Systematic-Theological Exposition
Solomon's Enthronement and "the Throne of Yahweh": The Theocratic Structure and Christological Fulfillment of 1 Chronicles 29:20–30 in Systematic-Theological and Canonical Perspective
I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Theological Core of 1 Chronicles 29:20–30
1. Background and Purpose
First Chronicles 29:20–30 closes the forty-year reign of David and records the enthronement of his son Solomon, who takes the throne with the full assent of all Israel [1, 2]. On its surface the passage reports a transfer of power and a change of generations within one dynasty. Read within the canon, however, it becomes one of the decisive texts for understanding three matters: the nature of Israel as a theocracy, the shape of the Davidic covenant's fulfillment, and the theological type of the messianic kingdom (Regnum Messianicum) still to come.
This study draws on the critical work of N. T. Wright, whose expertise in first-century Jewish literature sharpens the historical horizon of the text. Earlier readings have sometimes flattened the passage into dogmatic schemes. This study aims to correct that tendency and to restate the theological trajectory of the passage against the background of Second Temple Judaism.
2. The Landscape of the Debate
Three fronts shape the discussion.
The first concerns the character of the throne and of the narrative that describes it. Philip Satterthwaite reads the passage as an idealized retrospect. Bruce Waltke and Raymond Dillard defend it as a model of the vice-regent who represents the throne of Yahweh [2, 3]. This study links that delegated authority (Regnum Vicarium) to the exalted Christology of the New Testament, while keeping the personal hypostases distinct so that the Christological claim is not distorted.
The second concerns the separation and union of cultic and political office. Sara Japhet argues for a strict division between royal and priestly authority. Studies of the Qumran "two messiahs," however, suggest that this very division became the historical matrix of eschatological hope [4, 5]. Drawing on the "order of Melchizedek" in Hebrews, this study argues that the tension is resolved and united in Christ.
The third concerns the historical reliability of the sources. Kenneth Kitchen relates the threefold prophetic sources (Samuel, Nathan, and Gad) to the archival traditions of the ancient Near East and affirms their reality [7].
3. Foundational Premises and Thesis Propositions
- Proposition 1 (Christological exaltation). The "throne of Yahweh" (kissēʾ YHWH) on which Solomon sits typologically foreshadows the session of the God-man Mediator, Jesus Christ, at the right hand of God (Sessio). The text announces more than an agent's office. It publicly proclaims an essential sovereignty.
- Proposition 2 (typological archetype). The division between king and priest in verse 22 is a provisional remedy after the fall. The Melchizedekian Christology of Hebrews 7 shows that this division is restored and united in Christ, who is its archetype.
- Proposition 3 (covenantal immutability). David's prosperous end is not a reward for works. It is evidence of God's immutable decree (Decretum Dei), which keeps sinners to the end, and of the unconditional efficacy of the covenant of grace.
II. Body: Historical-Grammatical Exegesis and Biblical-Theological Development of 1 Chronicles 29:20–30
1. The Single Prostration before Yahweh and the King (v. 20)
Verse 20 describes the climax of the assembly's worship: "they bowed down and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the king" (wayyiqdû wayyištaḥăwû layhwāh wəlammelek) [1, 9]. The syntax is unusual. A single verb of prostration (wayyištaḥăwû) governs both Yahweh and the king, which are joined by the conjunction waw and marked by the preposition lamed.
The construction could be misread as the apotheosis of a king, a feature of pagan monarchy. The Chronicler, however, places it within a framework of exclusive monotheism. It is a public pledge of allegiance to a covenantal representative, through whom the theocratic rule of Yahweh is acknowledged [1, 7]. John Calvin insists that a human king cannot receive divine worship. Yet he also notes that the honor given to a king, as an ordinance of God (ordinatio Dei), ultimately extends the worship owed to God himself [17].
2. The Second Anointing (šēnît) and the Theology of Diarchy (v. 22b)
The simultaneous anointing of Solomon and Zadok in verse 22b is more than a coronation ceremony. The adverb "second" (šēnît) signals that this was a formal, assembly-wide coronation, distinct from the emergency measure at the Gihon spring [1, 11]. As Wright observes, the event established an institutional diarchy, a settled division of royal and priestly office [2, 12, 14].
For the post-exilic community of Yehud, the pattern of Zerubbabel and Joshua taught that royal and priestly authority must complement and harmonize with each other [4, 8, 23]. This arrangement supported the redemptive-historical narrative until the offices were united in one person in Christ, who is a priest after the order of Melchizedek.
3. "The Throne of Yahweh" (v. 23) and Christological Exaltation
The seat Solomon occupies is not an ordinary royal throne. It is the "throne of Yahweh" (kissēʾ YHWH) [5, 7]. The formula shows that Solomon, as the first successor in the Davidic line, represents the rule of Yahweh as a "shadowy mediator" [15]. The formula points beyond Solomon's personal virtues or failings.
The letter to the Hebrews argues that this typological reality reached its full form in the ascension of Jesus Christ and his session at the right hand of God (Sessio ad dexteram Dei) [11, 24, 25]. Christ is not a created vice-regent. As true God and true man (Vere Deus, Vere Homo), he has taken up and fulfilled the eternal office of priest-king [27].
III. Objections and Replies: Dogmatic Defense against Source-Critical and Traditio-Historical Arguments
1. Objection 1: The Tension between Historical Fact and Theological Idealization
Satterthwaite objects that the bloody political purges recorded in 1 Kings 1–2 disappear entirely from 1 Chronicles 29. He calls this a theological manipulation of history [4, 9].
Reply. This objection misreads the character of Chronicles as canonical literature. Unlike the Deuteronomistic History, which narrates the exile as judgment, Chronicles pursues a historiography of restoration and healing, written to rebuild a shaken identity [3, 29]. The selection of material reflects a canonical principle of editing. It is a form of creative historical interpretation, not a distortion of history. The threefold prophetic sources in verse 29 (the words of Samuel, Nathan, and Gad) also show that the book rests on inspired prophetic records [7, 30].
2. Objection 2: The Dogmatic Anachronism of the Threefold Office (Munus Triplex)
A critic has argued that the draft, by reading the anointing of Solomon and Zadok as a type of Christ's threefold office, imposes a dogmatic anachronism that ignores the Old Testament rules for separate offices.
Reply. The division of offices was a legal provision given to fallen humanity, a means of instruction (Usus Paedagogicus). It was not the original pattern of the eternal redemptive plan. This study accepts that the Qumran "two messiahs" reflect the transitional longing produced by that division. It then argues from Hebrews 7 that the Melchizedekian archetype shows how the division is transcended and united in Christ. This gives the argument its dogmatic coherence [45, 46].
IV. Conclusion
This study has examined how the theological affirmation of "the throne of Yahweh" in 1 Chronicles 29:20–30 is central to the Old Testament theocracy. It has also traced how that affirmation, through the tensions of the Second Temple sources and the longings of tradition-history, is brought to complete unity in the exalted Christology of Jesus Christ. The earthly Solomon was an incomplete shadow. Christ, the eternal priest and king, is the archetypal reality to which that shadow pointed, and he reigns over all things. The church today belongs to the eternal theocratic kingdom that Christ rules by his Spirit and Word. It is called to bear witness to the justice and righteousness of that kingdom while looking beyond the political circumstances of this world to the throne of the true Ruler [28].

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis
The Throne of YHWH (kissēʾ YHWH) and the Eschatological Reappropriation of Theocratic Representation: A Historical-Grammatical Study of 1 Chronicles 29:20–30 and Its Trajectory into Second Temple Judaism and New Testament Christology
Abstract. First Chronicles 29:20–30 closes the account of David's forty-year reign with a liturgical assembly, a second anointing of Solomon and Zadok, Solomon's enthronement on "the throne of YHWH," and a notice that three prophetic writers recorded David's acts. This article reads the passage through its Hebrew syntax, its divergences from the parallel texts in Kings, and the Second Temple and New Testament materials that it anticipates. It advances four claims. First, "the throne of YHWH" confines the human king to a theocratic vice-regency, and in the New Testament this pattern is fulfilled in the exalted Christ, the one person of the God-man. Second, the joint anointing of king and priest reflects a post-exilic diarchy, which the Qumran community projected into a pair of messiahs and which finds its completion in the single Melchizedekian priest-king. Third, the single act of prostration before "YHWH and the king" expresses subordinate representation and not the worship of a ruler. Fourth, David's peaceful death and the threefold prophetic record rest on the unconditional character of the covenant and complete the threefold office of Christ.
I. Introduction: Theocratic Horizons at the End of the Davidic Dynasty
1. Background and Aim
First Chronicles 29:20–30 is the narrative close of David's reign and one of the clearest places in the Old Testament where theocracy is stated in cultic and covenantal language. The passage moves through David's gifts for the temple and his hymn of thanks (vv. 10–19), the assembly's worship (vv. 20–21), the anointing of Solomon and Zadok (v. 22), Solomon's enthronement (vv. 23–25), and David's death together with the threefold prophetic citation (vv. 26–30) [1, 2]. The Chronicler wrote for a community that lived as a small province under Persian rule in Yehud, after the collapse of the Davidic monarchy. His question was where the enduring covenant with David and the true rule of God were grounded when no Davidic king sat on the throne [3, 4].
Historical-critical scholarship has often treated the passage in one of two ways. Some read it as a post-event idealization that hides the court intrigue of 1 Kings 1–2, including Adonijah's revolt, the interventions of Bathsheba and Nathan, and Solomon's bloody purge of rivals. Others reduce it to a moral tale of retribution [7, 8]. This study resists both reductions. It attends to the Hebrew syntax and cultic vocabulary of the passage, to the diarchal conditions of post-exilic Yehud, and to the continuities with Second Temple texts such as 1 Enoch and the Dead Sea Scrolls [4, 9, 10].
The study also takes up the dogmatic caution of John Calvin. A purely functional model of the king as "vice-regent" carries a risk of subordinationism. For that reason the Solomon–Zadok pairing is read here within a Chalcedonian frame, and the Melchizedekian priest-king is presented as its fulfillment [11, 12, 13]. The aim is to hold together historical precision, canonical reading, and dogmatic soundness.
2. The State of the Question
Four debates frame the current discussion.
The first concerns the nature of the "throne of YHWH" and the genre of the passage. Philip Satterthwaite and other historical critics argue that the Chronicler deliberately removed the political conflicts and Solomon's executions of Joab, Shimei, and Abiathar, thereby damaging historical accuracy in the service of a theological utopia [7, 8]. Bruce Waltke and Raymond Dillard respond that the Chronicler does not erase history but reinterprets it. He redefines the monarchy as a delegated, theocratic vice-regency that stands under the throne of YHWH and dissolves the private authority of the human king [2, 14, 15]. This study supports their reading and extends it by arguing that the Chronicler's textual changes are oriented toward the eschatological hope of a community that looks for the universal rule of YHWH while lacking a king [4, 15].
The second debate concerns the division of cultic and political offices, the diarchy. Sara Japhet and D. F. O'Kennedy argue that Chronicles reflects the leadership shift of post-exilic Yehud, in which royal and priestly leaders share authority on roughly equal footing [4, 16]. Scholars of the Qumran texts (1QS, 1QSa, CD) argue that this arrangement became the matrix of a double messianism, a royal messiah and an Aaronic messiah, in the end-time [10, 17]. This study accepts the historical reality of the division but reads it, from a dogmatic and typological perspective, as a provisional shadow. Hebrews proclaims that the Christ, according to the order of Melchizedek before Levi, unites kingship and priesthood in a single person [11, 13, 18].
The third debate concerns the grammar of the prostration in verse 20. Religion-historical scholars see in the single act of bowing before "YHWH and the king" a residue of ruler cult. Richard Bauckham and Calvin argue that the king's authority is wholly subordinate to God and that the act expresses civil homage [12, 19]. This study tests that claim against Semitic syntax and against Jewish traditions of heavenly agency and affirms the boundaries of strict monotheism.
The fourth debate concerns the historical reliability of the prophetic sources and the canonical completion of the threefold office (munus triplex). K. A. Kitchen and Gary Knoppers have shown from ancient Near Eastern archival practice that the three prophets named in verse 29 can plausibly be read as contemporary recorders of the Davidic court [1, 20]. M. J. Selman and Ming Him Ko have shown that these citations function to establish the prophetic office as a canonical authority that oversees both king and priest [6, 21]. This study adds that the prophetic citation thereby sets the outline of Christ's threefold office [6, 11].
3. Thesis and Propositions
The argument is organized around four propositions.
- [Proposition 1: Theocratic and Chalcedonian Exalted Christology.] The phrase "the throne of YHWH" (kissēʾ YHWH, 1 Chr 29:23) dissolves the autonomous royal authority of a human king and limits Israel's king to the status of a theocratic vice-regent. This pattern passes through the enthronement traditions of the Son of Man in Second Temple apocalyptic literature and is fulfilled in the New Testament's accounts of the resurrection and exaltation of Christ (Heb 1; Eph 1:20–23). That fulfillment, however, does not stop at subordinate representation. It is the enthronement of the eternal Son, who is true God and true man in one person by the hypostatic union, as the Lord of all. (Section II.1 and II.3)
- [Proposition 2: Dual Office and Melchizedekian Typology.] The joint anointing of king and high priest in 1 Chr 29:22b retroactively legitimates the post-exilic diarchy of Yehud. That diarchy produced the Qumran expectation of a double messiah, an incomplete hope. In the New Testament, the hope is fulfilled in one eternal priest-king according to the order of Melchizedek. (Section II.2)
- [Proposition 3: Monotheistic Rhetoric.] The single prostration before "YHWH and the king" (wayyištaḥăwû layhwāh wəlammelek, 1 Chr 29:20) is grounded not in ruler cult but in an explicit covenantal representation formula. It affirms an ordered hierarchy between the latria due to the Creator and the civil honor due to a theocratic ruler. (Section II.1)
- [Proposition 4: Canon, the Threefold Office, and the Covenant of Grace.] The peaceful end of David (v. 28) and the threefold prophetic citation (vv. 29–30) rest on the unconditional permanence of the Davidic covenant (decretum Dei), not on immediate reward. The prophetic office, which judges and guides both king and priest by the word, completes the redemptive-historical foundation of Christ's threefold office. (Section II.4)
4. Scope and Method
The base text is the Masoretic Text of 1 Chronicles 29:20–30 as preserved in Codex Leningradensis. The study compares it with the Septuagint and with Qumran fragments where relevant. Four lexical and syntactic features receive particular attention: the coordinated prepositional phrase with lamed in verse 20; the adverb šēnît ("a second time") in combination with the double anointing in verse 22; the construct phrase "throne of YHWH" in verse 23; and the blessing formula and prophetic citation of verses 28–29.
II. Exegesis and Biblical-Theological Development
1. "Bowing Before YHWH and the King" (v. 20): Syntax and Theocratic Representation
Verse 20 describes the climax of the assembly's cultic act:
> "Then David said to all the assembly, 'Now bless the LORD your God.' And all the assembly blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves before the LORD and the king."
The syntactic problem is this. Two cultic verbs, qādaḏ (to bow the head) and the Hishtaphel of šāḥāh (to prostrate oneself), are followed by a single prepositional phrase with lamed. That phrase joins YHWH and the king with the conjunction waw, so that both stand under one verb of worship [5]. Grammatically, one act of worship is directed to both the transcendent Creator and a creaturely ruler. A reader who sees a common object can easily conclude that the king is being honored with the honor due to God. The Septuagint translators seem aware of the difficulty and render it literally: kai kampsantes ta gonata prosekynēsan tō kyriō kai tō basilei ("bending the knees, they worshiped the Lord and the king") [5].
Within the Hebrew Bible, however, the construction does not deify the king. Calvin, in the Institutes (1.12.3), reminds readers that a human ruler is a mortal who "breathes through the nostrils," and is therefore owed no divine worship in himself [12, 22]. Calvin distinguishes two kinds of honor. The first is religious worship (latria or cultus divinus), which is owed to God alone. The second is civil honor (civilis reverentia), which is rendered to a lawful ruler within the order God has established [12, 23]. When the people bow to the king, they do not worship a man. They submit humbly to the holy ordinance of God and the authority that stands behind the king's office [12, 24].
Sara Japhet and Hermas Asumbi observe that the Chronicler places the "whole assembly" (qəhal yiśrāʾēl) at the center of the cultic act [4, 25]. Where the Deuteronomistic history focuses on the decisions of a monarch, Chronicles shows the entire congregation giving voluntary offerings (nədābâ) and pledging covenant loyalty to David and Solomon as representatives of God [25, 26]. In the light of Bauckham's account of Jewish strict monotheism, layhwāh marks the source of all worship, while wəlammelek marks public recognition of the king as vicarius Dei, the one who makes God's covenantal rule visible on earth [19]. The text does not set divine sovereignty beside royal authority as two parallel powers. It integrates them into one order in which the king is wholly subordinate to the rule of God.
2. The Second Anointing: Post-Exilic Diarchy and Melchizedekian Completion (v. 22b)
The second half of verse 22 contains the most distinctive institutional detail in the account of Solomon's accession:
> "They made Solomon son of David king a second time and anointed him, for the LORD, as ruler, and Zadok as priest."
The first word of interest is the adverb šēnît, "a second time." In 1 Kings 1, Solomon's first anointing at Gihon is an emergency measure taken in haste under the pressure of Adonijah's bid for the throne [5]. The second anointing in Chronicles is a public and national inauguration, a covenantal ceremony attended by the elders and tribal leaders of all Israel [4, 5].
The second point concerns the object of the verb māšaḥ. The king (lənāgîd) and the priest (ləkōhēn) are both anointed in a single coordinated construction. O'Kennedy argues that this coordination reflects the leadership situation of the Persian-period province of Yehud, where the older pattern of royal domination over the priesthood gave way to a model in which royal and priestly figures stood on equal footing [16]. After the exile, Zerubbabel as civil governor and Joshua as high priest shared authority, a configuration that appears in Zechariah 4:14 and 6:13 [16]. The Chronicler, drawing on the historical removal of Abiathar and the establishment of the Zadokite priesthood (1 Kgs 2:27, 35), projects this dual leadership back into the Davidic age. The result is an ideal theocratic model in which the Davidic dynasty and the Zadokite priesthood exist together under equal divine anointing [4, 16].
This structure of office passed into Qumran eschatology and was developed there. The Community Rule (1QS IX, 10–11) names the saviors of the last days as "the messiahs of Aaron and Israel" (məšîḥê ʾahărōn wəyiśrāʾēl), in the plural [10]. The Rule of the Congregation (1QSa II, 11–21) describes an end-time messianic banquet in which the priestly messiah of Aaron, as head of the whole congregation, first blesses the bread and wine, and only then does the messiah of Israel reach out to the bread [10]. The Florilegium (4Q174, Frags. 1–2 I, 10–13) interprets 2 Samuel 7:14 as referring to the "Branch of David" who will arise together with the "Interpreter of the Law" [27].
Calvin's dogmatic caution, however, applies here with full force. The Qumran double messiah should not be taken as the normative basis of New Testament Christology. The strict separation of royal and priestly functions in the Old Testament, which the story of Uzziah illustrates (2 Chr 26:16–21), was a provisional pedagogical measure within the Mosaic law. It guarded against the presumption of sinful human beings [11, 28]. By contrast, Melchizedek in Genesis 14 and the oath of Psalm 110:4 point to an eternal archetype that precedes the Levitical order [11, 13]. Hebrews 5–7 argues that Jesus Christ, though descended from Judah and not from Levi, is "a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." In his one person he breaks the institutional division of the Old Testament and perfectly unites royal and priestly office [11, 13, 18]. The partnership of Solomon and Zadok in 1 Chronicles 29:22b therefore functions as a redemptive-historical shadow (umbra) that points toward this eternal reality (veritas) [11, 13].
3. Enthronement on "the Throne of YHWH" (v. 23) and the Foundations of Chalcedonian Exalted Christology
Verse 23 is the theological center of the Chronicler's account and the most direct canonical link to New Testament Christology:
> "Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king in place of his father David. He prospered, and all Israel obeyed him."
The Masoretic reading is more striking than the usual idiomatic translations suggest:
> וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב שְׁ֠לֹמֹה עַל־כִּסֵּ֨א יְהוָ֧ה לְמֶ֛לֶךְ תַּֽחַת דָּוִ֥יד אָבִ֖יו > (wayyēšeb šəlōmōh ʿal-kissēʾ YHWH ləmelek taḥat dāwîd ʾābîw) > "And Solomon sat upon the throne of YHWH as king in place of David his father."
The parallel passages in Kings consistently speak of "the throne of David" (1 Kgs 2:12) or "the throne of Israel" (1 Kgs 2:4; 8:20, 25; 9:5; 10:9). Chronicles changes these to "the throne of YHWH" [4, 15, 29]. The Chronicler also revises the Queen of Sheba's speech. In 2 Chronicles 9:8, the king is said to have been set "on his throne" as king for YHWH your God, where the pronoun refers to God. In 1 Chronicles 17:14, Nathan's oracle reads "my house and my kingdom" (bəbêtî ûbəmalkûtî) in place of "your house and your kingdom" (2 Sam 7:16) [2, 14, 15]. Japhet reads these revisions as a deliberate theological move that makes the kingship belong to YHWH rather than to the dynasty [4]. Waltke and Dillard argue that for the Chronicler the Davidic kingdom is the earthly embodiment of the kingdom of YHWH itself (2 Chr 13:8) [2, 14, 15]. Solomon sits on a throne that belongs to the universal ruler, not on a throne owned by the house of David [4, 29]. The king is therefore a theocratic vice-regent who applies the Torah of YHWH, not an absolute monarch [2, 30]. G. K. Beale shows that the vice-regency of Genesis 1:28, first given to Adam over creation, is restored redemptive-historically in the Davidic covenant [30, 31].
When the earthly monarchy ended in Babylonian exile, the motif of the throne of YHWH passed into the heavenly throne traditions of Second Temple apocalyptic literature. The Similitudes of 1 Enoch (45:3; 51:3; 61:8; 62:2–5; 69:27) present the Lord of Spirits as seating the Chosen One and the Son of Man on the throne of glory and entrusting to him the eschatological judging office [9, 32]. The Melchizedek text from Qumran (11Q13 II, 9–13) interprets Psalm 82:1 and portrays Melchizedek as the heavenly figure (ʾĕlōhîm) who judges the forces of Belial in the heavenly court [10, 33].
Here Calvin's dogmatic critique must be built into the argument. Solomon, as a creature, externally exercised a vice-regency over the throne of God, and he was a finite human being. The New Testament, however, proclaims the resurrection and ascension of Jesus with reference to Psalm 110:1, as the sessio ad dexteram Dei (Acts 2:33–36; Eph 1:20–23; Phil 2:9–11; Heb 1:8, 13; Rev 3:21). This is not a simple extension of the functional vice-regency of Solomon [2, 11, 12].
The Chalcedonian confession (451) holds that Christ is vere Deus, vere homo and homoousios with the Father [11]. In his commentaries on Ephesians 1:20 and Matthew 26:64, Calvin argues that "sitting at the right hand" is a figurative way of saying that the Father has taken the human nature of the Son into participation in divine glory and in the exercise of universal rule. It does not mean that Christ is confined to a particular place [12, 34]. Calvin also holds that because the right hand of God fills heaven and earth, the kingdom and power of Christ reach everywhere [34]. The exalted Christology of the New Testament is therefore not a subordinationist extension of Solomon's delegated authority. It is the proclamation that the eternal Son of God, in the human nature he has assumed, has been declared Lord of all and exercises a spiritual and universal rule (regnum spirituale) [2, 11, 12].
4. David's Peaceful End (vv. 28–30) and the Threefold Prophetic Record: Unconditional Covenant and the Completion of the Threefold Office
The Chronicler closes the David narrative with a solemn note:
> "Then he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor. And his son Solomon reigned in his place. The events of King David, from first to last, are written in the record of Samuel the seer, the record of Nathan the prophet, and the record of Gad the seer."
Verse 28 describes David's death "in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor" (bəśêbâ ṭôbâ śəbaʿ yāmîm ʿōšer wəkābôd). The Chronicler's theology of immediate retribution has often been read against this statement [15, 35]. Saul's disobedience and his consultation of a medium bring immediate defeat and death (1 Chr 10:13–14), while David, who devoted himself wholeheartedly to preparing for the temple, is blessed with a full and honorable old age [26, 35, 36].
Calvin's caution applies again. David's peaceful end should not be reduced to a reward within a covenant of works. David was also a sinner, guilty of adultery with Bathsheba and of the census [8, 37]. Yet the Chronicler's reason for portraying David's reign as ending in glory is not human merit. According to 2 Chronicles 21:7, YHWH was not willing to destroy the house of David, "because of the covenant he had made with David and his promise to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever" [15]. David's peaceful end is the fruit of the unchanging decree of God (decretum Dei) and of the unconditional faithfulness of the covenant of grace (foedus gratiae), which holds a sinner to the end [11, 15].
The threefold prophetic record of verse 29 is the peak of documentary credibility and canonical theology: the words of Samuel the seer (dibrê šəmûʾēl hārōʾeh), the words of Nathan the prophet (dibrê nātān hannābîʾ), and the words of Gad the seer (dibrê gād haḥōzeh) [6, 20]. Kitchen compares the record-keeping practices of Near Eastern courts and argues that these three prophets can plausibly be read as contemporary recorders of the reign of David [20]. Selman and Ko show that each of these three prophets stood at a decisive redemptive-historical point in David's reign [6, 21]. Samuel, the seer, anointed David and set the course of his rise (1 Chr 10–11) [6]. Nathan, the prophet, delivered the oracle of the eternal Davidic covenant and the temple commission (1 Chr 17) [6]. Gad, the seer, after David's sin of the census, directed him to repent and fixed the site of the future temple at the threshing floor of Ornan (1 Chr 21) [6, 37].
These prophetic citations show that the Davidic kingdom and its worship did not rest on the private decision of the king. They rested on divinely inspired prophetic revelation. The prophetic word held both king and priest under judgment and correction [6, 11, 21]. Schniedewind observes that the post-exilic period was the time in which prophecy moved from oral proclamation to written and canonical transmission and interpretation [21]. By naming the three prophetic records at the close of the Davidic narrative, the Chronicler affirmed that the legitimacy of the monarchy and of the post-exilic cult lies in the word of God [6, 21].
The whole passage (vv. 20–30) thus sketches a canonical blueprint for the threefold office (munus triplex) that is completed in the Mediator. The king seated on the throne of YHWH (v. 23) represents the royal office (munus regium). The priestly anointing of Zadok (v. 22) prefigures the priestly office (munus sacerdotale). The prophetic citations (v. 29) show the prophetic office (munus propheticum), which proclaims the word of God without addition or subtraction and seals the history. These three offices, united in one person, perfectly prefigure the work of the coming Messiah [6, 11, 12, 13].
III. Objections and Replies
This section considers four objections that may be raised against the exegetical and biblical-theological model developed above.
Objection 1: Conflict with the Deuteronomistic History (1 Kings 1–2) and the Charge of "Theological Manipulation"
The objection. Philip Satterthwaite and other critics of source history argue that the Chronicler deleted from 1 Kings 1–2 the revolt of Adonijah, the collusion of Joab and Abiathar, David's frailty, and Solomon's bloody purge. On this view, the peaceful succession and unanimous acclaim of 1 Chronicles 29 are a post-event distortion that serves a post-exilic priestly ideology and paints Solomon as blameless [7, 8].
Reply. This objection misreads the literary genre and the purpose (Sitz im Leben) of Chronicles. It rests on a narrow positivism [15, 38]. Kim and Dillard argue convincingly that the Chronicler did not deny the existence of Kings and did not set out to falsify history [15, 38]. The first readers of Chronicles already knew the book of Kings well [15]. Kings was written to explain why the nation fell into exile and so interprets the monarchy from the standpoint of judgment. Chronicles was written for returnees who wondered whether they remained God's covenant people after the temple and monarchy had been destroyed. It therefore preaches hope and restoration [3, 38]. The omission of the personal failings of David and Solomon does not make them moral heroes. It keeps the focus on their identity as bearers of the Davidic covenant and as builders of the temple [38]. Kitchen notes that David did in fact establish a coregency with Solomon in his old age, which gave the succession a public and institutional character [20]. The Chronicler removes the drama of court intrigue in order to bring to light the sovereign choice of God (bāḥar) and the theocratic reality of the throne of YHWH. The result is not a falsification of history but a "creative historical interpretation" that makes visible the redemptive purpose of God at work behind events [2, 38].
Objection 2: Reducing "the Throne of YHWH" to Court Rhetoric and the Anachronism of Christological Reading
The objection. Some Old Testament scholars hold that "the throne of YHWH" is an inflated expression of court language common in feudal societies of the ancient Near East and nothing more. Reading it alongside Second Temple apocalyptic or the exalted Christology of the New Testament is, in this view, an anachronistic projection of later Christian doctrine onto an older text.
Reply. This objection overlooks the progressive development of covenant theology within the canon and the precise literary changes the Chronicler introduced. He did not simply borrow an idiom. He systematically reworked his parallel source. "The throne of Israel" in 1 Kings 10:9 becomes "his throne" in 2 Chronicles 9:8, "the throne of YHWH" in 1 Chronicles 29:23, and "the kingdom of YHWH" in 1 Chronicles 17:14 and 28:5 and 2 Chronicles 13:8 [4, 15, 29]. Beale argues that the claim that Solomon sat on the throne of YHWH announces that the vice-regency given to Adam in Genesis 1:28 has been re-established in the Davidic covenant [30, 31]. After the Israelite monarchy fell, Jewish readers themselves understood the promises of this text as awaiting a fulfillment in a coming messiah. The Florilegium of Qumran and the Son of Man traditions of 1 Enoch make this clear [9, 27]. When the New Testament authors confess the resurrection and ascension of Jesus as enthronement at the right hand of God, they do not distort the Old Testament text. They identify the fulfillment that the text itself already contains [2, 12, 14].
Objection 3: Ruler Cult as the Residue of a Pagan Practice
The objection. From the perspective of the history of religions, the collective bowing before God and the king in 1 Chronicles 29:20 may be a residue of divine kingship in Egypt or Canaan, or of the absolute obedience paid to the Persian Shah, absorbed uncritically into early Israelite monarchy.
Reply. This hypothesis contradicts the most basic foundation of the Old Testament, strict monotheism, and the Deuteronomic law of kingship (Deut 17:14–20) [39]. In Deuteronomy 17, the king of Israel is not a deified figure. Unlike the monarchs of the surrounding nations, he must keep a copy of the law beside him and read it all his life so that his heart will not be lifted up above his brothers. He is the primus inter pares [39]. The king is included with YHWH in the act of bowing in Chronicles not because he shares in the divine nature, but because of the holy delegation of God's rule that stands behind his person [12, 22]. Bauckham shows that Jewish strict monotheism maintains an absolute categorical distinction between Creator and creature [19]. The Chronicler does not elevate the king to divinity. He places all royal power under the throne of YHWH and so blocks any absolutization of secular power [4, 12]. The bowing in verse 20 is therefore not an act of deification but a confession that the sovereignty of YHWH is being exercised on earth through the anointed servant [12, 22].
Objection 4: Nomism and the Erosion of Grace by Immediate Retribution
The objection. If the Chronicler's theology of immediate retribution is taken too seriously, David's peaceful end (v. 28) becomes a reward for moral merit. That would reduce the covenant of grace to a legalistic system of recompense, undermining the Reformation doctrine of justification by faith and the unconditional covenant.
Reply. This objection overlooks the twofold structure of Chronicles, which has a conditional historical horizon and an unconditional redemptive-historical horizon [15]. Dillard explains in his commentary on 2 Chronicles 21:7 that the Chronicler applies the principle of immediate punishment to the sins of individual kings such as Jehoram and Ahaz, but he grounds the refusal to destroy the whole dynasty in God's unconditional promise to David that a lamp would always remain [15]. Immediate retribution is a pedagogical instrument of covenant discipline that calls the people of God in history to holy obedience. The deeper driving force of redemptive history is the eternal decree of God (decretum Dei) [11, 15]. David's peaceful death is not a reward for flawless conduct. It is the final triumph of God's prior grace and covenant faithfulness (fides Dei), which restored David through repentance after Bathsheba and the census and led him to prepare the site of the temple [11, 15, 38].
IV. Conclusion
This study has read 1 Chronicles 29:20–30 through historical-grammatical exegesis and biblical-theological reflection, and has taken up Calvin's dogmatic caution. Its conclusions are as follows.
First, the Chronicler's concept of "the throne of YHWH" (kissēʾ YHWH) is a theocratic affirmation that dissolves the absolute power of the human king. Solomon received not the private power of a dynasty but the delegated rule of the kingdom of YHWH [2, 4]. For a post-exilic community with no political power, this claim anchored hope in the sovereignty of God and in the permanence of the Davidic covenant even in a period without a ruling king [3, 15]. In the New Testament, this theocratic throne is fulfilled in the exaltation of the risen and ascended Jesus Christ, who sits at the right hand of God and reigns as Lord of all in the hypostatic union of his person [2, 11, 12].
Second, the joint anointing of king and high priest (v. 22b) grounds the post-exilic diarchy of Yehud in a theocratic framework and retroactively legitimates it in the Davidic age [4, 16]. This dual office passed into the Qumran hope of "the messiahs of Aaron and Israel," but that hope was a provisional shadow under the Mosaic law [10, 11]. The New Testament shows Christ as the eternal high priest according to the order of Melchizedek, who breaks through the limits of the Aaronic order and unites in one person the priestly atonement and the royal rule [11, 13, 18].
Third, David's peaceful death (v. 28) and the threefold prophetic record (vv. 29–30) affirm the unconditionality of the covenant of grace and complete the canonical foundation of the threefold office (munus triplex) [6, 11, 20]. David's peaceful end was not a human achievement but the triumph of the unchanging covenant faithfulness of God. The fact that his reign was sealed by the records of three prophets confirms that the theocratic kingdom stood under the prophetic office, which corrects king and priest by the word of God [6, 11, 15].
The close of 1 Chronicles 29 is therefore not an elegy for a king who has passed from the historical stage. It is a hymn of praise to YHWH, the eternal God of the temple and the true ruler of history [5, 25]. Across the centuries it invites the reader to look to Jesus Christ, who sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high, who has put all things under his feet (Heb 1:13), who has obtained eternal redemption by his own blood once for all, and who is the eternal high priest, King of kings, and the true Word of God [2, 11, 13, 18].

Sitz im Leben)
III.

- 『에녹 1서』(1 Enoch 45:3; 51:3; 61:8; 62:2–5; 69:27)의 비유서(Similitudes)는 '영령의 주(Lord of Spirits)'께서 종말론적 대리 통치자인 '택하신 자(the Chosen One)'이자 '인자(Son of Man)'를 "자신의 영광의 보좌(the throne of glory / כסא כבוד)"에 앉히시는 장면을 묘사합니다 [19, 20].
그러나 키친은 고대 근동의 왕실 문서고 전통(예: 헷 족속의 아눌라쉬 서판, 앗수르 왕실 편찬 문서, 이집트 신전 서고 기록)을 실증적으로 비교하며 다음과 같이 반박합니다: > "Finally, prophets not only spoke but they began to write documents, keep records, and write books... Early on Samuel set down a record of the rules of kingship for Saul and Israel, depositing it 'before YHWH' (1 Sam. 10:25)... Later he may have left some account of David's early life (1 Chron. 29:29a)... For record of David's reign, Nathan the prophet and Gad the seer might be given credit (29:29b, c)... Other than traditional nineteenth-century prejudice, there is no warrant to dismiss these notices." [7]
III. (Objections and Responses)

III.
