Apostolic Sincerity and the Assurance of Salvation: Eilikrineia, Christ as the Divine "Yes and Amen," and the Fourfold Pledge of the Spirit in 2 Corinthians 1:12–22
An Integrated Historical-Social, Trinitarian, and Dogmatic Study
I. Introduction: Apostolic Defense and the Assurance of Salvation
1. Background and Purpose
Second Corinthians 1:12–22 is usually read as a defensive preface. Paul has changed his travel plans (1:15–16), and his opponents in Corinth have charged him with fickleness (elaphria) and with acting from worldly motives (kata sarka). In answer, he affirms his apostolic integrity and the constancy of the gospel [1, 2]. A close reading shows that the passage does more than declare the apostle innocent. It sets out a trinitarian soteriology: the faithfulness of God (pistos ho theos), the fulfillment of the covenant promises in Christ, and the Spirit's juridical sealing (sphragis) and pledge (arrhabōn) of believers [2, 3].
Earlier scholarship has tended to focus either on Paul's personal biography or on the rhetorical techniques of first-century self-defense. This study follows N. T. Wright in taking the social and historical setting seriously. It places the passage within the patronage system and the honor-shame culture of the Greco-Roman world, and it brings this reading into conversation with Reformed trinitarian soteriology [4, 5]. The aim is to show three things. First, Paul's eilikrineia rests on the unmerited grace of God, not on the wisdom of the flesh or on the favor of Corinthian patrons. Second, the promises of the Old Testament find their unambiguous "Yes" in Christ, and the believers' "Amen" responds to that "Yes." Third, the four verbs of divine guarantee in verses 21–22 ground the assurance of salvation and also establish the bond between apostle and church [1, 3, 6, 7].
2. Landscape of the Scholarly Debate
Three lines of debate frame the interpretation of this passage.
First, scholars disagree about the ethical and social character of apostolic sincerity. David E. Garland and William Hendriksen stress that verses 12–14 belong to the letter's opening and that Paul's inner motives are anchored in conscience before God (coram Deo) [2, 8]. L. L. Welborn and other rhetorical critics take a more reductive view. They read Paul's explanation of his itinerary as a rhetorical device, something like an "ersatz oath formula," designed to calm Corinthian suspicion [2, 9].
Second, scholars debate the sociohistorical background. John M. G. Barclay, John K. Chow, Peter Marshall, and Bruce J. Malina analyze the competitive honor culture of Mediterranean cities and the patronage relations that structured it. On their reading, Paul's self-support and the postponed visit appeared to Corinthian elites as shameful, and they were received as a form of "social enmity" that gave his opponents a pretext for attack [5, 10, 11].
Third, scholars discuss the christological fulfillment and the juridical guarantee of the Spirit. N. T. Wright, Paul Barnett, and Se-Yoon Kim argue that the fulfillment of God's promises in Christ is the theological core that objectively secures the apostle's reliability. They also argue that the Spirit's pledge (arrhabōn) and the chiastic structure of verses 21–22 establish a public bond between apostle and church, beyond the private assurance of individual believers [3, 12, 13].
3. Working Propositions
This study argues for three propositions.
- [P1] Apostolic sincerity (eilikrineia) is not a rhetorical trick (kapēleuō) or a form of fleshly wisdom (sophia sarkikē). It is an alternative identity that overturns the worldly system of patronage and honor. It rests on conscience before God and on unmerited grace (charis) [1, 6, 14, 15].
- [P2] The "Yes and Amen" of 1:18–20 names the eschatological completion of God's covenant promises in the obedience of Jesus Christ. It also functions as an apologetic confirmation of the apostle's gospel faithfulness [3, 12, 16].
- [P3] The fourfold guarantee of verses 21–22 (bebaioō, chriō, sphragizō, arrhabōn) is the legal and commercial assurance of the triune God. It secures the believer's assurance of salvation (certitudo salutis) and perseverance. It also constitutes a public and ecclesial reality that binds apostle and congregation together [7, 13, 17].
4. Scope and Methodological Focus
The study covers 2 Corinthians 1:12–22. It gives close attention to the Greek vocabulary: eilikrineia (sincerity), kapēleuō (to peddle or adulterate), pistos ho theos (the faithful God), bebaioō (to establish), chriō (to anoint), sphragizō (to seal), arrhabōn (pledge), and the particles nai ("yes") and amēn ("amen"). It examines their lexical, juridical, and commercial senses and then integrates the results into dogmatic categories [7, 14, 17, 18].
II. Exegesis and Argument: Structure, Sociohistorical Setting, and Trinitarian Soteriology
1. The Ethical and Sociological Basis of Apostolic Sincerity: Eilikrineia and the Subversion of Honor and Patronage (1:12–14)
Paul begins the main body of the letter by claiming: "Our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience" [1]. In the first-century Greco-Roman world, boasting was a currency of honor. Rhetoricians and local elites displayed their status (dignitas), lineage, and influence in a contest for public regard [5, 19]. Paul's boast is of a different kind. It is a confidence that reverses the values of the world and does not rest on human achievement or self-assertion [1, 6]. He says that his conduct has been governed "not by fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God" [1, 8].
In verse 12 Paul uses the word eilikrineia to describe the purity of his ministry [1, 14]. The term is traditionally derived from heilē ("sunlight") and krinō ("to judge"), which would suggest something tested in the light and found without flaw. This etymology is disputed among lexicographers, but the sense of unmixed sincerity is firmly established. BDAG characterizes the word as describing a purity of motive that has no pretense or hidden agenda [14]. In 2:17 Paul sets this quality against kapēleuō, the term for a retailer who waters down wine to make a profit. The image is of commercial adulteration, and Paul applies it to those who trade the word of God for gain [14, 20].
The lexical contrast can be summarized as follows.
- eilikrineia (εἰλικρίνεια): traditionally, purity tested in sunlight, sincerity of motive [1, 14]. Sociologically, it refutes the rhetorical hypocrisy of elites and points to a divine transparency [5, 14]. Theologically, it marks apostolic integrity before God (coram Deo) [2, 15].
- kapēleuō (καπηλεύω): to trade as a huckster and adulterate goods for profit [14, 20]. In the Corinthian setting it describes the mercenary handling of the gospel, which Paul condemns in the false teachers of 2:17 [20].
The social pressure on Paul is clear from the background. Corinth's wealthy patrons offered him material support, which would have made him a client and placed him within their network of obligation and status [10, 21]. Paul refused, and he supported himself by manual labor. When he also changed his travel plans, his refusal to be a client was read as a breach of reciprocity. The patrons took this as a public insult and called Paul unstable and untrustworthy [10, 11].
David A. deSilva and John M. G. Barclay show how Paul answers this charge. He appeals to God's court of reputation, a tribunal that does not depend on the approval of Corinthian elites [6, 15]. The sincerity he claims is more than private piety. It rejects the logic of patronage and rests the apostle's identity on what Barclay calls incongruous grace, a gift that does not match the recipient's rank or merit [6, 15]. By invoking conscience before God, Paul sets aside the human tribunal of reputation [2, 15].
2. The Faithful God and the Eschatological Fulfillment in Christ: The "Yes and Amen" (1:15–20)
Some in Corinth accused Paul of saying "yes, yes" and "no, no" at once (nai nai kai ou ou), which they took as evidence that he was fickle and governed by the flesh [1, 18]. In verse 18 Paul answers with a solemn declaration: "God is faithful" (pistos ho theos). He ties the reliability of his own ministry directly to the unchanging character of God [2, 12].
Verses 19–20 are the theological high point of the passage. Paul says that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom he, Silvanus, and Timothy proclaimed, was not "yes and no." In him there has been only "Yes" (Nai) [1, 18]. The statement in verse 20 that "all the promises of God find their Yes in him" marks the summit of the argument on salvation history [1, 16]. Colin Kruse and James D. G. Dunn observe that the many promises (epangeliai) of the Old Testament, from the seed of the woman in Genesis 3:15 through the Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7:12–13 to the suffering servant of Isaiah 53, are fulfilled in the person and atoning work of Christ [3, 16].
The believer's response follows from the divine "Yes." Because Christ is God's affirmation of the promises, believers answer with an "Amen" in worship and in daily life [12, 18]. J. A. Bengel and the Charis commentary read the verse in the same way. The promises are "yes" on God's side, and they are answered with "amen" on the side of those who believe and confess them [12, 16]. The result is a christological and liturgical circuit. God's faithfulness is affirmed in Christ, and the church returns the affirmation in praise.
Wright's reading also brings out the apologetic force of the argument [2, 12]. The Corinthians accused Paul of changing course, and Paul answers by reminding them that the gospel itself is rooted in the unconditional "Yes" of Christ. His ministry, including the change of plans, is thus shown to share in the constancy of God's own character [2, 12].
The argument can be traced as a sequence. (1) The faithfulness of God (pistos ho theos) grounds the reliability of the message. (2) This faithfulness is realized in the one "Yes" of Christ, which makes the apostolic proclamation objectively trustworthy. (3) The Spirit enables the church to respond with the "Amen" of worship and confession.
3. The Juridical and Communal Guarantee of the Triune Covenant: The Fourfold Pledge (Bebaioō, Chriō, Sphragizō, Arrhabōn) and the Assurance of Salvation (1:21–22)
Having answered the charge of fickleness, Paul turns to the way God holds apostle and congregation in Christ. In verses 21–22 he uses four legal and commercial images [3, 7, 17].
1. Establishing (bebaioō). Here the present participle bebaiōn describes God as the one who confirms and secures. In commercial and legal papyri the verb is a technical term for the validation of a sale or a judicial decision [7, 17]. God establishes believers and the apostle in Christ with a secure legal warrant, so that they are not moved [7, 17].
2. Anointing (chriō). Outside the New Testament, aleiphō was the ordinary word for applying oil in daily life. Chriō is used in the Septuagint as the translation of Hebrew māšaḥ, and it is reserved for the consecration of kings, priests, and prophets to a sacred office [17]. God gives believers a redemptive vocation through the Spirit [13, 17].
3. Sealing (sphragizō). This word belongs to legal and commercial usage, where a seal authenticates a document or marks ownership of goods [7, 17]. God marks his people as his own legal possession, a possession that cannot be taken from him, and he keeps them safe until the last day [7, 17].
4. Pledge (arrhabōn). The word comes from a Semitic root (compare Phoenician ‘ērābôn) and designates the first installment or down payment in a commercial agreement [7, 17]. The Spirit given to believers is the pledge of the full inheritance still to come, in resurrection and in the kingdom of God. It is a guarantee that God will not revoke [7, 13, 17].
Kim Se-Yoon reads verses 21–22 as a chiasm [13]. The four participles and verbs fall into the following pattern.
- A: ho de bebaiōn hēmas syn hymin eis Christon (Now the one who establishes us with you in Christ): juridical confirmation [13].
- B: kai chrisas hēmas theos (and the one who anointed us is God): divine commissioning [13].
- B′: ho kai sphragisamenos hēmas (who also sealed us): divine ownership [13].
- A′: kai dous ton arrhabōna tou pneumatos en tais kardiais hēmōn (and gave the Spirit as a pledge in our hearts): juridical down payment [13].
The outer terms bebaiōn (A) and arrhabōn (A′) frame the passage with the language of legal security. They show that God, through the Spirit, keeps apostle and believers within the sphere of Christ's redemption and guarantees their salvation [13].
Wright is right that these four images do more than secure individual assurance (certitudo salutis). They have a public and ecclesial dimension [3, 7]. When Corinth was divided and opponents were attacking the apostle, the claim that God has given the Spirit as a pledge affirmed that the bond between Paul and the Corinthians, and his apostolic authority, did not depend on fickle human opinion. It rested on God's own legal seal [3, 7, 13].
III. Objections and Replies
1. First Objection: The Reductive Rhetorical Reading and the "Ersatz Oath Formula" (L. L. Welborn and Others)
The objection. L. L. Welborn and some rhetorical critics read Paul's explanation of his travel plans as a defensive rhetoric designed to cover a pastoral failure. On this view, the "Yes and Amen" argument of 1:17–20 borrows God's faithfulness to justify a personal change of plans. It is an "ersatz oath formula" that gives human inconsistency the appearance of doctrine [2, 9].
The reply. This reading reduces Paul's argument to rhetoric. In verse 23 Paul calls God as witness (martys) on his life and says that his reason for not coming to Corinth was "to spare you" (pheidomenos hymōn) [2]. The change of plans was not caprice. It was an act of pastoral mercy, and it gave the church room to repent without facing discipline. It reflects a cruciform spirituality [13, 22]. The apostle's faithfulness is not a self-defense. It is anchored in God's unchanging character (pistos ho theos), and it cannot be reduced to a rhetorical technique [2, 12].
2. Second Objection: Sociological Determinism and the Patronage System (John K. Chow, Peter Marshall, and Others)
The objection. Sociohistorical scholars such as John K. Chow and Peter Marshall analyze the conflict in Corinth through the patronage relations and competitive honor of Greco-Roman society [10, 11]. On this reading, Paul's refusal of patronage and his insistence on self-support, together with the postponed visit, broke the norms of reciprocity and produced resentment. The passage is simply a by-product of that social conflict [10, 11].
The reply. The patronage system and the culture of honor are real and important background for understanding the Corinthian misunderstanding [10]. Paul, however, rejects the courts of reputation that the Corinthians wanted him to satisfy [10, 15]. Gorman and Barclay show that Paul dismantles worldly boasting and sets out a cross-shaped trust that is "not self, but God." He grounds his identity in the incongruous grace of God, which is sola gratia [6, 22]. The passage therefore does more than reflect social conflict. It is a theological statement that overturns the values of the Mediterranean world through the grace and the trinitarian guarantee of God [6, 15].
3. Third Objection: Wright's Critique and the Dogmatic Response
The objection. N. T. Wright has argued that a dogmatic reading, however well structured, must do more justice to the first-century social setting, to the apologetic character of the "Yes and Amen," and to the communal and apostolic dimension of the Spirit's pledge [4].
The reply. This study takes up Wright's critique in full. The argument of Parts II.1–3 gives explicit attention to the clash of patronage and honor, to the apologetic function of "Yes and Amen," and to the chiastic structure and ecclesial function of the fourfold guarantee [7, 10, 12, 13]. At the same time, the historical analysis is not allowed to crowd out the doctrine of God. The social and rhetorical features of the text are placed within the predestinating and soteriological framework in which the triune God preserves believers forever [3, 7, 13]. In this way exegesis and dogmatics are integrated.
IV. Conclusion: Summary and Pastoral and Dogmatic Implications
This study has read 2 Corinthians 1:12–22 through historical-social exegesis and trinitarian dogmatics together. It reaches three main conclusions.
1. Apostolic sincerity and the subversion of worldly grounds of boasting. Paul's sincerity (eilikrineia) is not rhetorical skill or fleshly wisdom. It is an alternative identity, established before God (coram Deo) on the testimony of conscience and on incongruous grace. It overturns the honor and patronage system of the first-century world [1, 6, 14, 15].
2. Christ-centered fulfillment and apologetics. All the covenant promises of the Old Testament find their "Yes" in the atoning obedience of Jesus Christ, without ambiguity. The believers' "Amen" is the liturgical answer to that "Yes," and it grounds the apostle's gospel faithfulness in an apologetic way [3, 12, 16].
3. The fourfold guarantee of the Spirit and trinitarian soteriology. The four legal and commercial images (bebaioō, chriō, sphragizō, arrhabōn) show that God seals his people as his own possession and guarantees their salvation. They also bind apostle and church together in Christ as a public and ecclesial reality [7, 13, 17].
These conclusions speak to churches and ministers who are tempted to measure themselves by worldly success and human reputation. The integrity of a minister is kept only in the consciousness of standing before God (coram Deo) and under his grace. The unity and salvation of the church do not depend on the changing judgments of the world. They rest on the unchanging "Yes" of the triune God and on the Spirit given as the pledge of the inheritance to come [2, 7, 15].

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis
# The Seal of the Spirit and the Yes of Christ: A Historical-Grammatical Exegesis of 2 Corinthians 1:12–22 and a Covenantal Christological Argument ## I. Introduction: Apostolic Self-Defense and the Convergence of Theological Horizons ### 1. Background and Aim Second Corinthians 1:12–22 is a key passage in which Paul answers the charge of vacillation provoked by his changed travel plans (1:15–16). In it he defends his apostolic integrity and the constancy of the gospel he preaches. [1, 2, 6] Earlier scholarship has tended to read the passage either as a biographical account of Paul's conduct or as an example of first-century rhetorical self-defense. This study turns to its dogmatic depth. Paul's apostolic sincerity (*eilikrineia*), I will argue, is more than a device for managing relationships. It rests on a clear conscience before God (*coram Deo*) and on unmerited grace (*charis*). [6, 11] The study has two further aims. It seeks to show that the covenant promises of the Old Testament reach their eschatological completion in Christ. It also seeks to show how the fourfold work of the Spirit (*bebaioō, chriō, sphragizō, arrhabōn*) coheres dogmatically with the believer's assurance of salvation (*certitudo salutis*). [16, 20] ### 2. The Shape of the Scholarly Debate Three questions organize the discussion. The first concerns the character of apostolic sincerity (*eilikrineia*). Garland and others take the word to describe an awareness of living before God, [8, 15] while Welborn and others reduce it to secular rhetoric. [15] This study rejects the reductionist reading. The apostle's ethical integrity, it maintains, is itself a product of divine grace. [6] The second concerns the socio-historical setting. Barclay and Chow read the Corinthian accusations through the categories of patronage and honor. [3, 16] The present study reads the same material as an overturning of secular value systems. [2] The third concerns the structure of Christ as "Yes and Amen." Wright and Barnett argue that Christ is the objective ground on which the covenant promises are fulfilled. [1, 20] This study develops that claim into a federal Christology. ### 3. Thesis Propositions - **[Proposition 1]** Apostolic sincerity (*eilikrineia*) is not a rhetorical maneuver of the kind practiced in secular discourse. It is the fruit of a conscience that stands before God (*coram Deo*) and of unconditional grace (*charis*). [6, 17] - **[Proposition 2]** The "Yes and Amen" of 1:20 proclaims that the covenant promises of the Old Testament are brought to completion in the vicarious obedience of Christ (*Actus Vicarius*). This is an eschatological fulfillment. [16] - **[Proposition 3]** The fourfold guarantee of 1:21–22 is a juridical and existential exercise of sovereignty by the triune God. It is an objective pledge that secures the believer's assurance of salvation and eternal preservation. [20, 21] --- ## II. Body: Structural Exegesis and Dogmatic Argument ### 1. The Ethical and Theological Ground of Apostolic Sincerity: *Eilikrineia* and *Coram Deo* (1:12–14) Against the accusations of the Corinthians, Paul names what his conscience bears witness to as his boast (*kauchēsis*). He locates the ground of that boast in "the grace of God" (*theou chariti*). [6, 14] The key word in verse 12 is *eilikrineia*. The term combines the word for sunlight with the verb "to judge," and it denotes a transparency that can be held up to the full light of the sun and found to contain not a single trace of impurity. [8, 10, 11] As Calvin observes, the word points beyond the tribunal of human reputation toward the absolute integrity required *coram Deo*. [18] This stands in sharp contrast to *kapēleuō*, the term for the peddler who adulterates his wares, which the false teachers are said to practice. [17, 20] Paul's identity as a minister is rooted not in a network of patronage but in a relationship of pure grace established before God. [14, 15] ### 2. The Unique "Yes" of Christ and the Liturgical Response (1:15–20) Paul meets the charge of *elaphria* ("levity") that his change of plans has provoked by declaring, "God is faithful" (*pistos ho theos*). In this way he ties the constancy of his ministry to the character of God. [18] In verses 19–20 the "Yes" (*nai*) in Christ declares that the promises of the Old Testament covenant find their fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. [16] Read in federal-theological terms, this means that the last Adam, as covenant representative, has answered every redemptive purpose of God in a vicarious obedience (*Actus Vicarius*). [15] The "Amen" (*amēn*) of believers cannot be reduced to a spontaneous religious act of human beings. It is a participatory response, brought about by the work of the Spirit within mystical union with Christ. [16] ### 3. The Fourfold Guarantee of the Spirit: Triune Sovereignty and Salvation (1:21–22) In verses 21–22 Paul draws on four juridical terms to assert the certainty of salvation. [16, 21] 1. **Establishing (*bebaioō*).** The term confirms the legal validity of a contract. It signifies that God firmly holds the believer in Christ forever. [16, 20] 2. **Anointing (*chriō*).** The term recalls the Old Testament commissioning of office and, in this context, the conferral of a calling through the Spirit. [16] 3. **Sealing (*sphragizō*).** The word denotes the seal on an official document. It marks the believer as God's possession, which cannot be revoked. [16] 4. **The Spirit given as guarantee (*arrhabōn*).** In commercial exchange the term means a down payment. Here it stands for God's absolute pledge of the resurrection glory that is still to come. [16, 19] This fourfold structure establishes that the salvation of believers rests permanently on the sovereign decree of the triune God and on the objective assurance of the Spirit. [21] --- ## III. Objections and Replies ### 1. Objection: Socio-Historical and Rhetorical Reductionism **Objection.** Critical scholarship treats the passage as a by-product of conflict within a patronage and honor system. It also reduces the argument from the Spirit's guarantee to persuasive rhetoric. [19] **Reply.** This study does not deny the social context. Paul does, however, overturn the tribunal of honor and set forth a grace that answers to no human measure of desert. [15] The guarantee rests on the indwelling work of the Spirit, which exceeds human rhetoric. For that reason it cannot be reduced to a rhetorical device. [19, 21] --- ## IV. Conclusion: Summary and Implications Through a close exegesis of 2 Corinthians 1:12–22, this study has shown that Paul's defense belongs to the horizon of a trinitarian doctrine of redemption. The apostle's integrity rests on his sense of living before God and on grace. Christ is the redemptive completion of every covenant promise. The fourfold guarantee of the Spirit is the objective pledge by which God keeps his people to the end. The text therefore offers the contemporary church a confirmation of God's unchanging grace that stands above human inconstancy. [6, 16, 21]

(Nai kai Amen) (1:15-20)
III.

III.
VII.

III.

III.
