Letter and Spirit, Veil and Image: Covenant, Redemptive History, and Pneumatological Revelation in 2 Corinthians 3:1–18

A Syntactical Exegesis of Gramma and Pneuma and a First-Century Contextual Study of Transformation into the Image of Christ (eikōn Christou)

I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Theological Questions of 2 Corinthians 3

1. Background and Purpose

Few passages in the Pauline letters bring Old Testament covenant theology, New Testament pneumatological soteriology, and the rhetorical and social world of the first-century Greco-Roman city into closer contact than 2 Corinthians 3:1–18. Paul writes under pressure. The Corinthians want letters of recommendation (systatikai epistolai), and his opponents keep questioning whether he is a legitimate apostle at all. His answer goes well beyond a defense of his personal standing. He rebuilds, at the level of redemptive-historical epochs, the relation between the old covenant of the law (palaia diathēkē) and the new covenant of the gospel (kainē diathēkē). He reads the account of Moses in Exodus 34:29–35 through the apocalyptic traditions of Second Temple Judaism, and on that basis he sets the written code cut into tablets of stone (plax lithinē) against the work of the Spirit written on tablets of fleshly hearts (plax kardias sarkinē), in both redemptive-historical and syntactical terms.

The passage has had a difficult history of reception. From Origen onward it served as a warrant for spiritual and allegorical exegesis, and modern historical criticism has often misread it as an antinomian text. Reformed dogmatics has its own failing here: it has tended to internalize the passage as a timeless norm and to pass over both its first-century rhetorical Sitz im Leben and the epochal transition between covenants that it announces. This study first establishes a sound grammatical-historical exegesis of the whole chapter. It then draws on the first-century culture of recommendation, the patron–client system, and the Second Temple Moses traditions to give an integrated account of two things: the Trinitarian structure of revelation in Reformed dogmatics, and the communal, new-temple character of the believer's sanctification (sanctificatio). By clarifying the redemptive-historical function of the law's external letter (litera), and the way soteriological transformation (metamorphōsis) takes place through the indwelling illumination of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio Spiritus Sancti), I aim to give theological grounding to two doctrines that carry much of the weight of Paul's theology: union with Christ (unio cum Christo) and the new creation (kainē ktisis).

2. The State of the Question

Scholarly debate on 2 Corinthians 3:1–18 runs along three exegetical and theological lines.

The first concerns the hermeneutical and redemptive-historical character of gramma and pneuma (3:6). Patristic exegesis in the Origenist tradition read the pair as a contrast between a literal or historical reading and a spiritual or allegorical one. John Calvin (1546) rejected this and identified the contrast as one between two ministries: the "bare law" (lex nuda), proclaimed outwardly without the grace of the Spirit, and the "living doctrine" (doctrina viva) that breathes life into the heart [1, 2]. Among modern New Testament scholars, Richard B. Hays (1989) and N. T. Wright (2004) also decline to read the verse as a rule for interpreting texts. Joining the covenant-renewal traditions of Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 11 and 36, they read it as a large-scale epochal transition from the old covenant order to the Spirit's ministry in the new covenant, and in doing so they support and extend Calvin's redemptive-historical exegesis in the terms of contemporary biblical scholarship [3, 4].

The second concerns the purpose of Moses' veil (kalymma) and the meaning of telos (3:13). C. K. Barrett (1973) and Colin Kruse (2015), representing the older critical consensus, take telos as temporal end or cessation (termination/cessation) and interpret the veil as a deceptive or protective act: Moses hid from the people the end of a fading, temporary old-covenant splendor on his face [5, 6]. Scott Hafemann (1995) reads it differently. After the golden calf of Exodus 32, the people's hardened state meant that the holy glory of God would bring death upon them, and the veil was a twofold measure of divine mercy and judgment that shielded them from it [7, 8]. Hays and Wright go further and argue that telos, as in Romans 10:4, should be understood as the law's ultimate goal and purpose (goal/purpose), namely Jesus Christ [9, 10]. W. C. van Unnik (1963), tracing the Aramaic idioms gale appin ("uncovering the face") and gale resh ("uncovering the head"), showed that the unveiled face (anakekalymmenō prosōpō) signifies release from shame and grief into true boldness and freedom before God (parrēsia / eleutheria) [11, 12].

The third concerns the Trinitarian and communal-sanctification questions raised by "the Lord is the Spirit" (ho kyrios to pneuma estin, 3:17) and "transformation" (metamorphōsis, 3:18). Against the category mistake of reading the verse as modalism, an identification of the persons of the Son and the Spirit, Calvin argued that "Spirit" here refers to Christ's mediatorial office (officium) and to Christ as "the soul of the law" (anima legis), who gives the law its life, and does not describe his divine essence (essentia) [13, 14]. Scott Hafemann, Paul Barnett, and Anthony C. Thiselton treat "the Lord" (YHWH) of Exodus 34:34 as the subject of a redemptive-historical, pesher-like interpretation and an exegetical gloss: the Lord of Exodus is the one now encountered in the Spirit of the new covenant. On this reading the Trinitarian shape of redemptive history is secured [15, 16]. Wright argues that the participle katoptrizomenoi ("beholding/reflecting") and the verb metamorphoumetha ("we are being transformed") in 3:18 describe a communal and new-temple reality. They do not describe private contemplation. Unveiled believers look on the glory of the Spirit at work in one another's faces and are formed together into the image (eikōn) of Christ [4, 17].

3. Governing Premises and Theses

Drawing together this field of debate and Wright's critical observations, the study sets out three theses on 2 Corinthians 3:1–18, which the body of the paper will defend.

  • Thesis 1: The image of the "letter of Christ" and the gramma/pneuma contrast in 3:1–6 rhetorically overturn the culture of self-commendation sustained by Roman patronage. The contrast is no allegorical hermeneutic dichotomy. It marks an epochal transition in redemptive history: from the Mosaic covenant era of the "bare law" (lex nuda), which condemns because the Spirit's illumination is absent, to the new covenant era in which the living doctrine of the Spirit (doctrina viva) is poured out on the tablets of the heart. (Defended in II.1.)
  • Thesis 2: Moses' veil (kalymma) and the telos of 3:7–16 point neither to a deceptive concealment of fading glory nor to a defect in the law itself. The veil was an act of divine mercy and judgment that protected hardened sinners. The motif functions as a christological and redemptive-historical sign that the law's goal and ultimate purpose (goal) lies in the glory of Jesus Christ and in the boldness (parrēsia) of those whose faces are unveiled. (Defended in II.2.)
  • Thesis 3: The confession "the Lord is the Spirit" (ho kyrios to pneuma estin) and the transformation "from glory to glory" (metamorphōsis) in 3:17–18 rest on Christ's mediatorial office (officium) and his role as "the soul of the law" (anima legis), and do not posit an identity of persons. Believers behold Christ in the mirror of the gospel and at the same time meet the Spirit's work in one another's faces. On the basis of an Adam Christology, they are thereby being restored to the full image of God (imago Dei). This is a communal and new-temple account of sanctification. (Defended in II.3.)

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

The primary exegetical scope is the Greek text of 2 Corinthians 3:1–18 (NA28). The analysis rests on Greek lexicography, syntax, and the historical and social setting of the first century.

The following constructions receive particular attention for their syntax and semantics: systatikōn epistolōn ("letters of recommendation," 3:1); engegrammenē ou melani alla pneumati theou zōntos ("written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God," 3:3); to gar gramma apoktennei to de pneuma zōopoiei ("for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life," 3:6); pros to mē atenisai tous huious Israēl eis to telos tou katargoumenou ("so that the Israelites might not gaze at the end/goal of what was being set aside," 3:13); ho de kyrios to pneuma estin ("now the Lord is the Spirit," 3:17); and tēn autēn eikona metamorphoumetha apo doxēs eis doxan ("we are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory," 3:18). The study also traces the Hebrew–Greek intertextuality of the Septuagint (LXX) of Exodus 34:29–35, Jeremiah 31 (LXX 38), and Ezekiel 11 and 36, and reads these alongside the evidence for Roman patronage (Saller, deSilva, Joubert, Chow) and the Aramaic idioms identified by van Unnik, bringing all of it into a redemptive-historical and dogmatic frame.

II. Exegesis and Dogmatic Synthesis of 2 Corinthians 3:1–18

1. Overturning the Culture of Recommendation: Letter (gramma) and Spirit (pneuma) in Covenantal Perspective (3:1–6)

1.1. Letters of Recommendation, Patronage, and the Spirit's Presence on Tablets of Flesh (3:1–3)

In 3:1 Paul faces a demand that he prove his apostleship by self-commendation or by letters of recommendation (systatikōn epistolōn), and he answers with rhetorical questions: "Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you?"

[Syntactical analysis: 2 Cor 3:3]
phaneroumenoi hoti este epistolē Christou (main clause: supplementary participle)
├─ diakonētheisa hyph' hēmōn (aorist passive participle: ministry entrusted)
 └─ engegrammenē (perfect passive participle)
├─ ou melani alla pneumati theou zōntos (contrast of means)
└─ ouk en plaxin lithinais alla en plaxin kardiais sarkinais (contrast of location)

In the Roman Empire and the wider Greco-Roman Mediterranean, a letter of recommendation (commendatio / systatikē epistolē) did more than vouch for someone's identity. As Andrew E. Arterbury and L. Michael White have shown, it was a standard instrument by which an elite patron transferred his own honor and influence to a client so that the recipient would receive him, an instrument of vertical and asymmetrical reciprocity [18, 19]. Richard P. Saller and John K. Chow have documented how Paul's opponents in Corinth, the "super-apostles," displayed impressive letters from influential figures in Jerusalem as a means of drawing wealthy households and their patronage networks to themselves [20, 21]. Paul, by contrast, refused financial support and kept working with his own hands. By the conventions of ancient patronage this gave offense, the enmity that follows a spurned benefaction, and his opponents used his lack of worldly credentials as a pretext for attacking his apostleship [21, 22].

Paul overturns this culture of recommendation by recasting it in redemptive-historical terms. As Colin Kruse and David A. deSilva emphasize, he refuses a culture of boasting that depends on paper texts from human patrons, and he names God as the one Ultimate Patron and Christ as the Broker of grace [6, 23]. In the metaphor of 3:3, Christ is the letter's Author, Paul is the scribe and agent who takes it down, and the Spirit is the living ink. The Corinthian believers themselves become the "letter of Christ" (epistolē Christou) written on tablets of fleshly hearts [6, 24].

The contrast between "tablets of stone" (en plaxin lithinais) and "tablets of fleshly hearts" (en plaxin kardiais sarkinais) gathers several texts into one allusion: Exodus 31:18, Jeremiah 31:33, Ezekiel 11:19, and Ezekiel 36:26 [3, 25]. The adjective sarkinos carries no negative sense of sinful carnality here. Set against stone, it denotes the soft, living, responsive interior of the human person (fleshy/pliant) [25]. The inauguration of the new covenant, then, is about more than establishing an individual's credentials. It attests a redemptive-historical reality: through the Spirit's work of new creation, the law of God is engraved on the inner tablets of the community and of each believer.

1.2. The Syntax of gramma and pneuma (3:6) and the Covenant Narrative That Divides the Epochs

In 3:6 Paul states that the sufficiency (hikanotēs) of his apostolic ministry comes from God alone: God "has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."

[Syntactical contrast: 2 Cor 3:6]
• ou grammatos alla pneumatos (contrast of genitives qualifying "covenant")
• to gar gramma apoktennei (letter: subject + present active transitive verb + effect of death)
• to de pneuma zōopoiei (Spirit: subject + present active transitive verb + effect of life)

Richard B. Hays and Seyoon Kim have shown that gramma should be rendered "written code" or "script," and not taken as a bare reference to letters of the alphabet or the literal sense [3, 26]. Origen's allegorizing approach, which divided gramma from pneuma as literal exegesis from spiritual or allegorical exegesis, distorted the narrative context of Paul's argument [1, 2, 3].

Wright adds a further caution. Paul's argument should not be reduced to a timeless rule about the subjective manner in which a person receives the law, whether with the Spirit or without. Paul's gramma includes the epochal, redemptive-historical limits of the Mosaic covenant order [3, 4, 26]. The old covenant code written on stone demands holy obedience but does not supply the indwelling power of the Spirit to fulfil it, and so before a sinful Adamic humanity it can only pronounce condemnation and death [3, 26]. Pneuma, by contrast, is God the Holy Spirit himself, poured out in the eschatological new covenant era that the cross and resurrection of Christ opened. He is the power of life who, given to the believer's heart, brings about actual fulfilment of the law's just requirement [3, 4, 26].

1.3. A Reformed Dogmatic Synthesis: The "Bare Law" (lex nuda) and the Historical Economy of the Spirit's Illumination (illuminatio)

In his commentary on 2 Corinthians 3:6 and in the Institutes (I.9.3), John Calvin sets out what Reformed dogmatics has made of the gramma/pneuma contrast [1, 2, 27]. He calls the law that makes only external demands, apart from the grace of Christ and the indwelling work of the Spirit, the "bare law" (lex nuda) [27, 28].

> "When the law is cut off from the grace of Christ, so that it only sounds in the ears and leaves the heart untouched, the letter is dead, and the law of the Lord kills its readers (lex nuda litera est, et quae occidat). But when the letter is effectually engraved on the heart by the Spirit, and when it displays Christ, it becomes the word of life that restores the soul." (John Calvin, Inst. I.9.3 and Comm. 2 Cor. 3:6) [1, 27, 28]

Joined to Wright's account of epochal transition, this dogmatic statement supplies the decisive support for Thesis 1. The letter of the law is not in itself defective, still less profane. In redemptive-historical terms, the Mosaic covenant order remained at the stage of an external code that could not pour out the Spirit's re-creating work on human beings hardened by Adam's sin, and for that reason it operated as the "letter that kills" [3, 26]. When the gospel is proclaimed in the light of Christ's coming and the outpouring of the Spirit, the Spirit engraves the true meaning of the law on the fleshly tablets of the person and brings revelation to completion as "living doctrine" (doctrina viva) and as the ministry of the Spirit (diakonia tou pneumatos) [1, 27].

2. The Asymmetry of Glory and Moses' Veil (kalymma): An Apocalyptic and Redemptive-Historical Exegesis (3:7–16)

2.1. The Temporary Glory of the Old Covenant (to katargoumenon) and the Surpassing Glory of the New (3:7–11)

In 3:7–11 Paul argues from the lesser to the greater (a minori ad maius; in rabbinic terms qal wahomer) to set out the qualitative asymmetry between the glory of the old covenant and that of the new [8, 29].

Point of comparisonOld CovenantNew Covenant
Nature and mediumThe letter (gramma) that kills, engraved on stoneThe life-giving Spirit (pneuma), written on the heart
Character of the ministryMinistry of death; ministry of condemnation (diakonia tēs katakriseōs)Ministry of the Spirit; ministry of righteousness (diakonia tēs dikaiosynēs)
Permanence of the gloryGlory being set aside (to katargoumenon)Glory that remains (to menon)
Degree of the gloryReal splendor, relatively eclipsedIncomparable, surpassing glory (hyperballousa doxa)

Paul does not deny the divine glory that shone on Moses' face in Exodus 34. That ministry came "in glory" (en doxē, 3:7). Its glory, however, was bounded by its epoch, the glory of a ministry that mediated condemnation and death. The clause in 3:10, kai gar ou dedoxastai to dedoxasmenon en toutō tō merei heineken tēs hyperballousēs doxēs ("indeed, what once had glory has come to have no glory in this respect, because of the glory that surpasses it"), describes the relative glory of the old covenant as wholly absorbed and eclipsed by the absolute glory of the new covenant's ministry of righteousness, as a candle loses its brightness when the sun rises. The neuter participle to katargoumenon ("what is being set aside") declares that the system of the written code, having fulfilled its historical task, is being abrogated and superseded before the surpassing glory of the new covenant (hē hyperballousa doxa) [4, 8].

2.2. Second Temple Traditions of Moses' Glorification and the Purpose of the Veil: The Fading Hypothesis, Merciful Protection, and the Christological telos

Verse 13 is the front line of the debate over the veil and the meaning of telos: "not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the end of what was being set aside."

[Syntactical analysis: 2 Cor 3:13]
kai ou kathaper Mōysēs etithei kalymma epi to prosōpon autou (main clause)
└─ pros to mē atenisai tous huious Israēl (purpose clause: "so that ... might not")
└─ eis to telos tou katargoumenou (prepositional phrase of direction + genitive participle)

Second Temple Judaism, in Philo (De Vita Mosis), Josephus, and the Qumran writings, praised the glory Moses received on Sinai as eternal and absolute, a glory of angelic rank. C. K. Barrett and other critics of the older school took telos as temporal end or fading (termination) and read the veil as a deceptive act: Moses hid the decline of his radiance in order to protect his authority [5, 6].

Scott Hafemann answers this deception hypothesis with a careful reconstruction of the redemptive-historical setting of Exodus 32–34 [7, 8]. Through the idolatry of the golden calf, Israel had fallen into the condition of hardened sinners, a "stiff-necked" people [7, 8]. Were the holy God to dwell among such a people, the consuming holiness of his glory would bring immediate judgment and death [7, 8]. Moses' veil, then, concealed no fading splendor. It was a twofold act of divine mercy and judgment, protecting the people from the death that God's glory would otherwise have brought [7, 8].

Hays and Wright go a step further: telos is not a temporal termination but, as in Romans 10:4, the goal or ultimate purpose (goal or purpose) [9, 10]. In the figure of the veil, Moses merges metaphorically with the Torah text itself (metaphorical fusion) [3, 9]. Because of their hardened hearts, the Israelites fixed on the written code and could not see through it to the goal (telos) to which it pointed, the glory of Jesus Christ [9, 10].

2.3. Turning to the Lord (epistrephō) and the Removal of the Veil (periaireitai)

Verse 16, "but whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed," reinterprets Exodus 34:34 ("whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he removed the veil") in redemptive-historical terms.

[Exegetical comparison: LXX Exod 34:34 and 2 Cor 3:16]
• LXX Exod 34:34: hēnika d' an eiseporeueto Mōysēs enanti kyriou ... periēreito to kalymma
• 2 Cor 3:16: hēnika de ean epistrepsē pros kyrion, periaireitai to kalymma

On W. C. van Unnik's analysis of the Semitic idioms, a covered face (kalymma) in ancient Jewish culture signified shame, guilt, mourning, and the servitude of standing under the old covenant's condemnation [11, 12]. The unveiled face (anakekalymmenō prosōpō) corresponds directly to the Aramaic idiom gale appin and denotes openness before God, confidence, and the frank boldness (parrēsia) and freedom (eleutheria) of one who has nothing to hide [11, 12].

Paul widens the subject of Exodus, Mōysēs, to include every believer who turns, and he replaces the verb eiseporeueto ("went in") with epistrepsē ("turns") [10, 15]. Here Thesis 2 receives direct support. The veil was no defect in the law. It was the spiritual blindness lying over the hardened heart of the reader [7, 8]. Whoever turns in conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ (epistrepsē) finds the veil of shame that lay over heart and text entirely removed (periaireitai), and comes before God with boldness (parrēsia) [8, 11, 12].

3. "The Lord Is the Spirit" (ho kyrios to pneuma estin) and Communal, New-Temple Transformation (metamorphōsis) (3:17–18)

3.1. The Trinitarian Exegesis of ho kyrios to pneuma estin (3:17a) as Pesher-like Interpretation

The first half of 3:17, "now the Lord is the Spirit" (ho de kyrios to pneuma estin), is easily misread as modalism, a collapse of the personal distinction between the Son and the Spirit.

[Syntactical analysis: 2 Cor 3:17a]
• ho de kyrios (subject, articular: picks up the YHWH of Exod 34:34)
• to pneuma (predicate, articular)
• estin (copula)

Paul Barnett, Anthony C. Thiselton, and Richard B. Hays have shown that ho kyrios in v. 17 refers to the LORD (YHWH) of LXX Exodus 34:34, which Paul has just cited in v. 16, and that the clause is an exegetical gloss and a pesher-like interpretation [3, 15, 16]. Paul's point is that the same LORD before whom Moses went in under the old covenant is now, in the new covenant age, effectually known in the hearts of believers through the work of the Spirit (Pneuma). The statement asserts an equivalence of redemptive-historical encounter [15, 16].

3.2. Christ as "the Soul of the Law" (anima legis) and the Mediatorial Office (officium Christi)

In his commentary on this verse, Calvin gives this pesher-like reading a dogmatic resolution grounded in the doctrine of Christ's office [13, 14]. "The Lord is the Spirit," he insists, is not a statement defining Christ's divine essence (essentia). It proclaims Christ's mediatorial office (officium Christi) [13, 14, 27].

> "This statement has nothing to do with Christ's nature; it concerns only the explanation of his office (officium). Paul calls Christ the spirit of the law because the law lives and gives life only when Christ animates it. As a body becomes a living man when the soul enters it, and becomes a useless corpse when the soul is withdrawn, so the law without Christ is nothing but a corpse that kills. Christ, therefore, is the soul of the law (anima legis / spiritus legis)." (John Calvin, Comm. 2 Cor. 3:17) [13, 14, 27]

On Calvin's reading, Christ as the soul of the law (anima legis) breathes life into the dead code of the old covenant by the power of the Spirit [13, 14, 28]. Without Christ's mediation and the Spirit, the law is a corpse that condemns. When the Spirit of Christ is breathed into it, the law becomes a true rule of life (regula vitae) that directs the believer's conduct, which is the third use of the law (tertius usus legis) [13, 14, 28].

3.3. The Freedom (eleutheria) of the Unveiled Face and the Boldness (parrēsia) of gale appin: Van Unnik and Hafemann

The second half of 3:17, "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (eleutheria)," does not license antinomian laxity. As van Unnik and Hafemann have shown, this freedom is release from the condemnation of the law, the terror of death, and the servile condition of a face hidden under the veil of shame. It is the status-confidence (parrēsia) expressed in the idiom gale appin: the freedom to speak and act boldly, with face uncovered, before God and before others [7, 8, 11, 12].

[Syntactical and semantic analysis: 2 Cor 3:18]
hēmeis de pantes anakekalymmenō prosōpō ("and we all, with unveiled face": dative of manner)
├─ tēn doxan kyriou katoptrizomenoi (middle participle: beholding/reflecting the glory of the Lord as in a mirror)
└─ tēn autēn eikona metamorphoumetha (main verb: are being transformed into the same image)
└─ apo doxēs eis doxan, kathaper apo kyriou pneumatos ("from glory to glory": source and process)

The middle participle katoptrizomenoi carries two senses at once: "beholding the glory of the Lord as in a mirror" (beholding in a mirror) and "reflecting the glory of the Lord like a mirror" (reflecting as a mirror) [8, 16]. Believers look without fear on the surpassing glory of God reflected in the mirror of the gospel, which is the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor 4:6), and in the same act they become mirrors that reflect that glory into the world [8, 17].

3.4. Metamorphōsis and the Mutual Reflection of Glory Among Believers: Adam Christology and the Restoration of the imago Dei

The present passive metamorphoumetha ("we are being transformed") in 3:18 expresses the nature of progressive sanctification (sanctificatio progressiva). As N. T. Wright has stressed, the verse opens with a plural subject, hēmeis de pantes ("and we all") [4, 17]. Under the old covenant Moses alone removed the veil and met God face to face. In the church, the eschatological temple of the new covenant, all believers stand before one another with unveiled faces [4, 17]. When they meet one another, they behold and reflect, as in a mirror, the glory of God the Holy Spirit at work in one another's lives and characters, and they are being transformed together into the image (eikōn) of Christ [4, 17].

This account of transformation is rooted in the Adam Christology that Scott Hafemann has set out [29, 30]. The first Adam, by his sin, lost the visible and moral glory God had given him and fell into shame, death, and a spiritual nakedness, a state stripped of glory [29, 30]. Jesus Christ, the last Adam, through his obedience and redemptive work fully recovered the original divine glory that Adam had lost [29, 30].

In the Institutes (I.15.4; III.3.9), rejecting Andreas Osiander's doctrine of an essential infusion, Calvin showed that believers are not deified (deificatio) by an infusion of the divine essence. Rather, as they behold Christ with unveiled face and reflect the Lord's glory to one another, they are progressively restored, ontologically and relationally, by the sovereign power of the Spirit (virtus Spiritus), to the image of God (imago Dei: true knowledge, righteousness, and holiness) that was lost in Adam (reformet / instauramur) [27, 31, 32]. With this, Thesis 3 is established.

III. Objections and Responses

Three significant objections to a redemptive-historical and pneumatological reading of 2 Corinthians 3:1–18 have been raised in the history of the church and in modern scholarship. Each is stated and answered below on the basis of the argument of this study.

1. Objection 1: The Allegorical or Hermeneutical Dichotomy Since Origen

  • The objection: Origen and the allegorical interpreters who followed him take "the letter (gramma) kills, but the Spirit (pneuma) gives life" (3:6) as a legitimate rule for reading Scripture. On this view the surface, grammatical sense of the text (the letter) leads the reader into spiritual death, and only a method that extracts the hidden allegorical meaning beyond the letter (the spirit) gives life to the soul [1, 2].
  • Response: On the basis of the exegesis of Calvin and Richard B. Hays, the objection is to be firmly rejected [1, 2, 3].

First, Paul's gramma is not a term for grammatical reading. In the covenantal contrast drawn from Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36, it denotes the system of the written law on tablets of stone, a written code (written code) from which the indwelling work of the Spirit is absent, and with it the era of the old covenant [3, 26]. Second, pneuma is no abstract allegory either. It is God the Holy Spirit himself, who engraves the gospel on the tablets of the believer's heart and gives the power to obey, and it names the gospel ministry of the new covenant [3, 26]. To despise the primary grammatical sense and take refuge in allegory damages the true meaning of Scripture [1, 2]. The text therefore sets out no dichotomy of interpretive techniques. It declares the redemptive-historical boundary between the "bare law" (lex nuda), lacking the Spirit's illumination, and the living doctrine of the Spirit (doctrina viva), which writes the gospel on the heart [1, 27].

2. Objection 2: Barrett's Hypothesis of Deceptive Fading (termination) and the Veil

  • The objection: C. K. Barrett and other critics of the older school take telos in 3:13 as temporal end (termination) and katargeō as the fading of the facial radiance (fading) [5, 6]. They hold that Moses wore the veil for a deceptive and merely human purpose: to conceal the end of a transient old-covenant splendor disappearing from his face, lest the people see it and despise him [5, 6].
  • Response: On the basis of the exegetical work of Scott Hafemann, Richard B. Hays, and N. T. Wright, this reading requires thorough revision [7, 8, 9, 10].

First, in the redemptive-historical setting of Exodus 32–34, the real cause of the veil was not deception on Moses' part but the hardness of the people, who had hardened their hearts through the idolatry of the golden calf (hardened hearts) [7, 8]. Had they faced the glory of the holy God directly, they would have been in the position of sinners liable to immediate judgment and death. The veil was thus a mediatorial act of divine mercy and judgment that protected a hardened people from destruction [7, 8]. Second, telos does not mean the end of a temporal fading. As in Romans 10:4, it refers to Jesus Christ as the law's ultimate goal and purpose (goal/purpose) [9, 10]. Moses' veil was a redemptive-historical sign that the glory of Christ, the true goal of the law, was hidden from hardened readers, and it is wholly removed only when they turn to the Lord [8, 9, 11].

3. Objection 3: Modalist Identification and the Reduction of the Text to a Timeless Manual

  • The objection: Some interpreters appeal to "the Lord is the Spirit" (3:17) to argue for a modalist identification of the risen Christ with the Spirit. Others move in the opposite direction and reduce the redemptive-historical argument of the chapter to a timeless manual for the inner life of the individual, detached from its first-century historical setting [4, 15, 16].
  • Response: The answer draws together Calvin's exegesis of Christ's office and the socio-historical exegesis of Hafemann, Barnett, Thiselton, and Wright [4, 13, 15, 16, 20].

First, ho kyrios in 3:17 is an exegetical, pesher-like reference to the YHWH of Exodus 34:34. It is an exegetical gloss (exegetical gloss) stating that the LORD of the old covenant is effectually encountered, in the new covenant age, in the Spirit [3, 15, 16]. Second, as Calvin established, the statement concerns Christ's mediatorial office (officium Christi) and Christ as "the soul of the law" (anima legis), not his essential deity (essentia) [13, 14, 27]. When Christ, as the soul of the law, breathes life into it by the Spirit, the old code is raised up as a life-giving rule [13, 14]. Third, set against the Roman culture of patronage and the Second Temple traditions glorifying Moses, Paul's declaration reaches past private contemplation. It tears down the worldly culture of boasting and announces a radical communal and new-temple reality: unveiled believers, beholding the glory of the Spirit at work in one another's faces, are being transformed together into the image of Christ [4, 17, 21].

IV. Conclusion: Findings and Dogmatic and Pastoral Implications

1. Summary of Findings

Bringing together the exegesis of the Greek text, the first-century background (Roman patronage and Second Temple Judaism), and the Reformed doctrine of sanctification, this study has set out the redemptive-historical order of the covenants and the Trinitarian structure of revelation in 2 Corinthians 3:1–18, and has defended its three theses.

  • The image of the "letter of Christ" and the gramma/pneuma contrast in 3:1–6 overturn the first-century culture of recommendation. They declare a redemptive-historical transition, not an allegorical hermeneutic: from the old covenant era of the "bare law" (lex nuda), lacking the Spirit's illumination, to the new covenant era in which the living doctrine of the Spirit (doctrina viva) is poured out on the tablets of the heart (Thesis 1).
  • Moses' veil (kalymma) and the telos of 3:7–16 point to an act of divine protection toward hardened sinners and not to a deceptive concealment of fading glory. The law's ultimate goal (goal) lies in the glory of Jesus Christ and in the confident boldness (parrēsia) of those whose faces are unveiled (Thesis 2).
  • "The Lord is the Spirit" and the transformation "from glory to glory" (metamorphōsis) in 3:17–18 rest on Christ's mediatorial office (officium) and his role as "the soul of the law" (anima legis), not on an identity of persons. Believers behold Christ in the mirror of the gospel and at the same time meet the Spirit's work in one another's faces, and on the basis of an Adam Christology they are being restored to the full image of God (imago Dei). Sanctification here is communal and belongs to the new temple (Thesis 3).

2. Dogmatic and Pastoral Implications

The study yields implications in three areas.

The first concerns the doctrine of Scripture and revelation: the inseparability of Word and Spirit. As Calvin warned, a reading of Scripture from which the indwelling illumination of the Spirit (illuminatio) is excluded is nothing more than the "bare law" (lex nuda), which drives human beings to death [1, 27]. Equally to be rejected is the spiritualist venture that leaves the text of Scripture behind in pursuit of subjective visions or immediate revelation [27]. Revelation becomes a ministry of life that renews the person only when God the Holy Spirit works in the written Word, with the Word (cum verbo), and through the Word (per verbum) [27].

The second concerns soteriology and sanctification: the image restored through beholding and mutual reflection. Christian sanctification (sanctificatio) is neither the strained effort of a legal self-sufficiency to keep an external code nor a static contemplation shut away in private. It is rooted in a communal dynamic. Believers keep beholding Jesus Christ, held in the mirror of the gospel, with unveiled face, and they witness and reflect to one another the glory of the Spirit at work in each other's faces [4, 17]. As they behold the Lord's glory together, the image of God (imago Dei) lost in Adam is honorably re-created in each person and in the community, through the Spirit of Christ, the last Adam [17, 29, 31].

The third concerns ecclesiology and pastoral practice: the living letter of Christ and the community of freedom. The identity of the church and of its ministers today is secured neither by worldly indices of power, nor by contrived letters of self-recommendation (systatikē epistolē), nor by honor-and-patronage networks of the Roman imperial kind [18, 21]. The community of believers, redeemed by the blood of Christ and with the gospel engraved on their hearts in the ink of the Spirit, is itself the "living letter of Christ" (epistolē Christou) delivered to the world [6, 24]. The substance of pastoral ministry lies neither in human rhetoric nor in contests of patriarchal power. It lies in the "ministry of the Spirit" (diakonia tou pneumatos), which in the freedom (eleutheria) and boldness (parrēsia) of the Spirit engraves the image of Christ ever more clearly on the lives of believers. To this the present study bears solemn witness [4, 11, 27].

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis

The Glory of New Covenant Ministry and the Transformation of the Text: A Historical-Grammatical and Dogmatic Reading of 2 Corinthians 3:1–18

I. Introduction

1. Background and Aim

Second Corinthians 3:1–18 is the core of Paul's autobiographical defense of his apostleship and his gospel ministry. It is also one of the hardest passages in the New Testament. Here Paul works out, more fully than anywhere else, how the Mosaic (old) covenant relates to the covenant of the Spirit fulfilled in Christ (the new covenant), in both its continuity and its discontinuity [1, 2].

The so-called "false apostles," or "super-apostles" (hyperlian apostoloi), who had entered the Corinthian church kept attacking Paul's apostolic sufficiency (hikanotēs). They held up letters of recommendation (epistolai systatikai) obtained from Jerusalem or other churches, along with their rhetorical skill and the prestige of Jewish tradition [3, 4]. Paul does not answer with a counter-claim to status. He draws together the tradition of Moses' glorified face in Exodus 34, the new covenant promise of Jeremiah 31, and Ezekiel's vision of the "heart of flesh" in chapters 11 and 36. From these texts he builds an exegetical case for what new covenant ministry is and why it is superior [1, 5].

This study rests on a syntactical and lexical analysis of the Greek text of 2 Cor 3:1–18 (NA28). On that basis it reconstructs two settings: the culture of recommendation letters within the patron-client system of first-century Greco-Roman society, and the world of Second Temple Judaism. It then brings the exegesis into conversation with two loci of Reformed dogmatics: the Trinitarian doctrine of Christ's mediatorial office (officium Christi) and the restoration of the image of God (imago Dei) in sanctification. The aim is to give as full an account as possible of what "the glory of new covenant ministry" amounts to, both as biblical teaching and in the history of redemption.

2. The State of the Question

The interpretation of 2 Corinthians 3 has developed along three lines of debate.

The first concerns the "letter that kills" (gramma) and the "Spirit that gives life" (pneuma) in 3:6. From Origen onward, patristic and medieval commentators treated the pair as two hermeneutical techniques set against each other: a literal or historical reading and an allegorical or spiritual one [6]. Modern exegesis and Reformed dogmatics have consistently argued that Paul is not offering an allegorical key. The contrast lies in the history of redemption. On one side is an external written code from which the grace of the gospel and the Spirit are absent. On the other is the work of the Spirit, who re-creates the heart [7, 8].

The second debate concerns the purpose of Moses' veil (kalymma) and the meaning of telos in 3:13. C. K. Barrett and others in the traditional historical-critical line read the veil as a deceptive or protective device. On this view Moses covered his face to keep Israel from seeing the end (telos as termination) of a temporary old covenant glory that was fading from it [9, 10]. Scott Hafemann reinterpreted the veil as an act of mercy. It shielded a people hardened by the golden calf apostasy from being destroyed by God's holy glory [11]. Richard B. Hays and N. T. Wright gave the passage a christological reading. For them telos is the law's ultimate goal or purpose, Jesus Christ, and not its end in time [12, 13].

The third debate concerns "the Lord is the Spirit" (ho de kyrios to pneuma estin, 3:17) and what it says about Christ and the Spirit. Some have taken it to identify Son and Spirit as one person, which amounts to modalism. Against such readings John Calvin argued that the verse speaks of Christ's mediatorial office (officium Christi) and not of his divine essence (essentia). Christ is the "spirit" or "soul of the law" (spiritus/anima legis), the one who gives the law life [14, 15]. Paul Barnett has argued that the verse is a pesher-style exposition of Exodus 34:34 [16].

3. Theses

In view of these debates, and taking up the dogmatic critique raised in review of an earlier draft, this study states and defends three theses.

Thesis 1. The image of a "letter of Christ" in 3:1–3 turns the first-century Greco-Roman culture of commendation and its patronage system on its head. By joining that image to the covenant-renewal tradition of Jer 31:33 and Ezek 36:26, Paul shows that the believers and their community are themselves the evidence of an apostleship given by God. They are a letter written with the ink of the Spirit [1, 5, 8].

Thesis 2. The "letter that kills" (gramma) in 3:6 is no allegorical category. It is the "naked law" (lex nuda), which can only condemn where the grace of Christ and the indwelling Spirit are absent. The telos of 3:13 points to Christ as the true goal of the law. It does not refer to a fading of Moses' radiance that he wished to hide. The ministry of condemnation has been set aside, and in the Spirit the law reaches its completion in the third use of the law (tertius usus legis), the law as a rule of life [7, 11, 14].

Thesis 3. "The Lord is the Spirit" (3:17) does not merge the persons in a modalist sense. It refers to Christ's mediatorial office (officium), in which he is the anima legis who gives the law life. In 3:18, katoptrizomenoi ("beholding as in a mirror") and metamorphoumetha ("we are being transformed") describe the reality of sanctification. As believers contemplate Christ in the mirror of the gospel, the Spirit's power gradually restores in them the image of God (imago Dei) lost in Adam [14, 17, 18].

4. Scope

The study covers the whole of 2 Cor 3:1–18. It concentrates on the syntax of the key Greek terms (epistolē Christou, gramma, pneuma, katargeō, telos, kalymma, katoptrizomenoi, metamorphoumetha) and on the places where Paul's text meets the Septuagint of Exodus 34. Translations of the Greek text are the author's own.

II. The Letter of Recommendation and the Covenant-Renewal Tradition of Ezekiel and Jeremiah (3:1–3)

1. Recommendation Letters and the Subversion of Patronage

In the first-century Greco-Roman Mediterranean world, the letter of recommendation (epistolai systatikai) was a standard form. It vouched for the identity and moral character of a traveler or minister arriving in another place [19, 20]. It was also a central instrument of the patron-client system. The letter transferred the patron's social standing and honor to its bearer, who could then expect hospitality and protection [19, 20].

The "super-apostles" at Corinth attacked Paul's credentials by pointing to impressive letters from influential bodies elsewhere, Jerusalem among them, and to their own eloquence [3, 4]. Paul replies in 3:1 with two questions: "Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation (systatikōn epistolōn) to you or from you?" [21, 22]. As David E. Garland puts it, Paul's apostolic credentials exist "not on paper but in persons" [23, 24].

2. The Letter of Christ and the Ink of the Spirit

In 3:2–3 Paul takes the human patron's letter of reference and reworks it into a metaphor drawn from the history of redemption:

> You are our letter, inscribed on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You make it plain that you are a letter of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets that are hearts of flesh. (2 Cor 3:2–3) [21, 25]

Colin Kruse and Richard B. Hays set out the roles within the metaphor [5, 26, 27]:

  • Christ is the sender and author.
  • Paul is the amanuensis, the minister who writes it down.
  • The ink is "the Spirit of the living God" (pneuma theou zōntos).
  • The surface is the believers' "heart of flesh" (kardia sarkinē), not stone.

The image combines the stone-tablet motif of Exod 24:12 with the new covenant prophecies of Jer 31:33 and Ezek 36:26 [5, 27, 28]. It confirms that the conversion and life of the Corinthian believers are the only sure letter of recommendation for Paul's apostleship, and that God himself issued it [8, 23].

III. The Letter That Kills and the Spirit That Gives Life (3:4–6)

1. Gramma as Written Code, Not Hermeneutical Method

Few sayings in the New Testament have been misread as often as 2 Cor 3:6:

> He has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of letter (gramma) but of Spirit (pneuma); for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Cor 3:6) [21, 29]

Since Origen, much of the church has read the verse as setting literal interpretation against allegorical interpretation. John Calvin and Richard Hays firmly reject that reading [6, 14, 30]. Gramma is not a way of interpreting. It is the "naked law" (lex nuda), the written legal code that makes outward demands and pronounces condemnation where the Spirit does not dwell and the redeeming grace of Christ is absent [7, 14, 30]. The law itself is good (Rom 7:12). But it lays obligations on sinful human beings without giving them the power to keep them, so in the end it pronounces a sentence of death. In this sense it becomes "the letter that kills" [31, 32].

2. The Life of the Spirit and the Third Use of the Law

Pneuma is the fulfilment of the prophecy in Ezekiel 36. It names the supernatural power of the Spirit, who lives in the believer's heart and enables the law's requirements to be kept. It also names the living teaching of the gospel (doctrina viva) [7, 14, 32]. Calvin's dogmatic insight is especially useful here. Christ is the "soul of the law" (anima legis). Through the Spirit's working he gives life to the dead letter [14, 15]. When the condemning code of the old covenant is abolished (katargēsis), then, the law itself is not annulled. In Christ and by the Spirit it is written on the believer's heart and reaches its completion as a holy rule of life (regula vivendi; tertius usus legis), by which God is served with joy [14, 15, 33].

IV. The Septuagint of Exodus 34, the Veil, and the Rhetoric of Telos (3:7–15)

1. The Passing Glory of the Old Covenant and the Surpassing Glory of the New

In 3:7–11 Paul draws on the Septuagint account of Moses' shining face in Exodus 34 to compare the glory of the two covenants [34, 35]. Moses' ministry was a "ministry of death, carved in letters on stone" and a "ministry of condemnation" [21, 35]. Its glory was to katargoumenon, a glory being set aside, and it faded beside the surpassing glory (hē hyperballousa doxa) of the new covenant [34, 35, 36]. A candle loses its light when the sun rises. In the same way, the institutions of the Old Testament gave way in Christ to the eternal new covenant [36, 37].

2. The Purpose of the Veil

On the veil (kalymma) and the telos of 3:13, Barrett and others hold that Moses covered his face to hide the end (termination) of its radiance, which would make the veil an act of deception [9, 38]. Hafemann points to the setting of the veiling, immediately after the golden calf episode of Exodus 32. He argues that the veil was an act of divine mercy and judgment, performed through Moses as mediator. It kept a hard-hearted people from being struck dead by God's holy glory [11, 39].

Hays and Wright take the argument further. They read telos as the law's ultimate goal or purpose, Jesus Christ, and not as its end in time [12, 13, 40]. The law's true goal lay beyond the veil, in Christ. Israel, in its hardness, held fast to the text and remained veiled. The veil is taken away only when one turns to the Lord [12, 40, 41].

V. The Lord, the Spirit, and Transformation into the Image of Christ (3:16–18)

1. Ho de kyrios to pneuma estin (3:17): The Mediatorial Office and the Anima Legis

The first clause of 3:17, "Now the Lord is the Spirit" (ho de kyrios to pneuma estin), is easily misread in a modalist direction [42, 43]. As Paul Barnett and Colin Kruse have shown, however, the clause is Paul's exegetical pesher on "the Lord" (YHWH) of Exod 34:34 [16, 42].

Calvin's commentary confirms that the statement concerns Christ's office as Mediator (officium Christi) and not his essence (essentia) [14, 15, 42]. As the "soul of the law" (anima/spiritus legis), Christ gives the law life through the sovereign power of the Spirit. He frees believers from the terror of condemnation and gives them true spiritual freedom (eleutheria) [14, 15, 44].

2. Beholding in the Mirror of the Gospel and the Restoration of the Image (3:18)

Verse 18 is the high point of the passage:

> And we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed (metamorphoumetha) into the same image (eikōn), from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Cor 3:18) [21, 45]

Two points need careful statement. First, the middle participle katoptrizomenoi means more than "reflecting." It means "beholding as in a mirror," that is, gazing at Christ as the mirror of the gospel shows him [46, 47]. Second, sanctification should not be reduced to the community's members mirroring Christ to one another. With Calvin's Institutes (1.15.4), we should say that the change happens in the believer's heart. As believers contemplate the mirror of the gospel (speculum Evangelii), the sovereign power of the Spirit (virtus Spiritus) gradually re-creates (metamorphoumetha) in them the image of God lost in Adam. That image consists in knowledge, true righteousness, and holiness, and its re-creation is a process of sanctification that changes what believers are [17, 18, 48]. The transformation is the eschatological work of the Spirit, carried forward from glory to glory [45, 46, 49].

VI. Objections and Replies

Three serious objections to these theses need a direct answer.

1. The Allegorical Reading of Letter and Spirit

Objection. Some interpreters in the church's history, following Origen, take 3:6 as a hermeneutical rule. On this view the literal reading of Scripture kills, and only the allegorical reading gives life [6, 30].

Reply. The exegesis of Calvin and Hays gives good grounds for rejecting this reading [6, 14, 30]. Gramma is not a method of interpretation. It is the "naked law" (lex nuda), from which the grace of the Spirit is absent. What kills is the old covenant code that can only pronounce condemnation, and not the wording of the text [7, 14, 30]. The verse is about redemptive-historical power, which the Spirit has and the code lacks. It says nothing about competing interpretive techniques [7, 30].

2. Barrett and the Theory of Deceptive Concealment

Objection. Scholars in the traditional historical-critical line hold that Moses veiled his face to conceal the end of its fading radiance, an act of deceptive disguise [9, 38].

Reply. Hafemann's redemptive-historical analysis of Exodus 32–34 answers this view [11, 39]. The veil was needed because the people's hearts were hardened. It was an act of divine mercy and protection, sparing them the judgment of death that facing the holy glory would have brought [11, 39]. Telos refers to Christ as the ultimate goal (goal) of the law, not to the law's end [12, 40].

3. A Modalist Identification of Christ and the Spirit

Objection. On the strength of 3:17, some reach the modalist conclusion that the risen Christ simply is the Spirit [42, 43].

Reply. The exegesis of Barnett and Calvin fully resolves the difficulty [14, 16, 42]. Kyrios refers to YHWH of Exod 34:34. The verse does not confuse the persons of the Trinity in their essence. It proclaims, as a truth of dogmatics, the mediatorial office (officium) of Christ, who as the "soul of the law" (anima legis) gives the law life [14, 15, 42].

VII. Findings and Implications for Doctrine and Ministry

Many Korean congregations read 2 Cor 3:1–18 in the Maeil Sungkyung daily Bible reading plan. This study has read the passage by combining exegesis of the Greek text, the social history of the first century, and the dogmatic insights of Calvin's Reformed theology. Its findings are as follows.

First, Paul turns the first-century culture of recommendation letters and its patronage system upside down. He shows that the believers and their community are the "letter of Christ" (epistolē Christou), written with the ink of the Spirit [1, 5, 8]. Second, the gramma of 3:6 is the "naked law" (lex nuda). The ministry of condemnation, now set aside, comes to completion through Christ's mediation in the third use of the law (tertius usus legis), which the Spirit writes on the believer's heart [7, 14, 33]. Third, "the Lord is the Spirit" (3:17) refers to Christ's mediatorial office (officium) as the "soul of the law" (anima legis). The beholding and transformation of 3:18 describe the reality of sanctification, which changes believers in their very being: as they contemplate the mirror of the gospel, the power of the Spirit restores the image of God (imago Dei) in them [14, 17, 18].

For churches and pastors today, these findings call for a ministry that does not rest on human eloquence or outward qualifications. Such a ministry is given over to the glory proper to the new covenant: the Spirit dwelling and working in believers and restoring in them the image of Christ.

특히 3:3의 engrammenē ou melani alla pneumati theou zōntos(유묵이 아닌 살아계신 하나님의 영으로 새겨진), 3:6의 to gar gramma apoktennei to de pneuma zōopoiei(의문은 죽이고 영은 살림), 3:13의 pros to mē atenisai tous porous Israēl eis to telos tou katargoumenou(폐하여질 것의 끝/목표를 주목하지 못하게 함), 3:17의 ho de kyrios to pneuma estin(주는 영이심), 3:18의 ten autēn eikona metamorphoumetha apo doxēs eis doxan(동일한 형상으로 영광에서 영광으로 변형됨)의 통사적 구조를 집중 조명한다.

phaneroumenoi hoti este epistolē Christou (주절: 보충 분사 구문)
├─ diakonētheisa hyph' hēmōn (위임된 직분 수동태 분사)
├─ ou melani alla pneumati theou zōntos (수단 부사구 대조)
└─ ouk en plaxin lithinais alla en plaxin kardiais sarkinais (장소 부사구 대조)

• ou grammatos alla pneumatos (소유격 형용사적 대조)
• to gar gramma apoktennei
• to de pneuma zōopoiei

(John Calvin, Inst. I.9.3 & Comm. 2 Cor. 3:6) [1, 16]

kai ou kathaper Mōysēs etithei kalymma epi to prosōpon hautou (주절)
└─ pros to mē atenisai tous porous Israēl
└─ eis to telos tou katargoumenou

• LXX Exod 34:34: hēnika d' an eiseporeuto Mōysēs enanti kyriou... periaireito to kalymma
• 2 Cor 3:16: hēnika d me an epistrepsē pros kyrion, periaireitai to kalymma

3.1. ho kyrios to pneuma estin (3:17a)

• ho de kyrios (주어: 정관사 동반, 출 34:34의 YHWH 인용)
• to pneuma (보어: 정관사 동반)

(John Calvin, Comm. 2 Cor. 3:17) [10, 11]

hēmeis de pantes anakekalymmenō prosōpō (우리는 다 수건을 벗은 얼굴로: 역격 자격 부사구)
├─ tēn doxan kyriou katoptrizomenoi (중동사 분사: 주의 영광을 거울로 바라보며/반사하며)
└─ tēn autēn eikona metamorphoumetha (주동사: 동일한 형상으로 변형되어 가고 있다)
└─ apo doxēs eis doxan, kathaper apo kyriou pneumatos (영광에서 영광으로: 출처와 과정)

그리고 이 변형의 근원은 kathaper apo kyriou pneumatos("곧 주의 영으로 말미암음이니라")로 명시된다.

III. (Objections & Responses)

이 질문에 대해 데이비드 E. 가랜드(David E. Garland)는 C. F. D. 몰(C. F. D. Moule)의 통찰을 인용하며, 바울의 사도적 신임장은 "종이 위가 아니라 사람 안에"(not on paper but in persons) 존재한다고 지적한다[5][6].

(Christus)
(Pneuma)
(Epistolē Christou)

III.

1. to katargoumenon(파하여질 영광) 대 hē hyperballousa doxa(넘치는 영광)

구분 옛 언약 (Ministry of Old Covenant) 새 언약 (Ministry of New Covenant)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
영광 특성 사라질 영광 (to katargoumenon) 영원히 있을 영광 (to menon)

여기서 핵심 분발점은 분사 to katargoumenon(파하여질 것 / 폐해질 것)과 to menon(영원히 남아 있을 것)의 대립이다[21][22].

 N. T. Wright (goal/purpose) (rendered null)

2. katoptrizomenoi(거울로 응시함)와 metamorphoumetha(변화되어 가다)의 종말론적 실재

둘째, 현재 직설법 수동태 동사 metamorphoumetha("변화되어 가다")의 시상(tense-aspect)이다.

VI. (Objections & Responses)

VII.

III.

(Patron-Client System):

III.

Apocalyptic Corporate Solidarity and a Theology of Resurrection (English 2026-11-01)

> 🇰🇷 한국어 원문 (Korean original): https://blog.aipastors.org/2026/10/2026-11-01-2-corinthians-11-111.html Systematic-Theological Exposition Apocalyptic Corporate Solidarity and a Theology of Resurrection against Imperial Jurisdiction: An Integrated Redemptive-Historical and Dogmatic Study of 2 Corinthians 1:1–11 Abstract. Second Corinthians 1:1–11 is often read as an autobiographical aside or as a rhetorical move in Paul's dispute with his rivals at Corinth. This article argues that the passage compactly states Paul's soteriology, ecclesiology, and theology of resurrection. Through exegesis of the key Greek constructions ( ta pathēmata tou Christou , apokrima tou thanatou , and the genitive absolute synypourgountōn ) and attention to the social world of Roman patronage and Jewish liturgy, the article develops three theses. First, the Trinitarian comfort of 1:3–7 rests on an apocalyptic corporate solidarity with Christ. Second, the reciprocal structure of grace in 1:4–7 ...
