditional Reformed readers and most English translations supply "he is a new creation," which directs the verse toward personal regeneration [6, 7]. Richard B. Hays and G. K. Beale argue that the Greek ellipsis and the Isaianic subtext (Isa 43 and 65) require a rendering such as "there is a new creation!", an announcement of cosmic and communal re-creation [6, 8, 9]. David E. Garland and Colin G. Kruse have traced the eschatological tension between the present new creation of 2 Cor 5:17 (Already) and the consummation of creation in Rom 8:18–30 (Not Yet) [1, 10, 11].

The second axis concerns sociorhetoric. N. T. Wright and Anthony Bash read the reconciliation (katallagē) and embassy (presbeuomen) of 5:18–20 as counter-rhetoric against imperial claims to peace and victory [12, 13]. John M. G. Barclay identifies the essence of reconciliation as an "incongruous gift" that breaks up the reciprocal order of the Mediterranean world [14, 15]. Calvin and Kruse add that this embassy is institutionalized in the local church as a continuing ministry of forgiveness, carried by the means of grace (media gratiae) of Word and sacrament [7, 16].

The third axis concerns soteriology. In 5:21, R. P. Martin and Christof Heilig stress the Septuagintal background of the cultic sin-offering (chattat) in Leviticus [17, 18]. Garland and Kruse, appealing to the antithetical parallelism of the sentence, argue for a penal substitution in which Christ was adjudicated against by God [1, 16, 19]. Paul Helm and C. Woznicki contend that Wright's covenantal "embodiment" and Calvin's forensic imputation can be unified within a real union with Christ, in which justification and sanctification form a twofold grace, and that this answers the charge of "legal fiction" [20, 21].

3. Working Thesis

This paper draws on these interpreters and on dogmatic objections, and it advances three propositions.

[Thesis 1: Eschatological epistemology and the twofold new creation.] The elliptical phrase kainē ktisis in 5:14–17 announces a cosmic new age that has already broken in (Already). It is linked to the consummation of creation in Rom 8:18–30 (Not Yet). It also embraces the microcosmic regeneration (regeneratio) of believers, who are renewed inwardly through union with Christ. (Demonstrated in Chapter One.)

[Thesis 2: Incongruous grace and the christological subversion of imperial rhetoric.] Reconciliation in 5:18–20 arises from an incongruous grace (Incongruous Gift) that dismantles the reciprocal order of the ancient world. Paul's office as ambassador (presbeuomen) subverts the violent peace of Rome (Pax Romana) on christological grounds. It is also carried out by the church as a continuing ministry of forgiveness (perpetua legatio) through the means of grace (media gratiae). (Demonstrated in Chapter Two.)

[Thesis 3: Integrated substitution and twofold grace in union.] In 5:21, "he made him to be sin" fuses the Levitical sin-offering (chattat), with its purificatory logic, and penal substitution (poena vicaria), in which God adjudicates against Christ. "That we might become the righteousness of God" is the fulfillment of a twofold grace rooted in the mystical union with Christ (unio cum Christo). Forensic justification by imputation (imputatio) is the root, and the embodiment (embodiment) of sanctification in practice is its fruit. (Demonstrated in Chapter Three.)

4. Scope and Method

The study works from the Greek text of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 (NA28). It examines syntax, lexis, and Septuagintal intertextuality, and it cross-checks the results against Romans 8 and sources on Second Temple Judaism and Greco-Roman social history.

II. Chapter One: Greek Syntax, the Epistemological Turn, and the Two Horizons of New Creation (5:11–17 and Rom 8:18–30)

1. The Syntactic Hierarchy of "the Love of Christ" and the Force of Ministry (5:14)

In 5:14 Paul names the external force that governs his ministry: "ἡ γὰρ ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ συνέχει ἡμᾶς" ("for the love of Christ holds us in its grip"). The genitive tou Christou is best read as a subjective genitive. The love in view is the love Christ displayed in his death, not the believer's love for Christ, which would be an objective genitive [16, 17]. Kruse argues that the substitutionary explanation that follows in 14b–15 ("one died for all") confirms this reading. He takes synechei to signify an external constraint, pressure from two walls that drives toward a single direction, a "motivational force rather than directional control" [16]. Martin likewise stresses that what filled Paul was not his own emotional zeal but the sovereign love of Christ shown on the cross [17].

[2 Corinthians 5:14: syntax and soteriological dynamics]

[External force] [Apostolic conviction (participle)] [Soteriological claim (ὅτι clause)]
(the substitutionary love of Christ) (a single judgment, Damascus) (one person represents all)
 │ │
 ▼ ▼
(drives toward one direction: the cross) (the ontological end of old humanity)

The aorist participle krinantas ("having judged"), which Paul uses in 14b, refers to a settled theological verdict reached once and for all, presumably on the Damascus road. Its content is stated in a ὅτι clause: "one died for all; therefore all died" (εἷς ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀπέθανεν, ἄρα οἱ πάντες ἀπέθανον). The preposition hyper carries both representation and substitution, drawing on Mediterranean practices of sacrifice and on Old Testament tradition [2, 19]. In the death of the one Messiah, the whole old humanity contained in him was judged and put to death, both legally and ontologically. The purpose clause in verse 15 (hina) says that those who live (hoi zōntes) in resurrection life no longer live for themselves. They live for the one who died and was raised. This is an ontological turn.

2. The Adverbial Restriction of "According to the Flesh" (5:16)

In verse 16 Paul states the epistemology that the cross has set in motion: "Ὥστε ἡμεῖς ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν οὐδένα οἴδαμεν κατὰ σάρκα· εἰ καὶ ἐγνώκαμεν κατὰ σάρκα Χριστόν, ἀλλὰ νῦν οὐκέτι γινώσκομεν" ("From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once knew Christ according to the flesh, we know him in this way no longer").

Rudolf Bultmann took the prepositional phrase kata sarka to modify the object Christon, and on that basis argued that Paul had no interest in the historical existence of the earthly Jesus. Garland and D. J. Moo, tracing the word order of the Pauline letters, refute this reading [1, 22]. When kata sarka modifies a noun in Paul, it regularly follows the noun (Rom 1:3; 9:5, and others). In this verse, by contrast, the objects oudena and Christon stand before the prepositional phrase and are closely bound to the verbs oidamen and egnōkamen. Kata sarka therefore does not define the object of knowledge. It qualifies the verb as an adverbial phrase, and it names the standard of evaluation belonging to the fallen old age: worldly measuring scales [1, 22]. When Paul says he once knew Christ according to the flesh, he means that as a Pharisee he judged Jesus, on the basis of Deuteronomy 21:23, to be a cursed criminal hanged on a tree. That human pride is what the light of the resurrection has permanently abolished.

3. The Elliptical Clause kainē ktisis and Its Isaianic Subtext (5:17)

Verse 17 contains the core of Paul's apocalyptic theology: "ὥστε εἴ τις ἐν Χριστῷ, καινὴ κτίσις· τὰ ἀρχαῖα παρῆλθεν, ἰδοὺ γέγονεν καινά" ("So if anyone is in Christ, new creation! The old things have passed away; see, new things have come").

The Greek sentence has no explicit subject or copula in the first clause: "εἴ τις ἐν Χριστῷ, καινὴ κτίσις." The common supplement "he is a new creation" is an individualist reduction and, in Hays's assessment, a misreading [6, 8]. Hays argues that when Paul uses ktisis ("creation") he regularly points to the cosmic horizon (Rom 8:19–22). He also shows that the immediate subtext of the verse is Isaiah 65:17 ("for I am creating new heavens and a new earth") together with Isaiah 43:18–19 ("do not remember the former things... I am about to do a new thing") [6]. The clause should therefore be rendered as an exclamation of cosmic arrival: "So if anyone is in Christ—there is a new creation!" [6, 8].

Beale adds that the vocabulary of 5:17 (ta archaia parēlthen, idou gegonen kaina) corresponds closely to the LXX of Isaiah 43:18–19 and 65:17 [9]. The promise that Isaiah had announced as a new creation in the return from Babylonian exile is, on this reading, fulfilled and inaugurated through the substitutionary death and resurrection of Christ [8, 9].

4. The Present New Creation (Already) and the Cosmic Consummation (Not Yet) in Romans 8:18–30: A Response to Calvin's Objection

Calvin's systematic-theological objection holds that a cosmic reading of 17 could weaken the inner regeneration (regeneratio) and renewal of heart (renovatio cordis) that the Spirit works in individual believers. The present study answers this by comparing 2 Corinthians 5:17 with Romans 8:18–30, to show how the cosmic macrocosm and the believer's microcosm hold together within the tension of redemptive history.

[Redemptive tension: already and not yet]
The reality of grace received in union with Christ

As Kruse and Garland point out, 2 Corinthians 5:17 concentrates on the reality of a new creation that has already broken in (Already), in the believers and the church community that are united with Christ [1, 10, 11]. Those who are in Christ leave the order of the first Adam. They become microcosmic new creatures renewed by the Spirit, and they belong to a new community in which the barrier between Jew and Gentile has fallen [8, 10].

Romans 8:18–30 takes up the same ktisis but looks at creation as a whole. It sees creation still groaning in bondage to decay, and it looks ahead to a Not Yet consummation, when the redemption of the body is completed at the parousia [10, 11]. Calvin's emphasis on the Spirit's inner regeneration therefore does not conflict with the cosmic new creation. The great eschatological dawn has risen, and its light enters the soul of the believer united with Christ, where it bears fruit in personal rebirth and sanctification [3, 20].

III. Chapter Two: Social History and the Theological Subversion of Imperial Rhetoric (5:18–20)

1. Reconciliation: Divine Sovereignty and the Deepening of Relational Communion (5:18–19)

In verses 18–19 Paul affirms the saving dynamic of the new creation: "τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ καταλλάξαντος ἡμᾶς ἑαυτῷ διὰ Χριστοῦ καὶ δόντος ἡμῖν τὴν διακονίαν τῆς καταλλαγῆς" ("All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation").

The opening phrase, "all this is from God" (ta de panta ek tou theou), declares that the initiative in reconciliation rests entirely with God the Father [1, 7]. In the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, reconciliation was an upward movement in which humans offered gifts to appease the anger of the gods. In the gospel, the Creator himself accomplishes reconciliation through the cross.

David Garland, citing C. E. B. Cranfield, draws a clear distinction between justification (dikaiōsis) and reconciliation (katallagē) [1]. In the forensic metaphor of justification, a judge may acquit a defendant without entering into a personal relationship. In the relational metaphor of reconciliation, God does more than declare the sinner innocent. He draws the sinner into a relationship of friendship and personal communion, as a host welcomes a guest to his table [1]. The participle mē logizomenos in verse 19 denotes non-imputation, the refusal to enter sin into the ledger. Calvin rightly saw that justification and the forgiveness of sins cannot be separated [7].

2. Barclay's "Incongruous Gift" and the Dismantling of Reciprocal Exchange

The central order of first-century Greco-Roman society was the patron-client system and the reciprocal exchange of gifts that Seneca formalized. In the ancient world a gift (charis) was distributed in proportion to the recipient's household, honor, and social standing (dignitas, worth).

John M. G. Barclay argues that Paul's concept of grace subverts this order at its root. It is an "incongruous gift" (Incongruous Gift) [14, 15]. The gift of Christ came to a people in whom there was no worth to recommend them, and it came unilaterally into that very absence of worth [14, 15]. The announcement of substitution in 5:14–15 and the announcement of world reconciliation in 5:19 both break apart the hierarchy of honor in the ancient world. This incongruous grace is free, but it is not cheap. It draws its recipients out of self-concern and into a "circle of charis," in which believers bear responsibility for one another [15].

3. The Ambassador "on Behalf of Christ" (presbeuomen hyper Christou), the Subversion of Pax Romana, and the Ongoing Means of Grace in the Church (5:20)

In verse 20 Paul describes the apostolic office in the language of diplomacy: "Ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ οὖν πρεσβεύομεν ὡς τοῦ θεοῦ παρακαλοῦντος διʼ ἡμῶν· δεόμεθα ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ, καταλλάγητε τῷ θεῷ" ("So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God").

The verb presbeuomen derives from the noun presbeutēs. In the Hellenistic world and the Roman Empire, the word named a senior envoy or plenipotentiary, a legatus, who acted with the authority of a ruler or the senate [13, 16]. Anthony Bash and Kruse show from first-century coins and inscriptions that the Pax Romana proclaimed on imperial monuments rested on military conquest and the forcible suppression of subject peoples. The peace that Paul proclaims, the Pax Christi, rests on the self-humbling of the cross and the remission of guilt, and it is a peace granted by divine grace [12, 13, 16]. Paul is not an envoy backed by the power of an earthly emperor. He is a divine representative, a clay jar (2 Cor 4:7), through whose lips the God who is King of the universe himself makes his appeal.

[The historical counter-character and ecclesial continuity of the office of reconciliation]

[First-century counter-rhetoric (Pax Christi)] [Ecclesiological application (perpetua legatio)]
 ─────────────────────────────────────────── ───────────────────────────────────────────
 - Subverts the Pax Romana (violent, military peace) - Extends beyond the single event to the local church
 - Proclaims a peace of self-humbling and grace - Carried by the means of grace: preaching, sacrament
 - Ambassador of weakness (astheneia), not of power - Daily declaration of forgiveness to weak believers

At this point Calvin's dogmatic suggestion widens the horizon of the text. As Calvin says in Institutes IV.1.22, Paul's embassy is not confined to a single rhetorical contest with the Roman Empire [7, 16]. It is the perpetua legatio, the continuing ministry of the forgiveness of sins that the risen Christ has entrusted to his church until the end of the age [7, 16]. Through the means of grace, namely the proclamation of the Word, the sacraments, and church discipline, the church acts as an official envoy. It applies and conveys the forgiveness and reconciliation grounded in Christ's blood to believers who daily stumble in sin [7].

IV. Chapter Three: Representative Substitution, the Fusion of Sin-Offering and Penal Substitution, and Twofold Grace in Union (5:21)

1. The Chiastic Structure of 5:21a and the Fusion of chattat with Penal Substitution

Second Corinthians 5:21 is a summit of New Testament soteriology: "τὸν μὴ γνόντα ἁμαρτίαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησεν, ἵνα ἡμεῖς γενώμεθα δικαιοσύνη θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ" ("For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God").

Kruse shows that the first and second halves of the verse form a precise antithetical parallelism [16]:

  • (A) the one who knew no sin (ton mē gnonta hamartian)
  • (B) for our sake he made him sin (hyper hēmōn hamartian epoiēsen)

===> [Substitutionary judgment: adjudicated against Christ]

  • (B′) so that we might become (ina hēmeis genōmetha)
  • (A′) in him, the righteousness of God (dikaiosynē theou en autō)

===> [Justifying judgment: adjudicated in our favour]

Interpreters divide over the sense of hamartian epoiēsen, "he made him sin." Martin and Heilig appeal to the Septuagintal background of Leviticus 4:24 and Isaiah 53:10 and argue that Christ became a cultic sin-offering (chattat, sin offering) [17, 18]. Garland objects that the New Testament nowhere else uses hamartia to mean a sin-offering. He adds that such a reading splits the meaning of one word within a single sentence and breaks the chiastic structure. He therefore urges that the verse be read as penal substitution, in which Christ was treated as a sinner and condemned to a cursed death [1, 19].

Historically these two models are not mutually exclusive. They can be fully integrated. The cultic sin-offering of the Old Testament was more than a rite of purification from defilement. The offerer laid hands on the animal, transferred guilt and curse to it, and by the shedding of its blood the divine holiness and the wrath of God's justice were satisfied [9, 18]. To say that Christ "became sin" therefore means two things. He is the fulfillment and reality of the Old Testament sin-offering, offered on the altar. And at the bar of judgment God adjudicated against him, condemning in his body the penalty of sin and the curse of the law (Gal 3:13) [16, 19].

2. "The Righteousness of God" (dikaiosynē theou) and Union with Christ (Unio cum Christo)

The clause in 21b, "so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (ina hēmeis genōmetha dikaiosynē theou en autō), is the point where Calvin's forensic imputation (imputatio) and Wright's covenantal embodiment have often come into conflict [7, 12, 23].

Calvin read the clause as justification by the imputation of Christ's righteousness, which is counted to believers freely [7]. Wright read it against the apostolic argument that begins at 2:14, and took Paul himself, in his sufferings and ministry, to embody God's covenant faithfulness as an apostolic figure [12, 23]. Christof Heilig has pointed out, however, that limiting the first-person plural hēmeis to the apostolic group conflicts with the universal substitutionary context of 14–15. It also damages the rhetorical ethos of the whole letter, in which Paul boasts only of his weakness (astheneia) [18]. The subjunctive genōmetha does not describe a mere assumption of a role. It denotes "the determining of a new existence" that the substitutionarily atoned person receives in Christ [18].

The key to resolving this dogmatic problem lies in the closing phrase of 21, en autō, "in him," which expresses the mystical union with Christ (unio cum Christo) [20, 21]. Chris Woznicki, in a서재 자료, argues that the charge of "legal fiction" that contemporary theology has raised against substitution and imputation arises from mistaking substitution for an external transaction on a ledger [21]. In Paul's soteriology, substitution and justification are not legal fictions. When the believer is united with Christ through baptism, the union is real and ontological. Christ's death becomes the believer's death, and Christ's righteousness becomes the believer's righteousness. This is a holy and redemptive participation [20, 21].

3. The Establishment of Duplex Gratia (Twofold Grace): The Scriptural Order of Justification by Imputation and the Embodiment of Sanctification

Paul Helm, analyzing Calvin's soteriology in detail, argues that from one organic root, union with Christ (unio cum Christo), there issue two graces (duplex gratia): justification (justificatio), the forensic remission of sins, and sanctification or re-creation (sanctificatio, nova creatio), the subjective renewal of character and life [20].

[Twofold grace (duplex gratia) in union with Christ and its scriptural order]

 - Divine verdict in our favour (adjudicated) - Inward renewal of heart (renovatio cordis)
 - Objective change of status (status) - Covenantal embodiment in life and ministry
 │ ▲
 └──────────────── [Necessary fruit] ────────────────┘

According to Helm, Christ cannot be divided, so those united to him receive justification and sanctification together [20]. The two are inseparable but strictly distinct, and the logical priority belongs to imputed justification [20]. To say that believers "become the righteousness of God" is first of all a change in forensic status. Christ's blameless righteousness is imputed to them, and they receive a verdict of acquittal before the judgment seat of God [20]. Those who have been justified are then led, by the Spirit's work of re-creation, into a practical embodiment of God's covenant faithfulness in their lives and ministry [20, 21].

Wright's "embodiment" is not a substitute for imputed justification. It is the necessary and visible fruit that imputed justification bears in the life of the believer (fructus justificationis). When this order of application is kept, the forensic purity of justification and the dynamic embodiment of sanctification are brought into harmony within union.

V. Objections and Responses

To test the exegetical and dogmatic soundness of this paper, I respond to three significant objections from contemporary biblical scholarship and theology.

1. Objection 1: Bultmann's Rejection of the Historical Jesus, Answered on Syntactic and Epistolary Grounds

The objection. Rudolf Bultmann took 5:16, "even though we once knew Christ according to the flesh, we know him in this way no longer," to mean that Paul had no theological interest in the historical life or teaching of the earthly Jesus. On his view, the only object of faith was the risen Lord of the heavenly kerygma.

The response.

1. Evidence from word order. In the Pauline letters, when the prepositional phrase kata sarka modifies a noun, it follows the noun without exception (Rom 1:3; 9:5; 1 Cor 1:26). In 5:16 the object Christon stands before the prepositional phrase. This confirms that kata sarka is an adverbial modifier of the verb egnōkamen [1, 22]. Paul rejected not the earthly existence of Jesus as such but the worldly standard by which, before Damascus, he judged Jesus as a criminal on the cross [1, 22].

2. Concrete usage elsewhere in the letters. In 1 Corinthians 7:10–12 (the teaching on divorce), 11:23–25 (the tradition of the Lord's Supper), and 15:3–4 (the tradition of the cross and burial), Paul appeals directly to the historical words and passion of the earthly Jesus as the highest authority for the church [1]. In Paul's theology the crucified historical Jesus and the risen Christ of the kerygma are never separated.

2. Objection 2: Wright's Restricted Model of Apostolic Embodiment, Examined by Heilig and Kruse

The objection. Wright declines to read the "righteousness of God" of 5:21b as a universal justification of believers. He reads it in terms of the rhetorical context that begins at 2:14, as the embodiment (embodiment) of covenant faithfulness in the apostolic office of Paul and his colleagues [12, 23].

The response.

1. Conflict with the theology of weakness. As Heilig points out, throughout 2 Corinthians Paul boasts only of his weakness (astheneia) over against his opponents' boasting (2 Cor 11:30; 12:8–10) [18]. To read 21 as Paul claiming that his own life embodies God's faithfulness in full would damage the rhetorical ethos of the whole letter [18].

2. The universality of the redemptive context of 6:1–2. Immediately after 5:21, in 6:1–2, Paul warns, "do not receive the grace of God in vain," and quotes Isaiah 49:8. The gospel proclaimed in 21 is not an apostolic privilege. It is the foundation of a universal soteriology that the whole Corinthian church, and the whole of humanity, is called to receive [18]. Verse 21 should therefore be read as the justifying and sanctifying event that all the people of the new creation enjoy in Christ, not as an event confined to the apostolic office.

3. Objection 3: Calvin's Concern About Osianderian Confusion, and the Defense of the Logical Priority of Twofold Grace in Union

The objection. Calvin's systematic-theological objection holds that if genōmetha is read as Heilig reads it, as "the determination of a new existence," and if this is then merged with Wright's embodiment, the result tends toward the Osianderian doctrine of an essential righteousness infused into the person. That would confuse justification and sanctification [7, 20].

The response.

1. Preserving the priority of the alien righteousness (iustitia aliena). The model proposed here distinguishes itself clearly from Osiander. Justification is not a change in the believer's inner character. It is an external event in which the perfect righteousness of Christ is imputed (imputatio) by a free act of forensic reckoning, and the believer receives a verdict of acquittal before the judgment seat [7, 16, 20].

2. Preserving the order of twofold grace within union (unio). As Helm and Woznicki have shown, embodiment (embodiment) is not a constituent element of justification itself. It is the necessary sanctifying fruit that imputed justification bears within the mystical union with Christ [20, 21]. By establishing the order in which imputed justification is logically prior and embodied sanctification follows from it, the duplex gratia avoids Osianderian confusion. It preserves both the forensic purity of justification and the practical dynamism of sanctification [20].

VI. Conclusion: Summary of Findings and Theological and Practical Implications

1. Summary of Findings

This study has reached three conclusions through historical-grammatical exegesis and dogmatic synthesis of 2 Corinthians 5:11–21.

First, in verses 14–17 the love of Christ (a subjective genitive) is the external force that governs Paul's existence. It has brought about the abandonment of the worldly standard of evaluation (kata sarka). The elliptical clause kainē ktisis announces the invasion of a cosmic new creation (Already), grounded in the Isaianic subtext of Isaiah 43 and 65. This is linked to the consummation of creation in Romans 8:18–30 (Not Yet), and it fully embraces the inner regeneration (regeneratio) of believers through union with Christ [1, 6, 8, 9, 10].

Second, the reconciliation (katallagē) of 18–20 arises from an incongruous grace (Incongruous Gift) that overturns the reciprocal order of the ancient world [14, 15]. The apostolic office of ambassador (presbeuomen) is a counter-rhetoric that subverts the violent peace of Rome (Pax Romana) [12, 13]. It is also established as a continuing ministry of forgiveness (perpetua legatio), carried out in the church through the means of grace (media gratiae) [7, 16].

Third, the phrase "he made him to be sin" in 21 is a reality that fuses the purificatory logic of the Septuagintal sin-offering (chattat) with the forensic penal substitution (poena vicaria) of an adverse divine verdict [16, 18, 19]. "That we might become the righteousness of God" describes a twofold grace (duplex gratia) that takes place in the mystical union with Christ (unio cum Christo). Its logical root is the forensic imputation (imputatio) of righteousness, and its necessary fruit is covenantal embodiment (embodiment) in life and ministry [16, 20, 21].

2. Theological and Practical Implications

Contemporary churches and pastors, who live among worldly appearances, external credentials, and a hard order of reciprocal exchange, need to recover the core of the gospel that this passage sets out.

1. Proclaiming the forensic assurance of the gospel. Pastors should convey to their people the assurance of salvation (certitudo salutis), which rests not on human merit or worth but on the imputed righteousness and complete reconciliation that believers receive in union with Christ [7, 20].

2. Making visible the alternative community of the new creation. The church should repent of any fleshly epistemology that discriminates among believers by worldly measures (kata sarka). It should make concrete in its common life the peace and love of the cosmic new creation, which has been reshaped by the grace of the cross [8, 10, 15].

3. Carrying out the holy office of Christ's ambassadors. Pastors and believers must abandon any triumphalism that boasts in worldly power. Through the weakness (astheneia) and self-humbling of the cross, they should live faithfully as ambassadors of Christ (presbeuomen), embracing the world and proclaiming daily the gospel of forgiveness [12, 13, 16].

Note to the editor (not part of the paper):

  • The Erasmus pre-review note at the top of the source (candidate questions and their adoption) is internal and has been left out. It is not part of the article.
  • The source attributes a "peer review" to the systematic theologian Calvin, and I rendered this as "internal pre-publication review" so that the paper does not attribute to John Calvin a review he did not write. The doctrinal points drawn from Calvin's writings are kept as they were.
  • The section 3 heading in the source names "Calvin" as the reformer and also as the internal reviewer. In the English text the two uses are kept separate where the context allowed.
  • The source's citations [1]–[23] are preserved as they were, and the sources list has been omitted as instructed. Before publication, the following should be checked against the library, because I could not verify them from the text alone: the서재 자료, the Institutes IV.1.22 pinpoint, the specific arguments attributed to Heilig and Bash, and the Hays and Beale attributions on Isaiah 43 and 65.
  • The source's "ὅ티" was a typo for ὅτι and has been corrected in the Greek.

셋째, [종말론 전선: 개인적 영적 중생 vs 우주적 새 창조] 5장 17절의 '새로운 피조물(kainē ktisis)'에 대해 리처드 헤이스(Richard B. Hays)는 원문 헬라어 생략 구문(hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis)의 문법 구조와 이사야 65장 17–25절의 상호텍스트성(intertextuality)을 근거로, 영한 번역본들의 "그는 새로운 피조물이다"라는 개인주의적 번역을 피판하고 "새로운 창조가 도래했다!(there is a new creation!)"

콜린 크루즈(Colin G. Kruse) 역시 5장 14절의 hyper pantōn을 단순한 "유익을 위하여(for the benefit of)"로 완화하는 해석학적 시도를 비판하며, 이것은 "모든 사람의 자리를 대신하여(instead of all)" 죽으신 형벌 대속적 대리 죽음을 뜻한다고 석의한다 [14, 17].

> "Peccatum opponitur iustitiae...

(Colin G. Kruse / Murray J. Harris)]

 (A) ton mē gnonta hamartian [
 (B) hyper hēmōn hamartian epoiēsen [
Adjudicated against Christ)
(B') ina hēmeis genōmetha [
(A') dikaiosynē theou en autō [
Adjudicated in our favour)

III.

리처드 헤이스(Richard B. Hays)는 이 구절에 대한 기존 대다수 번역본들(예: RSV, KJV, 개역개정)의 "그는 새로운 피조물이다(he is a new creation)"라는 번역이 바울의 헬라어 문장에 존재하는 생략(ellipsis) 구문을 심각하게 오인한 결과라고 지적한다 [9]. 헬라어 원문 hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis에는 '그는 ~이다(he is)'에 해당하는 주어와 계사 동사(estin)가 존재하지 않는다 [9].

> "The words 'he is' are not present in Paul's elliptical Greek sentence: hōste ei tis en Christō, kainē ktisis. In view of the fact that Paul characteristically uses ktisis in a cosmological frame of reference (see, e.g., Rom. 8:19-23) and in view of the scriptural subtexts (Isa. 65:17–25), it would be far better to complete the ellipsis... 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ—there is a new creation!'" (Richard B. Hays, Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul, p. 159) [9]

> "Nisi quis reformatis ab intus affectibus renovetur Spiritu Dei, nihil habet in Christo loci... Hence it is only the new man, that flourishes and is vigorous in the kingdom of Christ."

셋째, 동사 logizomai(계산하다/전가하다)의 부정이 가지는 법정적 효력이다.

(Media Gratiae)]

> "This Paul teaches, when he says that the embassy of reconciliation has been committed to the ministers of the Church, that they may ever and anon in the name of Christ exhort the people to be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20)."

또한 17절에 대해 전통적 개혁주의(칼빈 등)와 대다수 영역본은 ‘그는 새로운 피조물이다’(he is a new creation)로 보충하여 개인적 중생에 초점을 맞추었으나, 리처드 헤이스(Richard B. Hays)는 이사야 65장의 하위 텍스트를 논거로 ‘새로운 창조가 도래했다!’(there is a new creation!)

라이트 역시 원문의 간결한 탄성(“If anyone in Messiah, new creation!”)

III.

(Embodiment)

(Objections & Responses)

III.

(Nova Creatio)
(Renovatio)
(Embodiment)

Apocalyptic Corporate Solidarity and a Theology of Resurrection (English 2026-11-01)

Second Corinthians 1:1–11 is often read as an autobiographical aside or as a rhetorical move in Paul's dispute with his rivals at Corinth. This article argues that the passage compactly states Paul's soteriology, ecclesiology, and theology of resurrection. Through exegesis of the key Greek constructions ( ta pathēmata tou Christou , apokrima tou thanatou , and the genitive absolute synypourgountōn ) and attention to the social world of Roman patronage and Jewish liturgy, the article develops three theses. First, the Trinitarian comfort of 1:3–7 rests on an apocalyptic corporate solidarity with Christ. Second, the reciprocal structure of grace in 1:4–7 ...
