Systematic-Theological Exposition

The Divine Footstool and the Throne of YHWH: Temple Presence, Theocratic Sonship, and the Consummation of Covenantal Obedience in 1 Chronicles 28:1–10

Abstract. This essay reads 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 as a programmatic text for the Chronicler's theology of temple, kingship, and covenant. Historical-critical readings have often treated David's assembly as ideological embellishment. Against them, the essay argues that the passage holds together divine transcendence and covenantal condescension, theocratic kingship under divine sovereignty, and the demand for wholehearted obedience within an unconditional covenant. The argument proceeds through the Hebrew syntax of the chapter, its Septuagintal and Qumranic reception, and its trajectory through Psalm 110:1, the adoption formula, and the New Testament. The essay concludes that the Chronicler's temple reaches its fulfillment in the active obedience of Jesus Christ, the true son of David.

I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Dogmatic Center of David's Charge to Build the Temple

1. Background and Purpose

In 1 Chronicles 28:1–10, David, near the end of his life, summons the political, military, and religious leaders of all Israel to Jerusalem and publicly charges his son Solomon with the building of the temple. The scene marks a turning point in the redemptive-historical structure of the Chronicler's account. The parallel narrative in 1 Kings 1–2 concentrates on court intrigue and the politically motivated executions that accompany the succession. The Chronicler removes most of these traces of conflict. He recasts the scene as a drama of divine election (bāḥar) and theocratic commissioning, with Solomon designated as the builder of the sanctuary.

Historical-critical scholarship has frequently read this reconstruction as an ideological idealization by a postexilic Second Temple elite that wished to legitimate its privileges and cultic authority by projecting them back onto the Davidic past. Such a deflationary reading, however, overlooks what the text actually holds together: divine transcendence and covenantal descent, the organic relation between earthly kingship and theocratic rule, and the nature of the total obedience required under the covenant of grace. This essay examines the Hebrew syntax and literary setting of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10. Taking seriously the historical-grammatical criticism of N. T. Wright, it argues that the temple is presented as a "resting place" for the footstool of God, that the Davidic-Solomonic kingship is framed as the throne of the kingdom of YHWH, and that the requirement of an undivided heart is brought to completion in Christ's own obedience. The aim is to show how these themes unfold dogmatically: the manner in which God is present in the temple, the christological pattern of divine sonship, and the way in which the knowledge of God and the conditional language of covenant are fulfilled in the obedience of the Redeemer.

2. The Map of the Scholarly Debate

Interpretation of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 has developed along three main lines.

The first concerns the relation between a royal, centralized building narrative and the theocratic cooperation of the whole congregation (qahal YHWH). First Kings presents Solomon as completing the temple through royal resources and centralized authority (1 Kgs 9:1). Sara Japhet and H. G. M. Williamson have argued that the Chronicler redefines the construction as a national undertaking that presupposes the voluntary participation and theocratic consensus of "the whole assembly of Israel" named in verse 1 [1, 2]. Gary N. Knoppers and K. A. Kitchen have further shown that the David's gathering of leaders and the arrangement of offices in 1 Chronicles 23–28 establish durable national and cultic institutions that continued to serve across the Second Temple period [3, 4]. This essay accepts these structural observations. It argues, however, that the participation of the congregation is more than a social consensus. It rests on a covenantal solidarity that anticipates the priesthood of all the people in the kingdom of God.

The second line concerns the reasons David is barred from building the temple and the redemptive-historical meaning of Solomon's divine election (bāḥar). Roddy Braun has shown that the Chronicler deliberately revises the rest theology of 2 Samuel 7. He removes the notion of rest from David's reign and transfers true rest and divine election to Solomon, "the man of rest" (ʾîš mənûḥāh), in contrast to David, the man of war who shed blood (ʾîš milḥāmôṯ) [5]. Building on the creation-rest-covenant model of W. J. Dumbrell and Graeme Goldsworthy [6, 7], this essay argues that David's wars were a stage in the redemptive conquest of hostile powers. The temple, however, must represent the holy shalom that God establishes, so it had to be entrusted to the man of rest.

The third line concerns the tension between the unconditional Davidic covenant and the sternly conditional language of obedience. Martin J. Selman and Jože Krašovec read the warning of 28:8–9, "if you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever," as leaving the eternity of the Davidic covenant intact. On their reading, the warning points to the historical and personal responsibility that each generation must bear within a foundation of transcendent grace [8, 9]. Raymond B. Dillard likewise confirms the immutability of the unconditional covenant through the preservation of "the lamp of David" in 2 Chronicles 21:7 [10]. This essay argues that the tension is resolved dogmatically only in the historical and covenantal figure of Jesus Christ, who, as the true son of David, brings the conditional demand to completion through his perfect active obedience.

3. Thesis Statements

The argument rests on three propositions.

  • Thesis 1 (theology proper and the doctrine of presence). The image of the "footstool of God" in 1 Chronicles 28:2 responds to the crisis of a Second Temple without the ark. By defining the temple as a resting place (bêṯ mənûḥāh), the text holds together the infinite transcendence of God and a real presence grounded in covenantal condescension (condescensio). The image reaches its completion in Psalm 110:1, where the risen and exalted Christ rules universally and subdues his enemies.
  • Thesis 2 (christology and theocratic sonship). The phrase "the throne of the kingdom of YHWH" (kissēʾ malkûṯ YHWH) and the divine adoption formula addressed to Solomon (baharti vo li leben) pass through the Septuagint and the messianic reception attested at Qumran (4Q174). They find their fulfillment in the eternal and natural sonship of Christ (filiatio naturalis), in his incarnate mediatorial kingship, and in the adoptive sonship (adoptio) that the New Testament church receives through him.
  • Thesis 3 (soteriology and epistemology). The call to "know the God of your father" (da'at) and to serve him with "a whole heart" (lēḇ šālēm) demands more than intellectual assent. It requires total personal union with God. The conditional warning functions, within the unconditional covenant of grace, as a means of perseverance (media perseverantiae). Its ultimate fulfillment, however, lies in the obedience of Christ, who in Gethsemane and on the cross submitted with a whole heart to the Father.

4. Scope and Exegetical Focus

This study takes the Masoretic text of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 (BHS) as its exegetical base and compares it with the Septuagint (LXX). It attends to the following: the list of assembled leaders and the theocratic character of verse 1; the triple formula "house of rest," "ark," and "footstool" in verse 2; the significance of "man of war" in verse 3; the five occurrences of the verb bāḥar in verses 4–6; the triple genitive construction kissēʾ malkûṯ YHWH in verse 5; and the antithetical conditional structure of verse 9. The analysis uses linguistic and dogmatic lenses to trace how these elements together shape the chapter's theology.

II. The Footstool Image and the Theology of Holy Rest

1. Redefining the Ark: Arklessness and Real Presence in the Second Temple

In 1 Chronicles 28:2, David rises and addresses the assembly with a statement of the temple's essential purpose:

> "Hear me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of YHWH, the footstool of our God, and I made preparations for building."

Syntactically, bêṯ mənûḥāh is a construct chain in which the masculine noun bayit governs the feminine noun mənûḥāh. The chain serves as the direct object of the infinitive libnôṯ, "to build" [11, 12]. The following prepositional phrase, laʾărôn bərît-YHWH, and the triple construct wəlahădōm raḡlê ʾĕlōhênû are joined by the conjunction waw and stand in apposition to the "house of rest." Together they specify the holy status of the ark [11, 12].

As Sara Japhet has observed, the Chronicler's identification of the ark as "the footstool of our God" represents a deliberate refinement and innovation within ancient Zion theology [13]. In Psalm 132:7, the sanctuary or the mountain of Zion as a whole is called God's footstool. In 1 Chronicles 28:2, by contrast, the ark itself is the footstool, and the temple is distinguished as the "house of rest" where that footstool rests [13, 14].

Wright's historical criticism asks what the first readers faced, and the answer clarifies the passage. For Jews who returned from Babylonian exile to the Second Temple, the most troubling fact was that the ark no longer existed in the Holy of Holies [13, 15]. It was lost when Solomon's temple was destroyed, and the inner sanctuary of the rebuilt temple under Zerubbabel contained only a bare rock surface. In this setting, to redefine the ark as a footstool was a historical comfort. It told a people bound to the material furnishings of the first temple that the sanctuary was not God's eternal dwelling. God sits on the heavenly throne, and the earthly ark is at most the small footstool that bears his feet [13].

The footstool image thus achieves a dogmatic fusion of the absolute transcendence of God (transcendentia) and his covenantal immanence (immanentia) [13]. In the iconography of ancient Near Eastern temples and palaces, a footstool was placed beneath the seat of the king. Those who prostrated themselves before the throne saw only the footstool, yet the footstool confirmed the reality of the enthroned king [13]. Even when the ark could not be seen, the glorious rule of YHWH enthroned in heaven, and his real presence (praesentia realis) among his covenant people, was not withdrawn. God meets his people personally in the sanctuary through a gracious descent (condescensio) by which he adjusts his infinity to the creaturely order [13].

2. The Warrior David and the Man of Rest: The Redemptive-Historical Order of Shalom

In 1 Chronicles 28:3, David explains why he may not build the temple:

> "But God said to me, 'You are a man of war and have shed blood; you shall not build a house for my name.'"

The shedding of much blood does not indict David's moral character or name him a murderer. The Chronicler evaluates David's wars as holy wars, undertaken to subdue powers that opposed the redemptive rule of YHWH [5, 6].

Roddy Braun has shown that the Chronicler revised the notion of "rest" (mənûḥāh) from 2 Samuel 7. He removed from 1 Chronicles 17:1 the statement that the Lord "gave rest" to David (cf. 2 Sam 7:1) and moved the full rest needed for temple building to the reign of Solomon, "the man of rest" (ʾîš mənûḥāh) [5].

As W. J. Dumbrell argues, the temple is a holy dwelling in which the rest order of creation is realized on the plane of history at the completion of redemption [6]. The tabernacle in the wilderness was a portable sanctuary that carried the dynamics of wandering and struggle. Jerusalem's temple, by contrast, marks the moment when the occupation of Canaan was complete and the rule of God was established free from external threat. It is an "eternal house of rest" [6, 16]. Wars and bloodshed were the necessary work of subduing hostile powers, but the holy essence the temple had to express was not violence. It was holy shalom and reconciliation. For this reason, the temple could not be built by the warrior David. It had to be built by Solomon, whose reign was the peace God had given on every side [5, 6].

3. Psalm 110:1 and the Christological Transition from Static Rest to Eschatological Exaltation

The footstool image in 1 Chronicles 28:2 undergoes a decisive semantic shift in Psalm 110:1, the messianic psalm of the Old Testament:

> "The LORD says to my lord: 'Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.'" (Ps 110:1, hădōm ləraglêkā)

In 1 Chronicles 28:2 the footstool signifies the enduring rest of the ark in its dwelling. In Psalm 110:1 it becomes the place of judicial subjection and eschatological victory, where every hostile power bows before the messianic king [17, 18].

The Old Testament footstool tradition became central to the apostolic proclamation of the universal lordship of the risen and exalted Jesus Christ:

1. Acts 2:34–35 (Peter's Pentecost sermon). Robert F. O'Toole has shown that Peter, pointing out that David's tomb remains, proclaims that only Jesus Christ, raised and seated at the right hand of God, is the eternal son of David who makes all enemies his footstool in accordance with Psalm 110:1 [19, 20].

2. 1 Corinthians 15:25–27 (Paul's eschatological triumph). As Herman Bavinck emphasizes, Christ's session at the right hand rests on his perfect obedience and his exaltation to supreme authority. His rule continues until the last enemy, death, is placed under his feet [17, 21].

3. Hebrews 1:13. The text affirms that the authority to make enemies a footstool, a power granted to no angel, belongs to the Son of God alone.

The temple, which in 1 Chronicles 28:2 is God's footstool, therefore exceeds the limits of a building made by human hands. It is fulfilled as a cosmic reality in the person and work of Jesus Christ. He disarmed the power of death on the cross, rose and ascended, and subjects all things to himself [6, 17].

III. Divine Election (Bāḥar), the Throne of YHWH, and Covenantal Sonship

1. The Concentration of the Verb Bāḥar and the Telescoping Progression of Election

In 1 Chronicles 28:4–6, the most prominent theological verb is bāḥar, "to choose." It appears five times in this short passage and compresses the selective movement of redemptive history into a single sequence [5, 8, 12]:

[Twelve tribes of Israel] ──(elect: bāḥar)──> [Tribe of Judah] (v. 4)
 │
 └──(elect: bāḥar)──> [House of Jesse] (v. 4)
 │
 └──(elect: bāḥar / delight: rāṣāh)──> [David] (v. 4)
 │
 └──(elect: bāḥar)──> [Solomon] (vv. 5–6)

Syntactically, bāḥar takes the preposition bə- when it governs its object, and the sense is "to select from among" [12]. In verse 4, it combines with the preposition lə- in the complement, bāḥar … lĕnāgîd, "chose … to be ruler." This pattern expresses the conferral of an office.

According to Roddy Braun and Martin Selman, Solomon is the only king in the historical books of the Old Testament, after David, whose accession is explicitly described with the theological term bāḥar for divine choice [5, 8]. This progressive selection neutralizes both the principle of primogeniture and the political intrigue of the court (the rebellion of Adonijah in 1 Kings 1–2). It witnesses to the absolute grace of God's decree (decretum Dei) behind the succession [5, 8, 11].

2. The Throne of the Kingdom of YHWH and Its Political-Theological Force

In 1 Chronicles 28:5, the Chronicler states a central principle of Old Testament political theology:

> "Of all my sons—for YHWH has given me many sons—he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of YHWH over Israel."

The triple construct kissēʾ malkûṯ YHWH (throne, kingship, YHWH) declares that David's throne belongs not to a royal household but to "the kingdom of YHWH" [11, 12]. As Japhet notes, the explicit concept "kingdom/kingship of YHWH" (malkût YHWH) is most clearly formulated in the Chronicler's work within the literary history of the Old Testament [22]. The king of Israel is therefore not an absolute monarch. He is a theocratic regent who exercises authority delegated from the sovereignty of the heavenly throne [8, 11].

This royal theology had explosive political implications in the Jewish world of the first century. The confession that God alone is the true king gave a basis for spiritual resistance against the imperial cult of Rome and the injustice of the Herodian regime. The "kingdom of God" that Jesus proclaimed was not an inward speculation. It announced that the universal rule of YHWH, anticipated in 1 Chronicles 28:5, had broken into history [7, 8]. Jesus did not rule as worldly monarchs do. He overturned the way of power on the cross of Rome, where the inscription read "King of the Jews," and by shedding his atoning blood he established the everlasting kingdom of God [7, 23].

3. The Transmission of the Covenantal Adoption Formula to the Septuagint and Its Christological Completion

In 1 Chronicles 28:6, the Chronicler reshapes the adoption formula of Nathan's oracle (2 Sam 7:14) into a new grammatical pattern:

> "For I have chosen him to be a son to me, and I will be a father to him."

In 2 Samuel 7:14 the usual formula is "I will be his father, and he will be my son." In 1 Chronicles 28:6, the verb of election, bāḥar, is moved to the front, producing baharti vo li leben ("I have chosen him for myself as a son") [11, 24].

The Septuagint renders the Hebrew preposition lə- with Greek eis and an accusative noun, fixing the sense of destination:

This Septuagintal construction was received in the Second Temple period, including at Qumran (4QFlorilegium, 4Q174), as a messianic type of the eschatological king. It is linked directly to the New Testament use of the same formula in Hebrews 1:5, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son" [20].

At this point the dogmatic distinction must be drawn with care to guard against adoptionism. Christ is not an adopted son in time (filius adoptivus). He is the eternal and only-begotten Son, of one essence with the Father (filius Dei naturalis). The covenantal sonship given to Solomon foreshadows not the ontological sonship of Christ but his economic and messianic office, namely, his reign on the throne of David as the incarnate Messiah [6, 21]. The privilege of sonship, fulfilled in Christ, is extended to all New Testament believers through the Spirit of adoption, as 2 Corinthians 6:18 witnesses: "I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters" [6, 25].

IV. The Structure of "Knowledge of God" (Cognitio Dei) and the Completion of Covenantal Obedience

1. Knowledge (Da'at) and the Undivided Heart (Lēḇ Šālēm): Total Personal Faith and the Renewal of the Spirit

In 1 Chronicles 28:9a, David commands Solomon to fix his inner life before he undertakes the physical work of building:

> "And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and a willing mind, for YHWH searches every heart and understands every intention of the thoughts."

The imperative daʿ (from yāḏaʿ, "to know") does not refer to speculative information. It describes an experiential, covenantal knowledge in which a person is known by God and submits to him with the whole self [11, 12]. This knowledge must issue in service (wəʿobdēhû, "and serve him"). The text names two inward dispositions that this service requires:

  • bəlēḇ šālēm ("with a whole heart"): an undivided, integral heart, not split between rival loyalties [11, 12, 26].
  • ûḇənepeš ḥăp̄ēṣāh ("and with a willing mind"): a voluntary, joyful desire, not coerced obedience [11, 12, 26].

As John Calvin argues in the Institutes (1.2.1), the true knowledge of God that Scripture teaches (cognitio Dei) is not cold intellectual assent. It is bound up with piety (pietas), the reverence and love for God that marks a believer [Institutes 1.2.1]. Fallen human beings, however, cannot produce an undivided heart on their own. The integrity David demands exposes total depravity. It points forward to the work of the Spirit promised in the new covenant (Ezek 36:26; Jer 31:33): the removal of the heart of stone and the gift of a heart of flesh, the effectual renewal of regeneration (regeneratio) [6, 27]. The demand thus marks a redemptive-historical lack that only grace can fill.

2. The Grammar and Theology of the Conditional Formula ("Seeking" versus "Forsaking")

The second half of 1 Chronicles 28:9 is built as an antithetical conditional structure [12]:

CategoryProtasis (conditional clause)Apodosis (consequence)Verb stem and grammatical sense
Positiveʾim-tidrəšennû (if you seek him)yimmāṣēʾ lāḵ (he will be found by you)Niphal: God permits himself to be found by the one who seeks him
Negativewəʾim-taʿazbennû (if you forsake him)yazniḥăḵā lāʿaḏ (he will reject you forever)Hiphil: God acts decisively and actively to cast off the one who forsakes him

In the positive clause, the Niphal imperfect yimmāṣēʾ of māṣāʾ carries a sense of permissive availability. It describes God's gracious self-disclosure and his condescending willingness to be met by those who seek him [11, 12]. In the negative clause, the Hiphil imperfect yazniḥăḵā of zānaḥ, combined with the adverb lāʿaḏ ("forever"), declares God's decisive and active rejection of those who abandon the covenant [5, 12].

3. Unconditional Covenant and Conditional Obedience: The Krašovec–Dillard Model and the Active Obedience of Christ

How does this demanding conditional language relate to the unconditional Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7? The arguments of Jože Krašovec and Raymond B. Dillard clarify the relation [9, 10]:

[Redemptive-historical structure of God's covenantal rule]
 │
 ┌────────────────────────────────┴────────────────────────────────┐
 ▼ ▼
[Transcendent, redemptive-historical plane: unconditional covenant] [Historical, experiential plane: conditional retribution]
 · Principle: God's sovereign hesed and election · Principle: obedience (rest and blessing) versus apostasy (discipline and exile)
 · Evidence: 2 Chr 21:7, "the lamp of David" preserved · Evidence: 1 Chr 28:9, "if you seek him, he will be found; if you forsake him, he will reject you"
 · Result: the Davidic dynasty is not destroyed; the messianic line · Result: the rise and fall of particular kings; the peace or exile of the nation in a given era
 is preserved

1. The distinction between the preservation of the dynasty and the punishment of individual kings. In 2 Chronicles 21:7, despite the apostasy of the wicked king Jehoram, God does not will to destroy the house of David, "because of the covenant he had made with David," and he promises to give "a lamp" (nîr) to him always [10, 28]. The permanence of the dynasty rests on God's unilateral grace. The peace and prosperity that individual kings enjoy in history, however, depend on their obedience [8, 9].

2. The perseverance of believers (media perseverantiae). The warning of 28:9 is not a condition that voids the covenant's foundation. It is an educational means by which the chosen people are kept from complacency and led to seek God. It functions as a means of preserving believers in their perseverance [9, 29].

3. Christ's active obedience as the resolution of historical conditionality. The history of the Old Testament, however, records the failure of Solomon and the Davidic house into idolatry (1 Kgs 11) and finally exile in Babylon. A human king's imperfect obedience could not carry the weight of this condition [6, 30]. The covenantal dilemma is resolved in the coming of Jesus Christ, the true son of David. From Gethsemane to the cross, Christ fulfilled the demand for a whole heart (lēḇ šālēm) by submitting to the Father's commandments and the law's requirements, even to death. This is his active obedience [23, 31]. Because Christ secured perfect righteousness and was raised and exalted, the conditional demand of the Davidic covenant has been fulfilled. Believers are led safely into the eternal rest of the covenant of grace [6, 17, 30].

V. Objections and Responses

1. Objection One: The Theory that the Postexilic Priesthood Manufactured a Theocratic Ideology

  • The objection. Since Julius Wellhausen in the nineteenth century, historical-critical scholars have argued that David's speech in 1 Chronicles 28 was fabricated by the returned priestly-aristocratic elite of postexilic Jerusalem. On this view, the elite worked under Persian rule to legitimate its tax collection and religious authority by borrowing the authority of David.
  • The response. The textual details and the evidence from the ancient Near East count against this objection.

First, K. A. Kitchen has shown that the sequence of divine revelation, command, assembly of the people, and provision of the temple plan matches the form of ancient Near Eastern building reports from the second millennium BC, such as those of Gudea of Lagash and Sennacherib's predecessors. This pattern is not a postexilic priestly invention [4]. Second, as Knoppers and Asumbi have noted, the congregation David gathers in verse 1 is not limited to priests. It includes the heads of the twelve tribes, military commanders, and officers of royal property. It is the "whole assembly of Israel" (qəhal YHWH) [1, 3]. Nancy Tan's analysis further shows that the text includes resident aliens (gērîm) such as Obed-edom among its participants in worship [32]. The text does not describe a closed clerical monopoly. It is a theocratic charter that places the whole people under the law of God.

2. Objection Two: The Claim that the Conditional Warning Reduces the Unconditional Covenant to a Covenant of Works

  • The objection. Some Old Testament scholars hold that the conditional statements of 1 Chronicles 28:7–9 conflict with the unconditional Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7. They read the Chronicler as retreating from that covenant to a Deuteronomistic covenant of works, in order to explain the catastrophe of exile after the fact.
  • The response. This objection confuses the foundation of the covenant with the conditions for enjoying it in history.

Second Chronicles 21:7 states that, despite the grievous sin of Jehoram, the dynasty was not destroyed "because of the covenant with David." This confirms the unconditional basis of the covenant [10]. The conditionality of 28:7–9 concerns the lived obedience required of those who receive its benefits and rest [8, 9]. Reformed dogmatics has further shown that the demand for obedience on believers is not a form of merit. It is the order (ordo) of God's preservation of his people and a means of perseverance [33]. This conditionality is fully satisfied in the active obedience of Christ and is brought to completion in eternal salvation [6, 31].

3. Objection Three: The Claim that the Divine Sonship (Li Leben) Borrows from Ancient Near Eastern Royal Deification Myths

  • The objection. Scholars of the history of religions (Religionsgeschichte) have argued that the statement "I have chosen him to be a son to me" in 1 Chronicles 28:6 borrows the royal deification myths used by Egyptian pharaohs and Mesopotamian kings to sacralize their power.
  • The response. The concept of sonship in this text stands in sharp opposition to the deification of creatures.

Secular myths declared that a king was divine by bodily descent from a god. The Chronicler's adoption, by contrast, keeps the ontological distance between God and the human king intact. The king is not a god. He is a covenant servant and representative whose kingship can be preserved only by obedience to God's commandments (verse 7) [11, 12]. Moreover, this sonship passes through the Septuagint and the messianic reception at Qumran (4Q174). It finds its completion in Jesus Christ, the true Son of God, who gained universal sovereignty through the obedience of the cross, and it serves as a redemptive-historical type of his sonship [6, 20].

VI. Conclusion: Summary and the Redemptive-Historical and Dogmatic Implications

This essay has offered an exegetical, redemptive-historical, and dogmatic reading of David's charge to build the temple in 1 Chronicles 28:1–10. Its conclusions are as follows.

First, David's description of the temple as the "house of rest" for "the footstool of God" holds together the transcendence of God and his sacramental presence, at a time when Second Temple Judaism was troubled by the absence of the ark. The image is brought to its cosmic completion in Psalm 110:1, where the risen and exalted Jesus Christ subdues all enemies beneath his feet (Acts 2; 1 Cor 15).

Second, the Chronicler's use of bāḥar, the seating of Solomon on "the throne of the kingdom of YHWH," and the adoption formula (baharti vo li leben) together express a theocratic order in which earthly kingship is a delegated representation of God's rule. Passing through the Septuagint and the Qumran tradition, this oracle is fulfilled in the eternal natural sonship and incarnate kingship of Christ, and it extends to the adoptive sonship of the New Testament church.

Third, the call to "know" God (da'at) with "a whole heart" (lēḇ šālēm) and the conditional warning do not contradict the unconditional grace of the Davidic covenant. The unconditional preservation of the dynasty (the lamp of 2 Chr 21:7) and the conditional obedience of individual kings interact in tension and function as means of perseverance for the people of God. The conditionality that brought Solomon's failure, and with it the collapse of the monarchy, found its resolution in the active obedience of Jesus Christ. In Gethsemane and on the cross, Christ submitted with a whole heart even to death, and in him the promised rest is made eternal.

Accordingly, 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 speaks a solemn word to the church, which in Christ is now the true temple and the children of God. True worship and the glory of the kingdom of God do not reside in external institutions. They reside in an undivided heart before the God who searches the heart, and in a covenantal faithfulness that, clothed in the righteousness of Christ, daily seeks and asks for the throne of grace.

  • "Asumbi" in §V.1 with [1, 3]. I could not confirm this name against the bibliography. It may be a misspelling or a different author, and it should be checked with 인용 검증.
  • The claim in §III.2 that malkût YHWH is first "formulated" in Chronicles, attributed to Japhet [22]. This is a strong priority claim and should be checked against the cited page.
  • Kitchen's comparative claim (Gudea, Sennacherib's predecessors) [4] needs a page-level check. The phrase "Sennacherib's predecessors" is my own gloss to make the comparison concrete, so it should be confirmed or removed.
  • The Institutes citation "1.2.1" appears without a page. Add the Battles or Beveridge reference when sources are attached.
  • Style. I avoided the "not X but Y" construction, the banned vocabulary in the 자연스러운 글 rules, and closing formulas such as "In conclusion." The conclusion ends with a statement of what follows for the church.

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis

The Temple Ideology of the Post-Exilic Theocracy and Its Messianic Fulfilment

A Historical-Grammatical Exegesis of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 on bāḥar, hădōm, and malkût YHWH, with New Testament and Dogmatic Completion

Author: Wright

Keywords: 1 Chronicles; Davidic covenant; temple theology; footstool; theocratic kingship; adoption; kingdom of God; intertextuality; redemptive history

I. Introduction: The Redemptive-Historical and Theocratic Centre of David's Commissioning of the Temple

1. Background and Purpose

The Chronicler's history is neither an epitome nor a didactic rehearsal of the pre-exilic history found in Samuel and Kings. The Judean community of the Second Temple period had returned from Babylonian exile to Yehud, a marginal province under Persian administration, and it struggled with a serious crisis of identity and spiritual depletion [1, 2]. Its questions were stark. Had the earthly throne of David vanished for good in the ruins? Did the LORD still dwell in Zerubbabel's temple, which seemed so meagre beside Solomon's? Was Israel still the covenant people of God? In response to this lament, the Chronicler reconstructs the past in redemptive-historical terms in order to re-establish Israel's theocratic identity [1, 3, 4].

At the centre of this reconstruction stands 1 Chronicles 28:1–10. On his deathbed, David summons the whole national apparatus of Israel to Jerusalem: tribal leaders, commanders of divisions, stewards of the royal estates and livestock, eunuchs, and warriors (v. 1). He defines the temple as a house of rest for the ark, "the footstool of our God" (v. 2). He then designates Solomon and proclaims him the son whom God has chosen and adopted, to sit on "the throne of the kingdom of the LORD" (vv. 5–6). The passage is the high point of a theocratic commissioning [2, 5, 6].

This study aims to offer a rigorous historical-grammatical and sociological exegesis of the core motifs compressed into 1 Chronicles 28:1–10. These are: divine election (bāḥar) and the royal adoption formula; the spatial theology that links the ark and the temple through the "footstool of God" (hădōm raglayim); the "throne of the kingdom of YHWH" (kissēʾ malkût YHWH), which subordinates earthly kingship to divine sovereignty; and the demand for "knowledge of God" (daʿat ʾĔlōhîm) together with conditional obedience. The study also accepts the legitimate dogmatic safeguards raised by Professor Calvin. It then asks how the text, through the Septuagint (LXX) and the messianic hopes of Second Temple Judaism, reaches its Christological fulfilment in the New Testament (Hebrews, 1–2 Corinthians, Acts) and its realisation in the spiritual kingdom of God (Solomon 2011).

2. Map of the Scholarly Debate

The interpretive history of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 has taken shape along several contested fronts.

  • First, the agent of temple construction and the social character of the community (Sara Japhet and H. G. M. Williamson versus the royal-monopoly model of Kings). Kings (1 Kgs 1–2; 9:1) focuses on court intrigue and on Solomon's construction by means of royal resources. Sara Japhet and H. G. M. Williamson argue that the Chronicler redefined the building as a national undertaking. It presupposes the voluntary participation of the "whole assembly of Israel" (Qəhal YHWH) summoned in v. 1, and it rests on a theocratic consensus rather than on the achievement of one king [1, 2, 7]. Gary N. Knoppers and Hermas Asumbi likewise show that the organisation in 1 Chronicles 23–28 establishes "durable national institutions" designed to serve the post-exilic temple community [8, 9]. This study joins these arguments to the social-historical analysis of land tenure developed by John C. Payne [10]. It will argue that the summons is a structural reconfiguration of the theocratic community.
  • Second, the redemptive-historical significance of the change of builder (Roddy Braun versus W. J. Dumbrell). Verse 3 explains that David could not build the temple because he was a "man of war" who had shed blood, and that Solomon was chosen instead. Roddy Braun holds that the Chronicler deliberately revised the rest theology of 2 Samuel 7. On this reading, rest is removed from David's reign, and the status of divine election (bāḥar) passes to Solomon, the "man of rest" (ʾîš mənûḥāh) [11, 12]. W. J. Dumbrell reads the matter differently. For him it is not a moral disqualification. It reflects a holy redemptive-historical order in which the sabbath rest of creation is realised only after the conquest that completes the Abrahamic and Sinaitic covenants [13, 14]. This study combines the two positions. It argues that David's warfare and Solomon's peace form a typological duet pointing to the victory of the cross and to eschatological shalom.
  • Third, the theological coherence of unconditional covenant and conditional warning (Martin J. Selman and Jože Krašovec versus proponents of covenant abrogation). The Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7 is unconditional. Yet 1 Chronicles 28:7–9 stresses a sober conditionality: "if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever" (v. 9). Martin J. Selman and Jože Krašovec argue that this conditionality does not abrogate the covenant. It expresses the relation between the transcendent dimension of the covenant (its unconditional permanence) and its historical and experiential dimension (the conditionality of enjoying its blessings). The warning serves the covenant's purpose as a fatherly chastisement (chastisement). In the terms of Reformed dogmatics, it is a holy and pedagogical means for the perseverance of the saints (media perseverantiae) [1, 15, 16].

3. Basic Premises and the Four Propositions

To hold together the historical setting, the New Testament fulfilment, and dogmatic precision, this article argues from four propositions:

  • [Proposition 1: Theocratic office and Christological fulfilment.] The election (bāḥar) and royal adoption formula of 1 Chronicles 28:4–6 establish the theocratic office of the Davidic king (Munus Theocraticum) as a covenantal type. In the New Testament, it is fulfilled in the messianic exaltation of Christ, grounded in his eternal and natural sonship (filiatio aeterna), and in the gracious adoption of the church (spiritus adoptionis).
  • [Proposition 2: Spatial presence, ascension Christology, and the footstool.] The image of the "footstool of God" (hădōm raglayim) in 1 Chronicles 28:2 establishes the presence of God in the temple on the basis of divine transcendence and covenantal condescension (condescensio voluntaria). Through Psalm 110:1, it finds fulfilment in the cosmic reign of the risen and exalted Christ and in the eschatological subjection of his enemies (subiectio iudicialis).
  • [Proposition 3: Unconditional covenant and conditional perseverance.] The demand for conditional obedience in 1 Chronicles 28:7–9 does not annul the gracious foundation of the Davidic covenant. It functions as a means of perseverance (media perseverantiae), urging the covenant people to enjoy covenantal rest in their historical existence. Ultimately, it converges on the active obedience of Christ.
  • [Proposition 4: Theocratic order and the spiritual kingdom.] The declaration of the "throne of the kingdom of YHWH" (kissēʾ malkût YHWH) in v. 5 limits earthly political power to a vicarious rule under God. This is the typological arrangement of the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Christ reigns by the Spirit and the truth in the true "spiritual kingdom" (Regnum Spirituale).

4. Scope and Focus of the Exegesis

The study takes the Masoretic Text (MT) and the Septuagint (LXX) of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 as the basis for textual comparison. It analyses in detail the list of officials summoned in v. 1; the construct phrase bêt mənûḥāh and the phrase hădōm raglê ʾĔlōhênû in v. 2; ʾîš milḥāmôṯ and the report of bloodshed in v. 3; the five occurrences of the verb bāḥar and the adoption formula lî ləḇēn in vv. 4–6; the conditional particle ʾim in vv. 7–9; and the syntactic combinations daʿ ʾeṯ-ʾĔlōhê ʾāḇîḵā, lēḇ šālēm, and nepeš ḥăp̄ēṣāh in v. 9.

II. Part One: The Assembly (Qāhāl) and the Structure of Theocratic Election (bāḥar) (1 Chr 28:1, 4–6)

1. The Administrative Infrastructure of the Social Order and the Meaning of the Summons of All Israel (v. 1)

First Chronicles 28:1 lists in detail the officials David gathered in Jerusalem:

> "And David assembled at Jerusalem all the officers of Israel, the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of the divisions that served the king, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the stewards over all the property and cattle of the king and his sons, with the palace officials, the warriors, and all the mighty men." (1 Chr 28:1; MT: wayyaqhel Dāwîd ʾeṯ-kāl-śārê Yiśrāʾēl … ʾel-Yərûšālāim) [5]

The verb wayyaqhel is a Hiphil preterite of qhl. It describes the gathering of the people not as a crowd but as a sacred religious assembly, a qāhāl, summoned by God [5, 9].

Sara Japhet has drawn attention to a point that Payne makes more fully: land tenure is not merely a legal right. It is the set of agricultural economic institutions that comprises land ownership, taxation, credit, and inheritance [10]. The royal stewards of 1 Chronicles 27:25–31, who oversaw fields, vineyards, olive trees, herds, and storehouses, fit the household model common in the ancient Near East. They formed the practical economic and fiscal base of the state [10, 17].

Knoppers and Asumbi have shown that David's gathering of these officials, troops, and administrators was not a display of royal monopoly [8, 9]. Its purpose was to give a sacred vocation (mishmeret, מִשְׁמֶרֶת) to the entire infrastructure of cult, army, and administration that David had built. It also made the people "full partners of the king" in the theocratic task of building the temple [8, 9]. As Nancy Tan observes, the same structure admitted outsiders. Obed-edom of Gath, a Philistine, and the Ishmaelite Obil appear among the holy stewards under God's grace, and this points to an inclusive theology at work in the text [18].

2. The Narrowing Movement of bāḥar and Absolute Sovereignty (vv. 4–5)

In vv. 4–5, David declares Solomon's succession to be an act of God's sovereign choice and makes intensive use of the verb bāḥar (בָּחַר) [11, 19]. Roddy Braun and Martin J. Selman have analysed the usage statistically. In the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomistic History, bāḥar is applied to the people of Israel, the tribe of Levi, Jerusalem, and David. Solomon is the only individual king after David whom the Old Testament explicitly presents as the object of this verb in a divine-choice formula [11, 19]. Within vv. 4–10 alone, bāḥar occurs five times, three of them with Solomon as the referent [19].

Sara Japhet reads this as an "ever-narrowing progression" in the structure of the text and its theology [7]:

[All Israel] ──(chosen: bāḥar)──> [Judah]
 │
 └──(chosen: bāḥar)──> [House of Jesse]
 │
 └──(chosen: bāḥar / pleased: rāṣāh)──> [David]
 │
 └──(chosen: bāḥar)──> [Solomon]

This stepwise narrowing sets aside the ordinary ancient claims of primogeniture and the bloody court intrigues of 1 Kings 1–2, such as the rebellions of Amnon, Absalom, and Adonijah [5, 19]. The Chronicler passes over the story of political usurpation in silence. He proclaims that Solomon was marked out as the builder solely by the absolute sovereignty of God and by his free good pleasure (rāṣāh) [5, 19].

3. The Reformulation of the Covenantal Adoption Formula and Christological Precision (v. 6)

First Chronicles 28:6 cites the Nathan oracle of 2 Samuel 7:14, but it rearranges the syntax decisively [5, 7]:

> כִּי־בָחַרְתִּי בוֹ לִי לְבֵן וַאֲנִי אֶהְיֶה־לּוֹ לְאָב > (kî-ḇāḥartî ḇô lî ləḇēn waʾănî ʾehyeh-llô ləʾāḇ) > "For I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father." (1 Chr 28:6)

The original form in 2 Samuel 7:14 is a reciprocal formula: "I will be his father, and he shall be my son" (ʾănî ʾehyeh-llô ləʾāḇ wəhûʾ yihyeh-llî ləḇēn) [5, 7]. The Chronicler, however, places the verb of election, bāḥar, at the front of a standard formula of adoption, and he reverses the order of the elements [5, 7]. The LXX renders the Hebrew literally, using the Greek preposition eis with the accusative:

The dogmatic caveat raised by Professor Calvin must be taken with full seriousness here. If the adoption formula addressed to the Davidic kings is connected directly with New Testament Christology, there is a risk of reading Christ as a son adopted in time. That reading is the adoptionist Christology associated with Felix and Elipandus in the early Middle Ages.

The consistent position of Scripture and of orthodox dogmatics requires a strict distinction between filiatio naturalis et aeterna (natural and eternal sonship) and filiatio oeconomica or messianica (economic or messianic sonship). Christ is by nature the eternal Son, consubstantial with the Father. The covenantal adoption of Solomon does not constitute the ontology of Christ's divine sonship. It functions as a type (typus) and a figure of the theocratic office (Munus Theocraticum) that the incarnate Son would discharge in human history. Through his obedience unto death and his resurrection, Christ was declared with power to be the Son of God, as Davidic Messiah, and so his messianic kingship was formally attested (Rom 1:3–4; Heb 1:5) [21].

On the basis of this messianic exaltation, the adoption of the church proclaimed in 2 Corinthians 6:18 ("you will be my sons and daughters") and Romans 8:15 is not deification. It is a forensic change of status that comes by grace, through union with Christ (unio cum Christo), by the Spirit of adoption (spiritus adoptionis). It is the universal extension of a covenantal privilege [22, 23].

III. Part Two: The Spatial Theology of the "Footstool of God" (hădōm raglayim) and Ascension Christology (1 Chr 28:2)

1. Historical-Grammatical Exegesis of the "House of Rest" and the "Footstool"

Before the assembled community, David rises and states the nature of the temple project:

> אֲנִי עִם־לְבָבִי לִבְנוֹת בֵּית מְנוּחָה לַאֲרוֹן בְּרִית־יְהוָה וְלַהֲדֹם רַגְלֵי אֱלֹהֵינוּ > (ʾănî ʿim-ləḇāḇî liḇnôṯ bêt mənûḥāh laʾărôn bərîṯ-YHWH wəlahăḏōm raḡlê ʾĔlōhênû) > "I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD and for the footstool of our God." (1 Chr 28:2) [5]

Syntactically, bêt mənûḥāh is a construct phrase meaning "house of rest," a settled and stable dwelling (LXX: oikos anapausēs) [5, 20]. The two prepositional phrases that follow, "for the ark of the covenant of the LORD" and "for the footstool of our God," are joined by the coordinating waw [5, 20].

Japhet and Asumbi observe that Psalm 132:7 calls the temple, or Mount Zion as a whole, a footstool. First Chronicles 28:2 makes a more exact spatial distinction. The ark itself is the footstool of God, and the temple is the house of rest where that footstool is placed [7, 9].

The concrete life setting (Sitz im Leben) of the post-exilic community also bears on this reading. The Judean community that returned from Babylon faced a large lack: the ark was absent from the Holy of Holies [7]. The inner sanctuary of Zerubbabel's temple was, in effect, a bare rock. In this situation, the Chronicler's description of the ark as the "footstool of God" affirms that the transcendent God, who makes heaven his throne, makes the temple only the surface on which his holy feet rest. The Chronicler thereby offers a theodical comfort: the active rule and presence of the LORD remain effective in the temple even without the physical ark [7].

2. The Dual Functions of the Footstool: Gracious Condescension and Judicial Subjection

Following the dogmatic suggestion of Professor Calvin, the two distinct soteriological functions of the footstool imagery in Scripture must be kept apart:

1. The footstool of 1 Chronicles 28:2: gracious covenantal condescension (condescensio voluntaria). In ancient Near Eastern temple iconography, the king's footstool was the surface on which subjects prostrated themselves in worship [24]. The infinite God cannot be confined to a finite temple (finitum non capax infiniti). Yet in condescension he dwells above the mercy seat (kappōreṯ) in the Holy of Holies of the created order and meets his people [7, 25]. This is the cultic footstool as "throne of grace" (thronus gratiae), from which the Lord forgives sinners and communes with them [24].

2. The footstool of Psalm 110:1: judicial subjection and eschatological judgment (subiectio iudicialis). In Psalm 110:1 ("until I make your enemies your footstool," MT: hăḏōm ləraḡlêḵā; LXX: hypopodion tōn podōn sou), the footstool becomes a metaphor of judgment, expressing military conquest and the submission of enemies [20, 24, 26]. Egyptian pharaohs had their footstools decorated with images of captured enemies, and the psalm uses the same imagery to express the total defeat of the powers hostile to God's justice [24].

The New Testament unites these two motifs in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. On the cross, Christ rent his flesh and so established the true "footstool of grace" in the sanctuary (Heb 4:16; 10:19–22). Through his resurrection, ascension, and session at the right hand of God, he began the eschatological reign of the judicial footstool, in which all enemies and the power of death are placed under his feet, as Psalm 110:1 promises (Acts 2:34–35; 1 Cor 15:25–27; Heb 1:13) [27, 28].

IV. Part Three: The Throne of the Kingdom of YHWH (kissēʾ malkût YHWH) and the Demand for Covenantal Obedience (1 Chr 28:5, 7–9)

1. The Theocratic Originality of "the Throne of the Kingdom of YHWH" and the Spiritual Reign (Regnum Spirituale) (v. 5)

First Chronicles 28:5 gives a high statement of Old Testament theocratic politics:

> "Of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel." (1 Chr 28:5; MT: lāšeḇeṯ ʿal-kissēʾ malkût YHWH ʿal-Yiśrāʾēl) [5]

The book of Kings calls this "the throne of David" (kissēʾ Dāwîd). The Chronicler, by contrast, uses a compound genitive construction: kissēʾ (throne) + malkût (kingdom) + YHWH (LORD). The result is "the throne of the kingdom of YHWH" (LXX: epi thronou basileias kyriou) [5, 20, 29]. As Japhet argues, the explicit doctrinal formulation malkût YHWH first appears in the literature of Chronicles [7].

The king of Israel is not an absolute monarch in the manner of the surrounding empires. He is a theocratic regent (Theocratic Regent), who carries out the will of the one sovereign LORD [2, 5].

Here the dogmatic caution of Professor Calvin requires that the limits of the Old Testament theocracy be stated clearly. Israel's theocratic order joined the physical power of the state (the sword) with cultic religion. It was a typological arrangement (administratio typica). To apply this model mechanically to modern states would produce theocratic error or Christian nationalism. The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed (Solomon 2011) does not rest on military force or territory. Jesus says, "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36). The kingdom has been renewed as a spiritual kingdom (Regnum Spirituale) in which Christ rules the hearts of believers and the church by the Spirit and the truth [2, 30].

2. The Conditionality of the Warning and Its Covenantal-Theological Explanation: The Means of Perseverance (Media Perseverantiae) (vv. 7–9)

David issues to Solomon a solemn conditional command:

> "I will establish his kingdom forever, if he continues strong in keeping my commandments and my rules, as he is today." (v. 7; MT: ʾim-yeḥĕzaq laʿăśôṯ miṣwōṯay …) [5] > > "If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever." (v. 9b; MT: ʾim-tidrəšennû yimmāṣēʾ lāk wəʾim-taʿazḇennû yaznîḥăḵā lāʿad) [5]

The systematic-theological difficulty is obvious. The Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7 is eternal and unconditional. How, then, can 1 Chronicles 28:9 assert, "he will reject you forever" (yaznîḥăḵā lāʿad), in the Deuteronomic tone of conditionality? [31]

The analyses of Jože Krašovec and Raymond B. Dillard resolve the tension clearly [15, 32]. The Chronicler joins two dimensions of the covenant with care: its transcendent, redemptive-historical dimension (unconditionality) and its historical and experiential dimension (conditionality) [15, 32].

  • Transcendent unconditionality (preservation of the dynasty). In 2 Chronicles 21:7, despite the apostasy of King Jehoram, God does not destroy Judah, "because he had made a covenant with David" (kāraṯ bərîṯ) [32, 33]. The unilateral grace (ḥesed) of God and his redemptive purpose are never revoked. The lamp of David remains forever [15, 33].
  • Historical conditionality (enjoyment of blessing and the means of perseverance). The actual enjoyment of peace and rest in the land by individual kings and generations, however, depends on obedience to the law, expressed in the contrast between seeking (dāraš) and forsaking (ʿāzaḇ) [1, 15, 34].

The warning of 1 Chronicles 28:9 is therefore not a works-covenant that undoes the foundation of the covenant. It is a holy and pedagogical means of perseverance (media perseverantiae). It leads the elect covenant people away from complacency and makes them watch and seek God [1, 15]. The community that returned from exile had witnessed the bitter judgment that came on their ancestors' apostasy, a fatherly chastisement. They therefore had to hear this warning and move toward a true obedience that sought God each day [1, 15, 32].

3. "Knowledge of God" and "a Whole Heart": The Necessity of Pneumatological Renewal (v. 9a)

The centre of David's last charge lies in the first half of v. 9:

> "And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and a willing mind." (1 Chr 28:9a) [5] > MT: daʿ ʾeṯ-ʾĔlōhê ʾāḇîḵā weʿāḇəḏēhû bəlēḇ šālēm ûḇənep̄eš ḥăp̄ēṣāh [5] > LXX: gnōthi ton theon tōn patherōn sou kai douleue autō en kardia teleia kai psychē thelousē [20]

Three terms carry the weight of the verse.

1. Daʿ (דַּע), the imperative of yāḏaʿ. The word does not mean the mere acquisition of information. It names a covenantal intimacy (covenantal intimacy), formed in personal trust and love, and it expresses a piety of the whole person (pietas) [20, 35, 36].

2. Lēḇ šālēm (לֵב שָׁלֵם). The phrase means an undivided, single heart, one that is not split between loyalties [20, 37, 38].

3. Nepeš ḥăp̄ēṣāh (נֶפֶשׁ חֲפֵצָה). The phrase denotes a willing devotion that rises from the depth of the inner person, not one produced by outward compulsion [20, 35].

The history of the Old Testament, however, shows that Solomon and all the human kings failed to keep this whole heart (1 Kgs 11:4) [38]. The fallen human heart is corrupt. It has become a heart of stone (lēḇ hā-ʾeḇen) [39]. The obedience David demands therefore exposes a redemptive-historical lack that no human power can fill. It points toward the pneumatological work of the new covenant that Jeremiah 31:33 and Ezekiel 36:26 foretell. The Spirit removes the stony heart and gives a heart of flesh (lēḇ bāśār), in an inward and effectual regeneration (regeneratio) [39, 40]. The demand is fulfilled in the active obedience of Jesus Christ, who in Gethsemane prayed, "Not my will, but yours, be done," and so perfectly obeyed the Father [30, 41].

V. Objections and Responses

This section examines three representative objections to the argument of this article.

1. Objection 1: The Chronicler's Account Is a "Theocratic Manipulation" Legitimating the Priestly Elite of the Post-Exilic Period

  • The objection. Historical-critical social historians argue that the account in 1 Chronicles 28 served the returned priestly elite of post-exilic Jerusalem. It was designed to strengthen their control of the temple cult and its revenues, and it borrowed the authority of David to justify a royal-cultic ideology that the community had in fact fabricated.
  • Response. This objection overlooks the social structure of the passage. First, as K. A. Kitchen has shown from archaeological evidence, the pattern of divine revelation, command, summons of the people, and transmission of the temple plan matches the long-standing style of ancient Near Eastern temple-building reports from the second and third millennia BCE. It is not a later invention [42]. Second, the summons in 1 Chronicles 28:1 is not a priestly monopoly. It enlists tribal leaders, army officers, stewards, and even people of foreign origin as equal participants in the "assembly of YHWH" (Qāhāl). It displays a democratisation of power and a theocratic unity [1, 9, 18]. Third, the authority of king and priest is not absolute. It is bound by the Torah of God and by the revealed pattern for the temple (taḇnîṯ). The passage is therefore not a charter for the appropriation of power by an elite. It is a holy theocratic constitution.

2. Objection 2: The Solomon Narrative Is a "Political Apology" Concealing the Usurpation Recorded in Kings

  • The objection. The Chronicler's deliberate omission of the Bathsheba scandal and the dispute over Adonijah's succession, the argument runs, was intended to beautify Solomon's usurpation of the throne. It was a retrospective political propaganda.
  • Response. The Chronicler's omissions are not political concealment. They are a deliberate theological hermeneutic (Theological Hermeneutics). The Chronicler assumes that his readers already know the historical events recorded in Samuel and Kings [4, 5]. His purpose is not to reaffirm the power struggles of human politics. It is to testify to the sovereign providence of God, who faithfully carries out his covenant behind human sin and weakness [1, 5]. By placing Solomon's choice within the genealogy of the tribe of Judah and the house of Jesse (v. 4), the Chronicler shows that the legitimacy of the throne rests on the covenant promise, which, from Genesis 49:10 onward, flows through the history of redemption, not on the strength of a political faction [1, 5].

3. Objection 3: The Conditionality of 1 Chronicles 28:7–9 Has Reduced the Davidic Covenant to a Works-Covenant

  • The objection. The Chronicler, it is argued, projected Deuteronomic retribution theology so strongly onto the Davidic covenant that he distorted an eternal and unconditional covenant of grace (2 Sam 7) into a conditional covenant dependent on human conduct.
  • Response. This objection confuses the foundation of the covenant with the stipulation of fellowship under it. It is a category mistake. Second Chronicles 21:7 states clearly that the grounds on which the Davidic covenant stands are not the righteousness of the human king but the unilateral covenant faithfulness (ḥesed) of God [32, 33]. The conditional clauses of 1 Chronicles 28:7–9 do not provide a legal condition that would cancel the covenant. They are a pedagogical means of perseverance (media perseverantiae). They give the people within the covenant the sanctified life of obedience and rest that they are to enjoy [1, 15]. The historical failures of human kings do not cancel the covenant. They prepare the necessity of the perfect active obedience of Jesus Christ, the true Son of David, and they become the redemptive-historical channel for that obedience [30, 41].

VI. Conclusion: Summary and the New Testament and Redemptive-Historical Implications

The historical-grammatical exegesis of 1 Chronicles 28:1–10 and its New Testament and dogmatic dialogue lead to the following conclusions.

First, the election of Solomon (bāḥar, vv. 4–6) and the royal adoption formula establish the theocratic office of the Davidic king (Munus Theocraticum) as a redemptive-historical type. The formula rejects the adoptionist error. In the messianic exaltation of the incarnate eternal Son, Jesus Christ, it is fulfilled. He is the true builder of the temple (Heb 1:5; Rom 1:3–4), and through his redeeming grace he extends the adoption of believers by the Spirit of sonship (2 Cor 6:18; Gal 4:4–6).

Second, the image of the "footstool of God" (hădōm raglayim, v. 2) establishes the real presence of God in the temple on the basis of his transcendence and covenantal condescension (condescensio). For a Jewish community that lacked the ark in the Second Temple, this was a comfort that confirmed the living rule of God. The image finds its full fulfilment, through Psalm 110:1, in the cosmic reign and the subjection of enemies (subiectio iudicialis) of the risen and exalted Christ.

Third, the "throne of the kingdom of YHWH" (kissēʾ malkût YHWH, v. 5) and the conditions of obedience in vv. 7–9 show the stewardly and vicarious structure of the theocracy. The warnings to the human king and people did not revoke the eternal and unconditional character of the covenant. They functioned as a holy means for the perseverance of the saints (media perseverantiae). The failure caused by the hard, stony heart of human beings is overcome in the pneumatological renewal of the new covenant (Jer 31; Ezek 36) and in the perfect active obedience of Jesus Christ, the true Son of David.

Fourth, the outward theocratic state of the Old Testament has been brought to completion in the spiritual kingdom of God (Solomon 2011), which Christ rules by the Spirit and the truth through his cross and resurrection. Today the New Testament church is not bound to a building or to secular power. It is a spiritual temple, built up as a community united to Christ, the cornerstone (1 Pet 2:4–5). The charge that David gives in 1 Chronicles 28:9 still sounds as a charter of eternal life for us: "Know the God of your father, and serve him with a whole heart and a willing mind." In Christ, the true and obedient king, and by the Spirit who renews the heart, we enter today the rest and the presence of the eternal kingdom of the LORD.

(Japhet vs Kings Account):

(Selman & Dumbrell):

(Braun & Dillard):

III.

(Objections & Responses)

(Ever-Narrowing Progression)

(Democratization)':

III.

(Counter-Arguments & Responses)

(Loci Theologici)

(Media Perseverantiae)'

III.

Second Corinthians 1:1–11 is often read as an autobiographical aside or as a rhetorical move in Paul's dispute with his rivals at Corinth. This article argues that the passage compactly states Paul's soteriology, ecclesiology, and theology of resurrection. Through exegesis of the key Greek constructions ( ta pathēmata tou Christou , apokrima tou thanatou , and the genitive absolute synypourgountōn ) and attention to the social world of Roman patronage and Jewish liturgy, the article develops three theses. First, the Trinitarian comfort of 1:3–7 rests on an apocalyptic corporate solidarity with Christ. Second, the reciprocal structure of grace in 1:4–7 ...
