Systematic-Theological Exposition

The Light of New Creation and the Paradox of the Cross: An Integrated Study of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 on Apocalyptic Salvation-History and Apostolic Existence

Abstract. Second Corinthians 4:1–18 is usually read as Paul's defense of his apostleship. This article argues that the passage is broader. In it Paul ties together three themes: the cosmic conflict between God and "the god of this age," the new creation that shines in the face of Christ, and the bodily pattern of suffering that shapes apostolic life. Read against Second Temple apocalyptic, the imagery of Roman imperial cult, and the patronage system of Corinth, Paul's argument reverses the values of honor and status. The article then considers how his account of the outer and inner person bears on the Reformed doctrine of illumination and on the order of salvation (ordo salutis).

I. Introduction: The Salvation-Historical and Theological Center of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18

1. Context and Aim

Second Corinthians 4:1–18 is where Paul explains how the glory (doxa) of the new covenant ministry he described in chapter 3 takes concrete form in apostolic lives marked by frailty, humiliation, and persecution. The Corinthian opponents attacked his apostolic authority and the truth of his gospel on external grounds: his bodily weakness, the sufferings he had endured, his plain speech, and his refusal of financial support. They read his afflictions as evidence that God had withdrawn approval. This reasoning belonged to a world organized around honor and shame, and it expressed a theology of glory (theologia gloriae) that located God's presence in visible splendor.[2]

This study does not reduce 4:1–18 to a private apology. It places the passage within three frames: Jewish apocalyptic thought in the Second Temple period, the iconography of Roman imperial rhetoric, and the patronage system through which Roman society arranged its relationships. It then reads the passage against the Reformed account of how salvation is applied to believers. The central claim is that, for Paul, the cosmic penetration of God's saving work and the inward renewal of the believer belong together.[1, 2]

2. The Shape of the Scholarly Debate

Current scholarship on 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 divides along three lines.

The first is hermeneutical and theological. It concerns whether the passage should be read existentially or apocalyptically. Rudolf Bultmann (1976) treated the "god of this age" in 4:3–4 and the "inner" and "outer" person in 4:16 as descriptions of an individual's self-understanding and decision.[3] Ernst Käsemann (1971) and J. Louis Martyn (1997) answered that the text describes a conflict between cosmic spheres of dominion (Herrschaftsbereiche) and God's apocalyptic invasion of the world. It does not describe inner psychology.[4, 5]

The second line is sociohistorical. John M. G. Barclay (2015) and David A. deSilva (2000) read the clay-jar image in 4:7 and Paul's catalogue of hardships as counter-rhetoric. On christological grounds, it dismantles the honor hierarchies and showy patronage of Roman society.[6, 7]

The third line is applicatory. It asks whether the cross-shaped existence described here belongs to Paul alone or to all believers. Krister Stendahl (1976) held that the sufferings in 4:7–12 and the bearing of Jesus' death in the body belong to Paul's historically specific defense of his apostleship and should not be generalized.[8] Michael J. Gorman and Richard B. Hays (1989) replied that this suffering is a cruciform spirituality (cruciformity) in which the whole community takes part, and that it is a public manifestation of the new creation.[9, 10]

3. Thesis and Four Propositions

Taking account of this debate, the study advances four propositions.

  • [Proposition 1] The veiling of the gospel by "the god of this age" and the declaration of light in 4:6 are more than inner decisions of individuals. They are an eschatological act of new creation (kainē ktisis). The same divine power that spoke light into being in Genesis 1:3 breaks the cosmic darkness of Satan and reveals God's glory in the face of Jesus Christ.[11, 12]
  • [Proposition 2] The phrase eikōn tou theou in 4:4 ("image of God") dismantles the false glory of Roman imperial liturgy and imperial iconography on christological grounds. Christ is the eschatological reality who completes the image that the first Adam, who was subject to decay, failed to bear: the last Adam.[13, 14]
  • [Proposition 3] The apostolic existence of "clay jars" (ostrakina skeuē) in 4:7 and of bearing "the dying" (nekrōsis) of Jesus in the body (4:7–15) subverts the patronage and honor-shame systems of Greco-Roman society. It demonstrates the incongruity of grace (Incongruity of Grace) and the entry of resurrection life (zōē). It is the heart of apostolic ethos.[6, 15]
  • [Proposition 4] The decay of the "outer person" and the renewal of the "inner person" in 4:16–18, together with the contrast between "the light momentary affliction" and "the eternal weight of glory" (baros doxēs), do not express a Platonic dualism of substance. They are a syntactic demonstration of an apocalyptic eschatology that moves from the mortality of the first Adam to the resurrection form of Christ, the last Adam.[16, 17]

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

The study takes the Greek text of Nestle-Aland 28 (NA28) as its base and attends to the intertextual background in the Septuagint (LXX). It focuses on the following terms and phrases, whose lexical and syntactic relations it works out: ho theos tou aiōnos toutou (4:4), eikōn tou theou (4:4), phōs ek skotous (4:6), ostrakina skeuē (4:7), nekrōsis ("dying," 4:10), ho esō/exō anthrōpos (inner/outer person, 4:16), and aiōnion baros doxēs ("eternal weight of glory," 4:17).[18]

II. Apocalyptic Re-creation and the Christological Image (2 Cor 4:1–6)

1. The Cosmic Veiling by "the God of This Age"

In 4:1–3 Paul states that, as a minister of the new covenant, he has renounced deception and the distortion of God's word. By the open statement of truth he commends himself to every human conscience before God. If the gospel is veiled, however, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In 4:4 Paul names the cause:

> ἐν οἷς ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἐτύφλωσεν τὰ νοήματα τῶν ἀπίστων > (en hois ho theos tou aiōnos toutou etyphlōsen ta noēmata tōn apistōn) > "In their case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers…" (2 Cor 4:4a, my translation)

The genitive ho theos tou aiōnos toutou does not refer to a cosmic space. It refers to the temporal and worldly dominion of "the present evil age," which runs from the fall of Adam until the eschatological consummation.[19, 20] The Greek of Galatians 1:4 expresses the same idea: ek tou aiōnos tou enestōtos ponērou. Paul Barnett and Willem Hendriksen both observe that the reading of aiōn as a spatial, physical order created by an evil god comes from Manichaean and Gnostic thought. Such readings lose sight of the temporal, salvation-historical character of the Greek word.[19, 21]

The church fathers faced a different problem. Tertullian, John Chrysostom, and Augustine feared Manichaean dualism. Some of them therefore took ho theos as referring to God, so that the verse said that "God" had blinded the eyes of unbelievers. This reading makes the Greek syntax awkward.[22] Calvin and Charles Hodge identify the subject as Satan.[21, 23] Satan is called "god of this age" not because he is God. He holds that title because unbelievers serve him as slaves and carry out his blind purposes.[21]

2. Imperial Iconography and Christ as the Image of God

In the second half of 4:4 Paul names the reality that Satan seeks to conceal:

> εἰς τὸ μὴ αὐγάσαι τὸν φωτισμὸν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τῆς δόξης τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ > (eis to mē augasai ton phōtismon tou euangeliou tēs doxēs tou Christou, hos estin eikōn tou theou) > "…so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." (2 Cor 4:4b, my translation)

In first-century Corinth, a Roman colony and a commercial city, coins and temple statues presented the emperor as Divus ("divine") and Sōtēr ("savior"). His face (prosōpon) displayed the peace and divine glory of the empire.[24] When Paul proclaimed "the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ," he set a counter-cultural apocalyptic event against the rhetoric of imperial imagery. He turned that rhetoric upside down on christological grounds.[25]

Colin Kruse and Ralph Martin trace the concept to the Adam christology of Genesis 1:26–27 and to Jewish wisdom literature, especially Wisdom 7:26.[14, 26] In their reading, Christ is the complete embodiment in his divinity of God's glorious Shekinah, the divine presence made present in human form. In his humanity, he is the archetype of the true humanity that Adam lost through the fall.[14, 26]

3. The Reprise of Genesis 1:3 and the Inner Illumination

In 4:6 Paul connects his own Damascus experience and the regeneration of believers to the original creation of light:

> ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ὁ εἰπών· Ἐκ σκότους φῶς λάμψει, ὃς ἔλαμψεν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν πρὸς φωτισμὸν τῆς γνώσεως τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν προσώπῳ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ > (hoti ho theos ho eipōn: Ek skotous phōs lampsei, hos elampsen en tais kardiais hēmōn pros phōtismon tēs gnōseōs tēs doxēs tou theou en prosōpō Iēsou Christou) > "For the God who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (2 Cor 4:6, my translation)

Richard Hays argues that Paul fuses Genesis 1:3 with Isaiah 9:2. Through this fusion Paul declares that the God who commanded the first creation is the same God who redeems.[12, 27] On this reading, the conversion of a believer through the proclamation of the gospel is a sovereign act of new creation (kainē ktisis). The divine power that called light out of nothing reappears in the corrupt heart of a sinner.[27, 28]

Calvin, commenting on this verse, draws out what became a central Reformed idea of revelation: the double illumination (duplex illuminatio).[29] The outward proclamation of the word (illuminatio exterior) and the hidden inward work of the Holy Spirit (arcana operatio Spiritus Sancti, illuminatio interior) must come together. Only then are the eyes of the spirit opened to see the face of Christ.[29, 30] This section establishes Propositions 1 and 2.

III. Cross Theology and the Paradox of Grace: The Apostolic Clay Jar and Sovereign Grace (2 Cor 4:7–15)

1. The Clay Jar (ostrakina skeuē) and the Dismantling of Patronage

In 4:7 Paul sets the sovereign power of the new covenant ministry against the human lowliness of the apostle himself:

> Ἔχομεν δὲ τὸν θησαυρὸν τοῦτον ἐν ὀστρακίνοις σκεύεσιν, ἵνα ἡ ὑπερβολὴ τῆς δυνάμεως ᾖ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ μὴ ἐξ ἡμῶν > (Echomen de ton thēsauron touton en ostrakinois skeuesin, hina hē hyperbolē tēs dynameōs ēi tou theou kai mē ex hēmōn) > "But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that the surpassing power may be from God and not from us." (2 Cor 4:7, my translation)

David Garland points to the fragility, lowliness, and disposability of clay vessels in the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean.[15] In first-century Corinth, wealthy patrons bound ministers to their networks through financial support and displayed their own honor through that support.[31] When Paul refused such support and described himself as a clay jar, he undermined the symbolic capital of wealth, honor, and lineage on christological grounds. His refusal is a bodily form of counter-rhetoric.[6, 31]

John Barclay argues that the image makes the incongruity of grace (Incongruity of Grace) visible.[6] To show that the greatness of the power belongs to God alone and not to the qualities or eloquence of the human minister, Paul's apostolic existence is deliberately left in weakness.[6, 15]

2. The Catalogue of Sufferings and the Bearing of Jesus' Death (nekrōsis)

After the catalogue of hardships in 4:8–9, Paul spells out the theological meaning of these sufferings in 4:10–11:

> πάντοτε τὴν νέκρωσιν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματι περιφέροντες, ἵνα καὶ ἡ ζωὴ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματι ἡμῶν φανερωθῇ > (pantote tēn nekrōsin tou Iēsou en tō sōmati peripherontes, hina kai hē zōē tou Iēsou en tō sōmati hēmōn phanerōthēi) > "Always carrying about in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body." (2 Cor 4:10, my translation)

Ryan Schellenberg reads the phrase nekrōsis ("dying" or "deathliness") as drawing on the imagery of the captive in a Roman triumphal procession. Paul carries the death of Jesus about in his body in a paradoxical epiphany procession. In it the crucified and risen Jesus is displayed so that his life flows through the broken body of the apostle to the communities he serves.[32, 33] The clay-jar existence of the apostle is therefore a model of the cruciform spirituality (cruciformity) in which the whole believing community is meant to share.[9, 15] This section establishes Proposition 3.

IV. Christian Anthropology and Eschatological Transformation: The Outer and Inner Person (2 Cor 4:16–18)

1. The Apocalyptic and Eschatological Dualism of the Outer and Inner Person

In 4:16 Paul gives the basis for not losing heart, and in doing so he states the core of his Christian anthropology:

> Διὸ οὐκ ἐγκακοῦμεν, ἀλλ᾽ εἰ καὶ ὁ ἔξω ἡμῶν ἄνθρωπος διαφθείρεται, ἀλλ᾽ ὁ ἔσω ἡμῶν ἀνακαινοῦται ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἡμέρᾳ > (Dio ouk enkakoumen, all' ei kai ho exō hēmōn anthrōpos diaphtheiretai, all' ho esō hēmōn anakainoutai hēmerai kai hēmerai) > "So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day." (2 Cor 4:16, my translation)

Hellenistic philosophical and Gnostic readings have taken this verse as a Platonic dualism of body and soul.[34, 35] Murray Harris and Colin Kruse show that the text presupposes a holistic anthropology.[36, 37]

Ernst Käsemann and Christoph Heilig have argued persuasively that for Paul the "outer person" is not simply the physical aging of an individual. It is the existence of the whole created order, which is bound up with the old age and groans under Adam's dominion of death. The "inner person" is the whole human being of the new creation, renewed day by day in Christ and moving toward the spiritual resurrection body, with the Spirit as guarantee (arrabōn, 5:5).[17, 38, 39]

2. The "Eternal Weight of Glory" (aiōnion baros doxēs) and the Ethic of Looking

In 4:17 Paul sets present affliction against future glory in a deliberate rhetorical contrast:

> τὸ γὰρ παραυτίκα ἐλαφρὸν τῆς θλίψεως ἡμῶν καθ᾽ ὑπερβολὴν εἰς ὑπερβολὴν αἰώνιον βάρος δόξης κατεργάζεται ἡμῖν > (to gar parautika elaphron tēs thlipseōs hēmōn kath' hyperbolēn eis hyperbolēn aiōnion baros doxēs katergazetai hēmin) > "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." (2 Cor 4:17, my translation)

Paul plays on the Hebrew root kbd, which yields both "glory" (kābôd) and "heaviness" (kābēd). The affliction of the present may weigh heavily. Yet the weight of resurrection glory, which the phrase kath' hyperbolēn eis hyperbolēn ("beyond all measure") describes, makes the affliction of this age appear "momentary" and "light" (elaphron).[16, 40]

N. T. Wright stresses that faith in the unseen does not reject the material world. It is a change in eschatological vision, by which the believer anticipates, through faith, the visible and eternal new creation of God.[40, 41] Paul makes the same point in 4:18, where the believers are "looking not at what is seen but at what is unseen." This section establishes Proposition 4.

V. Refutation and Response

This section states three of the strongest objections to the theological framework developed above and responds to each.

1. Objection 1: Bultmann's Existential Reduction (Reduction to Inner Decision)

  • The objection: Rudolf Bultmann demythologized the "god of this age" in 4:3–4 and the "inner person" in 4:16. On his reading, they describe the inner decision of the individual subject and a change in self-understanding.[3, 42]
  • Response: This approach shrinks the apocalyptic language of Scripture into inner psychology. As Käsemann and Martyn demonstrated, Paul's apocalyptic cosmology does not place human beings on neutral ground. They stand between the old age and the new, between "the god of this age" and the true God, within a conflict of cosmic spheres of dominion.[4, 5] The proclamation of the gospel does more than change individual psychology. It is an apocalyptic invasion (Apocalyptic Invasion) in which the reign of Satan is disarmed and the world is won back for God's sovereignty.[4, 5]

2. Objection 2: Stendahl's Limitation to Apostolic Particularity (Exclusion of Ordinary Believers)

  • The objection: Krister Stendahl argued that the clay jars of 4:7–12 and the bearing of Jesus' death in the body should not be generalized to ordinary believers. They belong to Paul's historically specific defense of his apostleship, in which he was beaten and humiliated.[8]
  • Response: Stendahl rightly notes the apologetic context of the passage, but he misses the universal reach of its sanctifying logic. Paul says in 4:15 that "all things are for your sake." The apostle's suffering is therefore a model that leads the church toward life.[15, 33] As Gorman and Hays show, the clay-jar existence of the apostle offers a universal principle. Every believer is called to take part in it by setting aside self-centered boasting and entering a cruciform spirituality (cruciformity).[9, 10]

3. Objection 3: The Patristic Attempt to Avoid Dualism (Reading "the God of This Age" as God)

  • The objection: Some early church fathers and certain orthodox commentators, anxious to block Manichaean dualism, read ho theos tou aiōnos toutou in 4:4 to mean that "the God of this world" had blinded unbelievers.[22]
  • Response: This patristic reading bends the grammar of the text in order to serve a church-historical purpose, that of blocking Manichaeism. The Greek word order of tou aiōnos toutou points to "the god of this age." Satan is called "god of this age" not because he is God but because he holds the minds of fallen unbelievers in deception and blindness.[21, 22] In 4:6, moreover, the Creator God is the one who shines light. The contrast with 4:4 makes it plain that the subject of 4:4 is Satan.[12, 22]

VI. Conclusion: Summary of Findings and Doctrinal Implications

This study has read 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 through salvation-historical, exegetical, and dogmatic lenses and has reached the following conclusions.

First, 4:1–6 shows the continuity of revelation between the first creation and the re-creation. Against the spiritual blinding carried out by Satan, "the god of this age," the Creator God shines in the hearts of believers the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Jesus Christ. This is an apocalyptic act of new creation, completed through the outward proclamation of the word and the inward illumination of the Spirit (duplex illuminatio).[12, 29]

Second, 4:7–15 sets out the paradox of grace grounded in the theology of the cross. The image of the clay jar, which signifies the apostle's frailty, subverts the honor-shame norms and patronage systems of the period. God placed the treasure in clay vessels so that the incongruity of grace and his sovereign power might be shown.[6, 15]

Third, 4:16–18 proclaims a holistic anthropology and an apocalyptic eschatology. The decay of the "outer person" is the decline of earthly life under the mortality of the created order. The renewal of the "inner person" is the resurrection work that the Spirit, as guarantee, carries out day by day in conformity to the image of Christ.[17, 38] Believers who look beyond the afflictions of earthly courts to the eternal weight of glory (aiōnion baros doxēs) and to the new creation that will become visible can endure without losing heart.[16, 40]

The doctrinal implications of this study are clear. When the church and its theology are absorbed in worldly glory, the theology of glory (theologia gloriae), and the gospel of prosperity, 2 Corinthians 4 warns that the essence of faith and ministry lies in the cross and in the transcendent grace of God, who works through broken clay jars. Believers are called to a life of apocalyptic hope. Even as the outer person wastes away, they do not lose heart, and in the daily renewal of the inner person they receive the hope of resurrection.[15, 17]

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis

The Light of New Creation and the Paradox of the Clay Vessel: An Exegetical Study of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 on Apocalyptic Salvation-History and Apostolic Existence

I. Introduction: The Central Questions of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 for Salvation-History and Theology

1. Background and Purpose

In Corinth, the Roman colony and commercial hub of the province of Achaia in the first century, the Apostle Paul's defense of his apostolic authority was not a private apology or a rhetorical exercise in self-defense [1, 2]. It was a contest over the nature of the cosmic history inaugurated by the cross and resurrection of Christ, and over the character of the ministers of the new covenant In 2 Corinthians 4:1–18, Paul takes the "surpassing glory of the Spirit-given new covenant" introduced in chapter 3 and explains it through the historical suffering of the apostle, his bodily frailty, and the eschatological contrast of the hope of resurrection. This makes the passage one of the principal texts in New Testament theology [1, 4].

The rivals in Corinth, and certain well-established members of the congregation, had absorbed the competitive honor-shame culture of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean and the system of patronage that structured Roman society [2, 5]. They made rhetorical polish, public reputation, physical robustness, and financial independence the marks of apostolic legitimacy. Against this standard, Paul's beatings, poverty, self-supporting labor as a tentmaker, and weakened body were read as evidence of divine abandonment [2, 5].

This study does not treat 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 as a case study for imported philosophical concepts or modern psychology. It aims to read the text as a historical and grammatical exegesis within the framework of Second Temple Jewish apocalyptic thought, the precise syntax of the Greek text, the imperial cult and its visual iconography in first-century Roman cities, and the patronage structures of Corinthian society [2, 6, 7]. The study also seeks to show that the apocalyptic salvation-history of the passage integrates with the ordo salutis as Calvin has argued it, with the total depravity of humanity (depravatio totalis), with trinitarian monotheism, and with the media gratiae (means of grace) [8, 9].

2. Scholarly Debate and the State of Research

Current debate over 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 in New Testament and systematic theology forms three main fronts.

The first is hermeneutical and theological: existential dissolution versus apocalyptic cosmology and pneumatological illumination. Rudolf Bultmann (1976) read the "god of this age" (4:3–4) and the "outer and inner person" (4:16) as matters of existential self-understanding and decision, a demythologized reading that located the drama in the individual believer's relation to God [8, 10]. Ernst Käsemann (1971) and J. Louis Martyn (1997) objected that Bultmann's individualistic psychology missed the point. They argued that the text describes a cosmic conflict between the old and new ages, a struggle among Herrschaftsbereiche (spheres of dominion) and an apocalyptic invasion of God into the world [8, 11]. Richard B. Hays (1989) and Calvin both argued from 4:6 that the creation-light declaration links the first creation with the new creation. For Calvin, this light is the secret inward work of the Spirit (arcana operatio Spiritus Sancti), the inner illumination (illuminatio interior) that enters the heart of the sinner and effects personal regeneration [8, 12, 13].

The second is history-of-religions, sociological, and iconographic. Bruce W. Winter (1995) and Christoph Heilig (2017), drawing on inscriptions from the imperial cult in the Achaian league of first-century Corinth, documented how the Forum was saturated with imperial coins, statues, and honorific monuments. Against this, Paul proclaimed that the humble face of the crucified Christ was the true eikōn tou theou (image of God). This is a counter-rhetoric directed at imperial propaganda [6, 7]. John M. G. Barclay (2015) and David A. deSilva (2000) argued that the image of the clay vessel (ostrakina skeuē, 4:7) undoes the symbolic capital and patronage networks of the Mediterranean world, and makes visible the Incongruity of Grace, the acceptance of the unworthy sinner in God's court of reputation [5, 14]. Bruce Lowe (2013) and Charles Hodge, by contrast, held that the image is completed only on the judicial frame of the imputation of Christ's righteousness (imputatio iustitiae) and forensic justification [8, 15].

The third is anthropological and applicative. Krister Stendahl (1976) limited the suffering and the "bearing of the death of Jesus" in 4:7–12 to Paul's own historical defense of apostolic authority, and denied that it should be generalized to all believers [1, 8]. Michael J. Gorman (2001) and Colin Kruse (2015) answered that nekrōsis (the "dying" of Jesus) in 4:10–11 describes a cruciform spirituality (Cruciformity) that the whole community shares. They read it as the sanctifying mediation of mortificatio (the putting to death of the flesh) and vivificatio (the making alive of the spirit) [4, 16]. Murray J. Harris and Scott J. Hafemann (1994) also argued that the contrast of outer and inner person in 4:16–18 does not reflect Platonic substance dualism. It rests on an Adam Christology in which the believer moves from the mortality of the first Adam toward the resurrection form of the last Adam, day by day (anakainoutai) [4, 17].

3. Thesis and Four Propositions

This study brings these debates together and establishes and defends four propositions.

  • [Proposition 1]: The declaration of light in 2 Corinthians 4:6 is an apocalyptic act of new creation (kainē ktisis) that shatters the false glory of imperial iconography fostered by Satan. It is also the ordo salutis event in which the Spirit's inner illumination (illuminatio interior) impresses the image of Christ (eikōn tou theou) on the "heart" (the cardiac center) of the spiritually blinded sinner.
  • [Proposition 2]: The spiritual veiling caused by "the god of this age" (ho theos tou aiōnos toutou, 4:3–4) is not a deterministic outcome of Satan's independent sovereignty. It is a moral guilt in which human total depravity (depravatio totalis) combines with Satan's instrumental blinding. It takes place under the absolute sovereignty of the triune God, as a judicial abandonment (derelictio iudicialis).
  • [Proposition 3]: The apostolic existence of "clay vessels" (ostrakina skeuē, 4:7) and of "bearing the dying of Jesus" (nekrōsis, 4:10–11) undoes the self-glorification of first-century Roman patronage. It makes visible the Incongruity of Grace, which demonstrates forensic justification. It is also the sanctifying mediation of mortificatio and vivificatio, through which life (zōē) flows to the whole community.
  • [Proposition 4]: The wasting of the outer person (ho exō anthrōpos) and the renewal of the inner person (ho esō anthrōpos) in 4:16–18 are not Platonic substance dualism. They form an apocalyptic anthropology grounded in Adam Christology. Through the media gratiae, believers are formed day by day (anakainoutai) into the "weight of glory" (baros doxēs) of the resurrection. This is an eschatological ethic of faith.

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

This study takes the Greek text of Nestle-Aland 28 (NA28) as its basis and uses intertextual analysis with the Septuagint. Lexically, it examines word-level exegesis of eilikrineia (sincerity, 4:2), ho theos tou aiōnos toutou (the god of this age, 4:4), eikōn tou theou (image of God, 4:4), phōs ek skotous (light out of darkness, 4:6), ostrakina skeuē (clay vessel, 4:7), nekrōsis (dying, 4:10), exō and esō anthrōpos (outer and inner person, 4:16), anakainoutai (is renewed, 4:16), and aiōnion baros doxēs (eternal weight of glory, 4:17). It applies Wallace's syntax and Campbell's theory of verbal aspect to establish the hierarchy of clauses [4, 18].

II. Apocalyptic New Creation and the Image of Christ (2 Cor 4:1–6)

This section argues for [Proposition 1] and [Proposition 2] through a syntactic analysis of 4:1–6, together with an exegesis of imperial iconography and the ordo salutis in the inner illumination of the heart.

1. "The God of This Age" and the Veiling of the Gospel: Trinitarian Monotheism

In 4:1 Paul writes, "Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not lose heart" (Διὰ τοῦτο, ἔχοντες τὴν διακονίαν ταύτην... He grounds his apostolic boldness in the eschatological glory of the new covenant ministry described in chapter 3 [1, 4]. The word eilikrineia (sincerity) in 4:2, together with the statement that he does not "distort the word of God" (μηδὲ δολοῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ), stands opposite the kapēleuontes ("peddling," 2:17), the hawkers who sell the word for gain [1, 19].

In 4:3–4, however, Paul faces a serious problem. If the apostolic gospel is so glorious, why is it hidden from so many? His answer introduces the striking phrase "the god of this age" (ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου) [1, 8]:

Syntactically, the genitive attributive phrase tou aiōnos toutou does not refer to the physical cosmos. Aiōn denotes the temporal present evil age (ho enestōs aiōn ponēros, Gal 1:4), which began with the fall of Adam and stands under Satan's power [1, 4].

In the history of interpretation, early fathers such as Tertullian, John Chrysostom, and Augustine were concerned to resist any Manichaean dualism in which two equal principles, a good god and an evil god, stand against each other. Some of them therefore read ho theos in 4:4 as a reference to God, which produces the grammatically awkward sense that "God blinded the minds of unbelievers" [8, 20]. Alfred Plummer and Charles Hodge showed that this reading arose from doctrinal anxiety rather than from the text itself, and that ho theos tou aiōnos toutou clearly refers to Satan [8, 20].

As Calvin rightly observed, Satan is called "god of this age" not because he has a divine essence (essentia) or a sovereignty independent of God [8]. The Second Temple evidence on demonology, such as the "Angel of Darkness" and "Belial" of 1QS 3:20–21 from Qumran, shows that Satan's dominion is a limited instrumental authority under the absolute sovereignty of God [1, 8]. The primary cause of unbelief is not only Satan's external blocking. It is the total depravity (depravatio totalis) rooted deep in human nature since the fall of Adam, together with an active suppression of divine truth (noēmata) [8]. God gives over the rebels to the futility of their own minds. This is a judicial abandonment (derelictio iudicialis), and Satan serves as an instrument of that judgment by blinding the eyes of unbelievers [8]. The exegesis of 4:4, therefore, does not support a deterministic doctrine of Satan. It establishes both human moral guilt and the absolute sovereignty of God [8].

2. The Appropriation of Genesis 1:3 and the Inner Illumination of the Spirit (illuminatio interior)

Paul answers the cosmic darkness of 4:4 with the overwhelming language of creation in 4:6:

Richard B. Hays analyzes this verse as a complex intertextual fusion of two foundational Old Testament passages: Genesis 1:3 ("Let there be light," LXX genēthētō phōs) and Isaiah 9:2 ("The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light," LXX phōs lampsei eph' hymas) [12, 13]. By drawing on the verb lampsei from Genesis 1:3, Paul identifies the God who spoke light out of nothing at creation with the God who brings salvation through Christ [12, 13].

The place where this divine illumination (phōtismos) shines is, before anything else, "in our hearts" (ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν) [4, 12]. The phrase connects directly with the "tablets of human hearts" of 3:3 (plaxin kardiais sarkinais). It shows how the light of redemption enters the soul of an individual sinner, which is the heart of the ordo salutis [4, 8]. The gospel proclaimed outwardly (illuminatio exterior) may be brilliant, but a totally depraved person cannot perceive it on his own [8, 13]. Only when the God who commanded light at the beginning causes his inner illumination to shine on the heart by the secret work of the Spirit (arcana operatio Spiritus Sancti) do personal regeneration (regeneratio) and conversion take place [8, 13].

3. The Image of God on the Face of Christ and the Critique of Roman Imperial Iconography

In 4:4 and 4:6 Christ is proclaimed as the "image of God" (εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ), and that glory is located "in the face of Jesus Christ" (ἐν προσώπῳ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ) [1, 4]. Colin Kruse and Jacob Jervell read eikōn tou theou as an Adam Christology, the "last Adam" set over against the first Adam of Genesis 1:26. They also note its links with Jewish wisdom traditions, such as Wisdom 7:26 ("she is a reflection of eternal light and an image of his goodness"), and see in the phrase a trinitarian ontology [4, 21].

According to the historical inscriptions studied by Bruce W. Winter and Christoph Heilig, the Forum of first-century Roman Corinth was filled with temples to the Julian family, imperial coins, portrait statues, and honorific monuments, all of which saturated the public space [6, 7]. The inscriptions describe imperial priests, and the emperor was presented as "the invulnerable victor" and guarantor of world order, styled as Divus (divine) and Sōtēr (savior) [1, 6].

Paul exposes Satan, "the god of this age," as the one who projects divine glory onto the imperial portrait (eikōn) and onto visual coinage, thereby blinding the minds of unbelievers [1, 6]. He rejects the false glory that the visible statues of Roman emperors present. In its place he proclaims the humble face (prosōpon) of the crucified and risen Jesus Christ as the true eikōn tou theou, in which the infinite wisdom, righteousness, goodness, and power of God are truly revealed [1, 6]. This is a theological counter-rhetoric that dismantles imperial cult from within, and it is one of the clearest examples of apocalyptic counter-rhetoric in the letter [6, 7]. [Proposition 1] and [Proposition 2] are thus established.

III. Social Context and the Ethos of the Clay Vessel (2 Cor 4:7–15)

This section argues for [Proposition 3] by examining the syntax and social-historical meaning of the clay-vessel image, the catalogue of suffering, and the quotation of Psalm 116.

1. The Clay Vessel, the Dismantling of Roman Patronage, and Forensic Justification

Immediately after the great declaration of new-creation glory in 4:6, Paul makes a sharp reversal in 4:7:

Here ostrakinois skeuesin ("earthenware vessels") refers to common clay pots fired in a kiln. David E. Garland and Bruce Lowe identify three exegetical features of this image [1, 15]:

[Three exegetical features of the clay vessel (ostrakina skeuē), after David E. Garland]

1. Fragility : Breaks easily and cracks under impact. It has no inner strength to protect its treasure.
2. Lowliness : Not a gold or silver vessel, nor bronze, but a cheap clay lamp from the marketplace.
3. Expendability: Once broken, it cannot be repaired and is thrown on the refuse heap.
──> Counter-rhetoric: dismantles worldly symbolic capital (wealth, honor, boasting)
and makes visible the omnipotence of God alone.

In first-century Corinth, wealthy patrons supported ministers financially and received public honor (timē), obedience, and praise in return, thereby building symbolic capital [5, 15]. Paul's rivals in Corinth appealed to outward polish and rhetorical display as grounds for apostolic status [1, 5]. When Paul describes himself as a clay vessel and firmly refuses the financial support of elite patrons, he rejects incorporation into the patronage system. He defines himself instead as God's steward (oikonomos) and servant (hypēretēs). This was a social-historical counter-strategy [1, 5].

As John M. G. Barclay observes, the fact that God placed the treasure of the gospel in broken clay rather than gold makes the Incongruity of Grace visible in the starkest terms [5, 14]. The image connects with 2 Corinthians 5:21 ("He made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God"). It exposes the fact that human merit and physical excellence provide no qualification before God [1, 8]. Only on the judicial structure of forensic justification, in which the perfect righteousness Christ achieved on the cross is imputed to sinners (imputatio iustitiae), can the clay vessel of an apostle be accepted and shown to possess a power that comes from God alone (hē hyperbolē tēs dynameōs ēi tou theou) [8, 15].

2. The Catalogue of Suffering and the Sanctifying Dynamic of Nekrōsis (Mortificatio and Vivificatio)

In 4:8–9 Paul arranges the apostle's real afflictions in a poetic structure of four antithetical pairs [1]:

  • en panti thlibomenoi ("afflicted in every way") ↔ all' ou stenochōroumenoi ("but not crushed")
  • aporoumenoi ("perplexed") ↔ all' ouk exaporoumenoi ("but not in despair")
  • diōkomenoi ("persecuted") ↔ all' ouk egkataleipomenoi ("but not forsaken")
  • kataballomenoi ("struck down") ↔ all' ouk apollymenoi ("but not destroyed")

In 4:10–11 Paul states the salvation-historical and sanctifying cause of this suffering:

Nekrōsis here does not mean a single act of death (thanatos). It denotes an ongoing process of dying, or the state of being given over to death [1, 16]. The embodiment of the dying of Jesus that Paul describes is not simply bad luck or patient endurance [8, 16]. In line with Calvin's emphasis on sanctification, when the apostle bears the dying of Jesus in his body in the field of gospel ministry, this is mortificatio, the putting to death of the corrupt flesh that still remains in him [8, 16].

When the apostle passes through the suffering of self-denial in union with the death of Christ, the life of the risen Jesus (zōē) becomes visible in his mortal body. This is vivificatio, the making alive of the spirit [8, 16]. The statement of 4:12, "So death is at work in us, but life in you" (ὥστε ὁ θάνατος ἐν ἡμῖν ἐνεργεῖται, ἡ δὲ ζωὴ ἐν ὑμῖν), shows that the cruciform suffering of the apostle is the means through which resurrection life flows to the whole community. It is a pattern of sanctification [4, 16].

3. The Quotation of Psalm 116:10 and the Covenantal Witness of Pistis

In 4:13 Paul quotes Psalm 116:10 (LXX 115:1) directly:

Psalm 116 is a covenantal thanksgiving psalm. A speaker bound by the cords of death and Sheol, after experiencing God's deliverance, makes a vow and praises God before the congregation [1]. Paul identifies himself with the speaker's "spirit of faith" (pisteōs) [1]. Because he is sure that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise Paul and the Corinthians and present them together before him (4:14), the apostle preaches the gospel boldly even in the suffering of a clay vessel [1, 4]. His suffering is therefore not a mark of shame. It is a public testimony grounded in covenantal faithfulness (pisteōs) [1, 5]. [Proposition 3] is thus established.

IV. Syntactic Hierarchy and Apocalyptic Anthropology (2 Cor 4:16–18)

This section argues for [Proposition 4] through an analysis of the syntactic hierarchy of 4:16–18, the eschatological contrast of outer and inner person, and the content of the media gratiae.

1. The Syntactic and Eschatological Hierarchy of the Outer Person (ho exō anthrōpos) and the Inner Person (ho esō anthrōpos)

In 4:16 Paul draws the conclusion of his apostolic argument:

Syntactically the verse is built on a concessive clause (ei kai) and an adversative contrast (all') [1, 18]. The wasting of the outer person is expressed in the indicative present passive diaphtheiretai. It is a creaturely reality. The renewal of the inner person (anakainoutai, present passive) is also an eschatological reality, one that the Spirit accomplishes day by day [1, 18].

Margaret E. Thrall and Victor Paul Furnish define ho exō anthrōpos as the whole human being under the historical mortality that others see from outside. Ho esō anthrōpos is the whole inner person who is renewed by the Spirit day by day before God [1, 18].

[4:16–18 The contrast of the eschatological dualism]

1. Ontological level : Outer person (ho exō anthrōpos) <───> Inner person (ho esō anthrōpos)
 - Creaturely mortality of the first Adam - New creation in the last Adam (kainē ktisis)
 - Wasting and decay
2. Affliction and glory: Light momentary affliction (to elaphron) <───> Eternal weight of glory (aiōnion baros doxēs)
 - Brief and limited (parautika) - Beyond all measure (kath' hyperbolēn)
3. Epistemic horizon : Things seen (blepomena) <───> Things unseen (mē blepomena)
 - Temporary (proskaira) - Eternal (aiōnia)

2. Rejection of Platonic Dualism and the Adam Christology

Many critics read the contrast of "outer and inner," "seen and unseen," as Platonic (cf. Plato, Rep. 589A) or Philonic dualism, in which the immaterial soul is good and the body is evil [1, 18]. Murray J. Harris and Scott J. Hafemann have shown, however, that Paul's anthropology is not Hellenistic dichotomy. It rests on his Adam Christology [4, 17].

The "outer person" is the whole historical human being under the corruptible mortality inherited from the first Adam. The "inner person" is the whole human being who is re-created day by day through the Spirit within the new age inaugurated by the last Adam. This is the "new creation" (kainē ktisis, 5:17) [4, 17]. As Paul's argument in 5:1–5 makes clear, his hope is not the gnostic immortality of a soul freed from the body (disembodied soul). It is the full resurrection of the person, who receives a glorious resurrection body from heaven (resurrection body) [4, 17].

3. Day-by-Day Renewal (anakainoutai) and the Weight of Glory (baros doxēs) through the Means of Grace (media gratiae)

The present passive form in 4:16, "is being renewed day by day" (anakainoutai hēmerai kai hēmerai), shows that the renewal of the inner person is not an automatic miracle. It is a work of grace [1, 18]. In dogmatic terms, this renewal happens through the media gratiae appointed by the Spirit: (1) the pure proclamation and meditation on the gospel word; (2) the visible word of the sacraments, baptism and the Lord's Supper; and (3) personal prayer [8, 18]. As believers have continuing fellowship with the Lord through these means, the Spirit renews the inner person into the image of Christ, even while the outer person is wasting away [8, 18].

In 4:17 Paul uses a grand rhetorical vocabulary to contrast present suffering with the coming glory:

In Hebrew, the word for glory, kāvôd, is etymologically related to the word for "heavy" (kāvēd). Paul's phrase baros doxēs ("weight of glory") plays on this association with the verb ebarēthēmen ("we were burdened beyond measure") from 1:8, where he describes the Asian affliction [1, 18]. Although the historical suffering that the apostle endures through the means of grace may be severe, the coming weight of resurrection glory, "beyond all measure" (kath' hyperbolēn eis hyperbolēn), so far outweighs present affliction that the latter becomes "light" (elaphron) [1, 18].

The gaze fixed on "things unseen" (mē blepomena) in 4:18 is not an immaterial abstraction. It is the eschatological hope of apocalyptic vision, which anticipates the visible completion of God's new heavens and new earth, to be fully revealed at the resurrection [1, 12]. [Proposition 4] is thus established.

V. Objections and Responses

This section states four principal objections raised in the exegetical and dogmatic discussion of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 and responds to each on the basis of the argument above.

1. Objection 1: The Risk that Salvation-History Absorbs the Ordo Salutis (Calvin's First Objection)

  • The objection: Calvin argued that if the illumination of 4:6 is treated only as a cosmic event of new creation, the grace-ordered sequence of the individual sinner's regeneration and inner illumination, effected by the secret inward work of the Spirit (arcana operatio Spiritus Sancti), risks being absorbed into cosmology [8].
  • Response: This study holds that the declaration of light in 4:6 is both a cosmic invasion and a personal work. Its light shines explicitly "in our hearts" (en tais kardiais hēmōn) [4, 8]. The God who commanded light out of darkness at creation uses the outward proclamation of the gospel (illuminatio exterior), and at the same time, by the power of the Spirit, shines his inner illumination (illuminatio interior) into the depraved heart. Conversion and regeneration take place in this way [8, 13]. The apocalyptic cosmology and the ordo salutis of inner illumination are therefore not in conflict. They are integrated within the personal work of the Spirit [8, 13].

2. Objection 2: Weakening of the Doctrine of Sin through a Satanic Determinism (Calvin's Second Objection)

  • The objection: If the spiritual blindness of 4:3–4 is explained only as the cosmic power of "the god of this age," the blindness of unbelievers becomes a passive injury inflicted by Satan. Their total depravity (depravatio totalis) and moral responsibility then appear diminished [8].
  • Response: The exegesis of 4:4 combines Satan's external blinding with the active depravity of humanity (noēmata) [8]. The primary cause of unbelief is human total depravity and moral guilt. Since the fall, people have actively hated divine truth and loved darkness [8]. Satan is called "god of this age" not because of any divine nature, but because sinners worship him as an idol [8, 20]. God also acts in judicial abandonment (derelictio iudicialis), giving sinners over to their corruption. Satan is used as an instrument of this judgment under the absolute sovereignty of God [8]. This exegesis therefore establishes both human moral responsibility and the absolute sovereignty of God [8].

3. Objection 3: Undervaluing the Monotheistic Intent of the Fathers (Calvin's Third Objection)

  • The objection: When the fathers (Tertullian, Chrysostom, Augustine) read "the god of this age" in 4:4 as God, they were protecting the sole sovereignty of God and trinitarian monotheism (Trinitarian Monotheism) against Manichaean dualism. This was a sound doctrinal safeguard [8, 20].
  • Response: The theological concerns and the intention to protect monotheism behind the fathers' reading are entirely legitimate [8, 20]. Grammatically, however, tou aiōnos toutou is a creaturely genitive that modifies ho theos in the sense of "god of this age." It is not a term for God the Father [8, 20]. Even if Satan is identified as "god of this age," he is not a second God equal to the Lord. He is a limited power subordinate to God's hidden decree and permission [8]. Only when Satan is rightly exposed in 4:4 does the apocalyptic triumph of the true Creator, who commands light out of darkness in 4:6, stand out clearly [8, 12].

4. Objection 4: The Limitation of Apostolic Particularity (Stendahl's Objection)

  • The objection: Krister Stendahl argued that the clay vessel and the bearing of the death of Jesus in 4:7–12 should not be generalized to all believers. They should be restricted to Paul's own historical defense of apostolic authority, in the context of his beatings and humiliation [1, 8].
  • Response: Stendahl correctly identifies the immediate rhetorical context. However, to separate this context from a general doctrine of sanctification is an error [1, 8]. As Paul Barnett observes, although 8–15 are apostolic in context, the statement "we do not lose heart" in 16–18 includes the whole community of believers [1, 22]. The apostle's bearing of the dying of Jesus in his body (nekrōsis) is a sanctifying mortificatio that puts to death the sin that remains in believers. It is also a cruciform spirituality (Cruciformity) through which resurrection life (vivificatio) flows to the whole community [8, 16].

VI. Conclusion: Academic Synthesis and Dogmatic Implications

This study has examined the apocalyptic salvation-history and apostolic existence of 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 through first-century historical-grammatical exegesis, Greek syntax, Second Temple Judaism, Roman imperial iconography, the social history of Corinth, and a constructive dialogue with Reformed dogmatics. Its conclusions are as follows.

First, [Proposition 1 established]: 2 Corinthians 4:1–6 is an apocalyptic event of new creation (kainē ktisis) that shatters the false glory of the Roman imperial cult and imperial iconography [6, 7]. The Creator, who commanded light out of the darkness at the beginning, now impresses the true image of God (eikōn tou theou), found in the face of Jesus Christ, on the heart of the spiritually blinded sinner. He does this through the outward proclamation of the gospel and the inner illumination of the Spirit (illuminatio interior) [4, 8, 12].

Second, [Proposition 2 established]: The spiritual veiling caused by "the god of this age" in 4:3–4 is not the independent sovereignty of Satan. It is a moral guilt in which human total depravity (depravatio totalis) combines with Satan's instrumental blinding [8]. This takes place under the absolute sovereignty of God, as a judicial abandonment (derelictio iudicialis), and it confirms trinitarian monotheism [8, 20].

Third, [Proposition 3 established]: The life of bearing the "clay vessels" (ostrakina skeuē) and "the dying of Jesus" (nekrōsis) in 4:7–15 is a counter-rhetoric that dismantles the self-glorification and symbolic capital of Roman patronage [1, 5]. The paradox of the clay vessel makes visible the Incongruity of Grace, which rests on the imputation of Christ's righteousness and forensic justification. Through the sanctifying mortificatio and vivificatio, the community receives resurrection life (zōē) [8, 14, 16].

Fourth, [Proposition 4 established]: The contrast of outer and inner person in 4:16–18 is an apocalyptic anthropology grounded in Adam Christology, not Platonic substance dualism [4, 17]. Believers renew the inner person day by day (anakainoutai) through the media gratiae: the gospel, the sacraments, and prayer [8, 18]. They look past the light affliction of the present and toward the eternal weight of glory (aiōnion baros doxēs) that will be fully revealed in the resurrection, together with the visible new heavens and new earth [1, 8, 18].

In conclusion, 2 Corinthians 4:1–18 speaks to churches that are tempted to a theologia gloriae of worldly credentials and showy glory. It testifies with force that the power of the true new-covenant ministry lies only in the paradox of the cross and the hope of resurrection, both made visible in the existence of the broken clay vessel [1, 5, 8].

Notes for the Editor (not part of the manuscript)

1. Calvin's identity in the objections. The draft attributes the objections in Sections I and V to "Calvin," and the tag "칼빈비평응답" suggests a response to an internal critique. If these are objections raised by the company's agent Calvin, they should be labeled that way. If they are attributed to John Calvin the Reformer, the quotations and page references need to be checked against his commentary and the Institutes. The paper currently does not distinguish the two.

2. Unverified claims in the source. Please verify the following before publication: the statistic that 20 of 31 Corinthian priestly inscriptions concern the imperial cult; the claim that Tertullian, Chrysostom, and Augustine read ho theos in 4:4 as God; the Bruce Lowe (2013) and Paul Barnett quotations; the date of Hafemann's study 서재 자료; his major work on this theme is usually dated 1990); and the date and content of Heilig (2017).

3. Corrections made silently in the English text. The draft's diapjtheiretai is rendered as diaphtheiretai, and the Greek ostrakinois skeuasin is rendered as ostrakinois skeuesin. The stray non-Greek character in Section II.1 has been omitted.

4. Sources section. As instructed, no bibliography was written. The bracketed citation numbers [n] are preserved as in the Korean draft.

> (eis to mē augasai ton phōtismon tou euangeliou tēs doxēs tou Christo, hos estin eikōn tou theou) > "...

> (hoti ho theos ho eipōn; Ek skotous phōs lampsei, hos elampsen en tais kardiais hēmōn pros phōtismon tēs gnōseōs tēs doxēs tou theou en prosōpō Iēsou Christou) > "어두운 데에 빛이 비치라 말씀하셨던 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 얼굴에 있는 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛을 우리 마음에 비추셨느니라."

III.

(Paul and the Power of Grace)에서 고후 4:7의 질그릇 비유가 지닌 은혜론적 파괴력을 입증한다.

  • en panti thlibomenoi all' ou stenochōroumenoi
  • aporoumenoi all' ouk exaporoumenoi
  • diōkomenoi all' ouk enkataleipomenoi
  • kataballomenoi all' ouk apollymenoi

> (Dio ouk enkakoumen, all' ei kai ho exō hēmōn anthrōpos diaphtheiretai, all' ho esō hēmōn anakainoutai hēmerai kai hēmerai) > "그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니 우리의 겉사람은 후패하나 우리의 속은 날로 새롭도다."

(Refutation and Response)

III.

(David E. Garland)]

(Eschatological Dualism)]

1. tò parautika elaphron tēs thlipseōs: "지금을 나타내는 잠시의 경한 환난".

2. kath' hyperbolēn eis hyperbolēn: "극심함에 극심함을 더하여(extreme of extremes)".

3. aiōnion baros doxēs: "영원한 영광의 중한 것/무게".

(Objections and Responses)

III.

III.

Apocalyptic Corporate Solidarity and a Theology of Resurrection (English 2026-11-01)

Second Corinthians 1:1–11 is often read as an autobiographical aside or as a rhetorical move in Paul's dispute with his rivals at Corinth. This article argues that the passage compactly states Paul's soteriology, ecclesiology, and theology of resurrection. Through exegesis of the key Greek constructions ( ta pathēmata tou Christou , apokrima tou thanatou , and the genitive absolute synypourgountōn ) and attention to the social world of Roman patronage and Jewish liturgy, the article develops three theses. First, the Trinitarian comfort of 1:3–7 rests on an apocalyptic corporate solidarity with Christ. Second, the reciprocal structure of grace in 1:4–7 ...
